Tne Text "Thou art not far from the Kingdom of God." Mark 12th chaoter, 34th verse.

A person may be very near the kingdom of God and lose. Of all cases of spiritual ruin, none are so distressing as that of man or woman who under similar circumstances have been brought as near as you now are and ye: refuse the last step. A sad sight is that of the ship tb.it goes down -when the passengers are within sight of their native shores, and the towers and spires of the seaport town make a bright silhouette against the blue sky-line for a background. Whatever became of this young lawyer to whom Jesus uttered these words? I do not know. I presume l c never did profit by them or the Uible would not have left us to guess for the last 1900 years. I presume 'le never did enter the kingdom of

is you are now. If you make a will, that will is not

in force as long as there is a living breath in your lungs. But the minute you pass from the realms of the living, that will is In force. Some people are nearer the kingdom of God than others. Until you accept

Jesus Christ and are born again by faith in Him, you are out of the Kingdom. The moment you accept Him and are born again you are in the Kingdom. Difference la Of Kind. The difference is not one of degree, but of wind. There are no degrees of salvation. You find yourself In the middle of circumstances that have contributed to bringing you nearer to where you find yourself now. The elements of character may develop Into circumFtances. These circumstances are appealing to the best elements of your character and by making that appeal they have brought you nearer to realizing that you ought to be a Christian. Your condition of mind may be due

to elements of character. You are' rnmn!UH tn aHmit that vou are In a'

Is sad to see things that would be the religion of Jesus Christ which is perfect but for the lack of one thing, a mere matter of faith would stand Most of us here tonight came from 'a small show with the legal profesChristian homes. You have the mem-j sion, and yet the legal profession, ory of a godly father or mother. You thank God, has furnished some of the have been surrounded by Christian i brightest lights that ever blazed In influences. On our coins we stamp .the firmament of Jesus Christ.

"In God We Trust."

Under the influence of It, you have turned as naturally toward this tabernacle as a flower will turn toward the sun, when it left its lips to be kissed by the sunshine and the dew. And then, companions. Many are in Heaven because of the influence of companions. Others are in Hell because they have gone with the wrong crowd. Many Have Good Associates. Many a man has a good, godly wife, or he had a godly mother, and I believe the prayers of many a man's wife are a lightning rod above his head to keep God from knock

ing him down in his cussedness and sin. So therefore, for the sake of! companions, you can thank the Lord. I Avas preaching out in Illinois, in the midst of a fabulously rich valley. There was a man there who owned over 3,600 acres of this land. He sneered and wouldn't go to church, although his wife plead with him to go. She said, "I am ashamed that you won't go with me. I have helped you to get all that you have got, yet you pay more attention to others than to me." He said, "I'd go to the meeting, but I've got to milk the cows." That was his job. She said. "We'll pitch in and help you to milk the cows." And they did It. He drove with her to town, and when he got there he said: "I'd be willing to go to the meeting with you, all right, but my clothes aren't good enough." "They're good enough for you to wear to lodge," ehe said, "and they are good enough for you to go around to the neighbors on Sundays." "Well, he said, "They are not good enough to wear to church."

Why Primal Pair Was Expelled. You say it was a mighty small thing for him to drive Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden because they ate the forbidden fruit It was not for that that he drove them out. Go to the doctor and he says you have got to lose your fingers and if the doctor should say not only your fingers but rour hand and if the doctor should " say not only your hand but your arm, you would nearly faint Some Underestimate Value of Soul. You would beg and plead so long over the thought of losing a finger or a hand. If you tell a sinner that he is going to lose his soul, he will debate the question. I guess you don't realize the value of it. Some boys were playing in the streets of a town in Africa and they picked up a stone about as big as a hickory nut. A gentleman came along and he said: "I will give you ?10 for it."

our soul there is not enough on earth to Induce us to part with it Finney attached more to the Spirit than he did to the letter of the law.

