The Prosperity Special
No one who saw the "Prosperity Special
20 huge locomotives, which the Baldwin Locomotive works is delivering to the Southern Pacific, will deny that the train convinced him of the fact that the country is entering upon a new era of progress. The fact that the Southern Pacific had enough confidence in the stability of the country to order 50 locomotives of the type seen here, and that 20 of them are on their way west, illustrates the general spirit of enterprise which i3 gripping the country as a whole. The engines themselves were worth while
looking at, but bigger still was the example of the faith of the Southern Pacific railroad in investing heavily in motive power to replace old
engines . and to supply .new ones for increased
freight traffic.
Other railroads which have been holding up
orders because they doubted the beginning of prosperity will be encouraged by the progress of the 20 locomotives through the east to their western destination. Many of them, it may be noted, have placed orders for equipment or are preparing to make repairs to their roadbeds in order that they may be prepared for the heavy traffic that is bound to come. Some students of railway affairs say that the lines will be unable to transport the output of the factories of the United States after they are pro
ducing at capacity. They believe that the roads
have not increased their equipment sufficiently
to be able to meet the demand. This is a ques
tion about which the layman can pass no judgment. The action of the Southern Pacific in increasing its equipment has made an impression on the business interests of the country. The slogan which the engines bear, "Prosperity Special," is no misnomer. The train will not bring dollars and cents to' the cities through which it passes, but will demonstrate that one large company has faith in the future of the country, and by going into the market for equipment has given work
to hundreds of mechanics. Let this message bs accepted by thousands of companies and individuals to create a demand for goods, and all the factories will soon be operating at full capacity.

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams. Author of "You Can." "Take It," "Up" WHERE THE SOUL GROWS I was showri through a beautiful home last evening. , It was a veritable dream of beauty, refinement, thoughtfulness of arrangement, yet withal of simple elegance. Aa the master of the house led me through the many rooms and pointed out the paintings which he had collected over the years, I commented that he must be a great lover of the out-of-doors, especially of cows, whose pictures were so liberally displayed In his home. "Why shouldn't I lova cows?" my friend remarked, "I was born and reared on the farm." I could get this man's viewpoint. I, too, had had my years upon the farm and learned Its fascination and beauties. My mind ran back to the long days across the fields behind the plow, and I could smell the fragrance of the soil and feel -the touch of the hot sun, hear the distant birds and the -call of the cow and horse. How well I recall resting at the end of the furrow under the shade of some tree, and amid the stillness, drinking in the refreshment of the farm and all itB life-giving elements. Even now my thoughts often run back to those days, as I walk down the crowded street of the groat city, contrasting this life of sham and pretenso and unnatural greed for power and money. For what affinity has this skyscraper working place, towering in the heart of hum and rush, for those quiet, restful fields, canopied by the. sun and stars? Who that has ever known It, can forget that snvell of green hay, the sound of the horses In their stalls, the sight of resting cows at their cuds, or the scratching hens in their coops? N No wonder the world gathers nearer to the heart o Burns as time accumulates. He knew his meadow mousel If there is a place on earth where the soul grows and waxes strong, it Is out amongst all those beauties that make the farm a shrine. Where the air is filled with melodies, where the fairy lore and folk songs are born, from whose green pastures come the foods of the world. The singing brook, the crackling branches through the lane, the tired body at night-time, the stars peeping into the little room with the straw bed God's voice sounded so clear there.

A lady in a college town wa3 trying to interest her young negro gardener in higher education. He listened to her flights of fancy in open-mouthed wonderment. The next day he delighted her by asking for the loan of a dictionary. "Why, certainly, Nero," she said; "but what do you want it for?" "Well, missus, I see my best gal out with a foller last night, and I'se gwine tuh write her a letter, and I'so gwine to use some big words."
Five villains, with gyves upon their wrists, sat in durance vile. "It is strange," said we. "that you five stalwart scoundrels, after robbing the brink and maltreating all persons who sought to ftay you, should have allowed yourselves to be knocked iown and hog-tied by a lone cripple pquipppd with naught but a crabtree cudsrel."
"Alas, sir." replied the most lowbrowed of the lot. "Our lack of forththo'iarht was our undoing. We expected to encounter only the usual heavily armed posse, which could not run and capture a lost gosling. Instead, we met this lame lad with a club, who meant business and had no de?ire to show off. Of course, we did not know how to comport ourselves, not know how to comport ourselves."
CHARLES S. THOMAS The recent appointment by Attorney General Daugherty of Charles S. Thomas, Democrat, former senator
I from Colorado, as one of the group of
adies who will di
rect the prosecution of the war fraud cases adds another chapter to his busy political career. H e has long been one of the d o m i n a t ing figures in the western political field. Charles Spauld ing Thomas was born at Darien, Ga, Dec. 6, 1849. His parents removed to Michigan in his
Scavv n?G.7uo9s early boyhood, and
it was here that he secured his education, graduating from the University of Michigan in 1871. In the same year he went to Denver, where he practiced law until 1879. He then hung up his shingle in Leadville for six years, returning in 1885 to Denver, where he has since been a prominent member of the bar. Senator Thomas has long been identified with Colorado politics. He was a member from Colorado of the Democratic national committee, 1884-96; governor of Colorado, 1899-1901; temporary chairman of the Democratic national convention at Kansas City in 3900; elected United States senator, Jan. 14, 1913, for unexpired term (1913-15) of Charles J. Hughes, deceased; re-electechfor term, 1915-21.