Jesus stood talking to the Pharisees and over here stood this young lawyer. He perceived that Jesus Christ had them hanging over the ropes, so this young lawyer butted in and he said: "Master, where is the great commander? Which is he?" And the Lord answered: "There is but one God." Then the young lawyer said: "You

are right, there is but one God and there is none other but He; and to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding and with all the soul and with all the strength and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices!" Young Jew Shows Concern. How it must have stirred and refreshed the heart of Jesus Christ to find a young Jew, a lawyer, a scribe and such a high ideal of what Jesus was trying to reach the people with as a ladder among the Jews, one with such a clear idea of the truth. I would to God we had more of such men as this young Jew for he would put to shame the silly, emptyhearted frivolous chaps of today. If Jesus Christ were on earth today, and if He would deign I don't

nothing for the others.

A fellow may steal and then not swear, but whosoever keeps the whole law with but one exception is an offender. If I am bound by a chain of one hundred links and one link breaks, I am gone. If I break one

commandment, I am a sinner, away

from God. I trample His law under my feet. You have heard many sermons, my friends, and you can't plead your ignorance. God has designed that through preaching men should know that there is a way to be saved, and that through faith In Jesus Christ. It is said Aaron Burr when twelve years old made application at Princeton University to be admitted as a Sophomore. The rules forbade that any one under fourteen should be accepted. When he was thirteen years and six months old, he passed the examination. They suspended the rules and admitted Aaron Burr. When he was sixteen years of age

he graduated the valedictorian of his class, and in the years to follow there

has only been one person to equal his mark.

On April 1, 1921, Soloman Dabinski, IS years of age, reached this country from his home in Poland on the steamship Polonia. He could not read or write or speak English, but he was willing to learn. A few days ago Dabinski was informed that he was the winner of the bronze medal awarded by the National Society of the Colonial Daughters of Washington for the best patriotic essay in English. He now speaks the English language fluently, as well as German, which he has also been studying.

DEVIL TRIES

(Continued from Preceding Page) itation, that is all. We see it everywhere. In clothes, in conveyances, the style of our houses and in everything in this old world. And so the Devil appealed to the strongest principle to Humanity; that principle of imitation. God knows this so he sent Jesus Into the world to show us how to live. I want to live as he. tells us to live. And he has told us in the Bible how to do it and what our reward will be. Therefore when your whole being is filled with good you will have no time to practice evil. First is the power of resistance. Ulysses wras a wise traveler. The sirens used to yell their songs on the

party gave their thanks to the chorus for its present, after choir rehearsal, following the sermon. All three thanked the chorus and its members for the good spirit that they had shown during rehearsals, and for the good music that they had produced. Powerful Descriptions. Mr. Sunday's sermon had but little humor in it But it had a number of thrilling descriptions that held the audience. Mr. Sunday described his own assent of Mt. Hood, up 14,000 feet, with the last 5,000 feet mostly up a snowy cliff at anyt angle of 75 degrees. He told of the climbing with guides in the Alps, and he told of the dramatic day when the little party of Spanish men resolved on the sands at Panama to go on to Peru. But the closing description was the most dramatic of all, when he described the conversation of death with a man that did not want to die. He told of the icy fingers at his neck, and acted the part of the man, who finally had his meeting that could not be set aside. Quite a number of persons who had hit the trail at previous times, and

had signed cards, came forward a sec-

No honest man or woman is left

in the dark. Some skeptics are argumentative. They are religious pugilists. Their hands are against every man. Stop fighting against man. Stop fighting against God you are a fool! This young lawyer was willing to live up to the light that he had. There was nothing frivolous about him. He was not a "smart Alec." To show how smart he was, he desired to know the will of God and such a fellow is never left in the dark, believe me. "Thou are not far from the Kingdom of God." All his qualities brouglit his soul nearer but they did not take him in. Don't imagine you

a look into Heaven. You have got to take the last step. Points Out Difference. I think his morality asd his gentility were in his favor, just as Jesus said, that the publican and the harlot would precede the moral man into heaven. What he meant was that it isn't so hard to convince a publican or a harlot that he or she needs Jesus Christ. It is hard, though, to convince a moral, virtuous, respectable and refined man that he needs to be born again. So Jesus said, "All the publicans and the harlots will go into Heaven before you." Why? Because they

Resistance. That is the power of resistance. The other power is that of counterattraction. Orpheus was a sweet singer. So sweet was his singing that the lions and the animals would crouch to the ground when they heard him. So when he rounded the isle the sirens clamored around him but the best music they could make was only a discored compared to the sweet charming music of Orpheus. So he laughed them to seorrt-in their attempt. They rounded the promontory by counterattraction. There was something better in Orpheus than in the sirens. Oh! you get the song of salvation in

your soul, then you will despise the temptations of the Devil. You get the conception of your soul, and then the cheap side-shows of the Devil will have no attraction for you. Fill your manhood and womanhood with goodness. Take Jesus Christ into your life and you can laugh at the best the Devil can do. That is the way Jesus did with Martin Luther.

Whoever will repent will go in and the last one to feel that they need Jesus Christ is the refined, courteous man or woman, and they think that the preacher that tells them they need Jesus Christ is a fool. Don't condemn him. Don't condemn me. You can't prove that what I preach is not the Bible. I tell you another thing. It Is detestable if not blasphemous. If that man had been a bum, a rum-hound and vile you can bet your sweet life that Jesus Christ would never have said, "Thou are not far from the Kingdom

kof God." No sir.

I have heard that emphasized in church and I have heard it emphasized in missions where so many have been converted. Another Comparison. God will save a drunkard quicker than he will a sober man? That is a lie. That is not true? But you

may be able to convince the drunkards that they need Jesus Christ to Bit in judgment on the decrees of other fellow.. "The publican and the harlot will go into the Kingdom of Heaven before you do." Your morality i3 to be admired. It is the best thing outside of religion, but it is not religion and it is not enough. You must confess Jesus Christ and publicly take your stand. What you might regard as moral, the Lord wouldn't. And it is God's standard that finally has to be met. You may say to me "Isn't that a email thing to keep me out of heav-

in a town before where the bankers did not come right out in their stand for Jisus Christ," Sunday said urging them to corns forward before the audience stood. "Come forward now, so that I can see you as you come," Sunday pleaded. As the trail hitters began to filter down the aisles, the nurses in a bodystarted to move forward. The audience, catching their movement, applauded heartily. Urge Bankers to Come As the current of trail hitters came slowly down the aisles, waiting for Mr. Sunday to take his place in the pit where he shakes hands, the evangelist turned towards the ushers who were grouped at the front to guide the stream of men and women. "Some of you business men go down and have that bunch of bankers come down," Sunday asked.

When the cards were counted, 133

men and women had come forward

and signed cards pledging their faith

in Jesus Christ as a personal savior. Rev. F. A. Qressel of the First English Lutheran church offered the opening prayer, while Rev. R. W. Leazer, pastor of the First Baptist church, gave the closing prayer. A heavy rain fell during most of the sermon making it difficult for Mr. Sunday to be heard at all times. Prays for Success. "Have you noticed," Mr. Sunday said," that in the six weeks this is the first time that it has rained on the roof while I have been preaching. I pray just as much that that part of the meeting will go well as I do for

any other part.

BANKERS INTRODUCED . When the bankers stood up to be introduced, Mr. Rodeheaver said that he liked to see the bankers and the ministers get together as they each had something that the other one needed. THE BUNDY PICTURE The picture "Autum Woodland" painted by Mr. Bundy, was painted irom nature several days ago near his studio in the country. It was touched

up and finally finished this year, just before it was selected by Mrs. Asher for her gift Only Mrs. Asher did not know she was doing it. The committee of women to buy the gift had

several of the ones they thought best 1

taken to the Starr Fiano offices, where Mrs. Asher saw them, and said what she liked the best.

RECEIVES OVATION Mr. Bundy received a real ovation when he stood up on the platform Friday night, after his picture had been presented to Mrs. Asher. READY FOR SUNDAY Another warning not to worry about getting in to hear Mr. Sunday next Sunday was given by Mr. Sunday himself, and Mr. Rodeheaver. "If necessary," said Mr. Rodeehaver, "we will

have the crowd for the second sermon j

gather on one side of the tabernacle, and as soon as one bunch has heard the sermon, they will go out one side of the building while the new audience will come in the other side.

INTERRUPTS PRAYER Mr. Sunday had just started his nrayer Friday night, and had gotten as far as "Say Jesus," when he thought of the bottle of water under the pulpit. Hauling it out he took a deep quaff, splashed some water over his face, and contnued his prayer, "Say Jesus," be said.

THE FORUM

Editor Palladium: By Sunday night "Billy" Sunday will have preached 77 sermons since he came to Richmond. Counting 3,000 as the average audience he will have had 231,000 hearers in the campaign. The average preacher in Wayne county preaches to about 10,000 people a year. "Billy's" sermons are about twice as long as the average sermon, which means that he has reached as many hearers with as much preaching as 46 average preachers. At $1,000 per

year he would receive J46.000 for his

campaign, if Richmond easily forgets (hat Billy Sunday, was here. The business men's organization that had been meeting at noons at the Y. M. C. A., and later began to hold a second meeting at the tabernacle af

ter the evening sermon, was the first to take active steps. The Business Women's Invitation committee, which during the campaign had charge of the work with the shop girls and the professional women, has effected a complete organization, un der the leadership of Mrs. Wilson D. Scott, and has already announced its first noon luncheon for girls at the Grace M. E. church on next Wednesday. Ready to Proceed "We are beginning in a small way, and hope to work into something larger as we go on," Mrs. Scott said. "1 shall do my best to keep the thing going for this first year, for the girls seem to be most interested in doing everything that they can." The committee is now known as the

Business women's conservation com

mittee. The girls themselves have also organized, the council girls, that had been acting as the key girls, in counecting the different shops and stores with the invitation committee, having formed the Virginia Asher council.

Officers in this organization have already been selecied although a place of meeting has not been decided upon.

Bible Study Classes The prayer meetings, which were under the direction of Dr. A. H. Backus, and Miss Florence Kinney, have been formed into Bible study classes, meeting at least once a week. These groups are organized very much in the same manner as the neighborhood prayer meetings were held. Dr. Backus, assisted by Rev. H. S. James, is in charge of the new undertaking. Noon shop meetings have been decided upon for a large number of shops, but the organization which will carry on this work has not yet been deciced, neither the Billy Sunday club now being formed, or the religious education committee of the Y. M. C A., having had a chance to come to

i a cecision.

Boys Organize Not to be outdone by the men, the boys that had been associated with Albert Peterson at the tabernacle, in selling hymn books, and helping Pete do hi.s chores about the plate, organized a "Pete" club, and are hoping to "carry on" as effectively as any of the groups. The last organization to group them

selves together was the chorus, who took definite action in that direction on Friday night. j Boys and girls, and teachers that were reached by Miss Kinney and Mr. Rodeheaver are the only groups that have not suggested a permanent organi7aticn. The boys are. already grouped into the M. U. F. club (Move Up Forward), while the teachers, with ihe women that attended Miss Kinney's daily Bible classes are enrolling into the Neighborhood Bible study groups. Only the girls are left without some group action. Pick Committee Adopting the report of the committee on organization, the Christian business men at their evening meeting in Section six of the tabernacle voted Wednesday night to appoint the same men as a committee on constitution and by-laws, to report at a meeting of the club to be held at the Y. M. C. A., an evening next week. This is the organization that in other towns has taken the name ot the Billy Sunday club, and which in Charleston formed the neuclus of the delegation that, visited Richmond to hear Billy Sunday preach. The committee is as follows: Will Ferguson, chairman, Roland Nusbaum, Clarence Kramer, Dr. G. C. Wilcoxen, Ed. Treffinger, George Hamilton and William Higgenbottom.

SUNDAY PAYS TRIBUTE TO BROWN, CHAPMAN IN VISIT TO LIBERTY

(Special to The Palladium.) LIBERTY. Ind., May 27. Billy Sunday here today paid tribute to his biographer, and to the man, who more than any other, got him started on his evangelistic career.when following his sermon at the Coliseum, he visited the. former home of Elijah P. Brown, and viewed the church where Dr. Wilbur Chapman preached to his first charge. Over 900 persons heard Mr. Sunday preach on the twenty-third psalm at the Coliseum during the morning. "Two outstanding men in the religious world have lived in Liberty," Mr. Sunday told the audience. Ram's Horn Brown, and Dr. Chapman. You are to be congratulated on having had them here at cne time. wards in his preaching and writing." Driven to Farm Immediately after the sermon, Mr. Sunday was driven to the old Browu farm, two miles south of Liberty, now occupied by Dell is Meyers. An engagement in Richmond permitted him to stay but a minute, but Mr. Meyers explained that the house on the farm

j was just as it had been fixed up by i Mr. Brown.

The same engagement did not give Mr. Sunday more th3n time to have a passing glance at the white church, now occupied Jy the Christian congregation, in which Dr. Chapman delivered his first charge to Presbyterians. Dr. E. R. Beard presided at the meeting, while Dr. W. H. Reynolds, pastor of the Presbyterian church, offered prayer. A collection was taken to be used at Winona Lake. Mrs. Sunday, unon beine introduced

to the audience. Invited them all to

come up to vmona Lake this summer, and told of the changes that had been made in the village to beautify it Mr. Sunday was driven to Liberty by W. S. Traylor, restauranteer, of Richmond. Invented "Boiler Plata." . Elijah P. Brown, who was Sundav's

, official biographer, came to Liberty in

theearly SO's after he had made a fortune in Cincinnati from the invention of "boiler plate," for newspapers, as the prepared matter is now called. He was converted in a meeting held

by Mr. Moody in Chicago, and joined a Presbyterian church in Liberty. Later he was ordained as a Methodi-t. minister, and at Indianapolis published his famous 'paper, the "Rain's Horn. He is now retired and lives at Sebring, Florida. "I have just this week had a letter from him," Mr. Sunday said, "in which he hoped that we would be able to visit his place." Dr. Chapman, who was born in Richmond, held his first pastorate in Liberty. Billy Sunday was touring the country with Dr. Chapman, when he broke into evangelism, and began to preach. He has often said that he owed all his present success to thctraining that Dr. Chapman gave him.

ISLAND SUBMERGED IN OCEAN 6 TIMES: LIMESTONE TABLE

From the New York Evening Post. A description of Walpole Island, one of the oddest islands in the world and one of the loneliest, spots in the Pacific, which has been submerged by the ocean at least six times from all indications, was given at Sydney, Australia, reecntly, by A. C. Mackay, F. R. G. S. representative of a guano company cn the island. Walpole island is a limestone table rising 230 feet above the ocean, accessible at only one spot, a break in the cliffs where steps have been cut. Mackay said there were clear indications on the cliffs of successive water levels, and that pumice, coral and other shells on this curiously raised platform showed that at least six times it must have been at or under sea level. Many traces of ancient human habitation were found walls obviously built by man, columns cf coral eight and nine feet high, large tombs, and clam shell-bladed instruments, many specimens of which Mackay has presented to the Australian museum. Fresh water was discovered in two caves. Mackay thinks that formerly there was a much greater land surface than at present. ' I found plain signs of prehistoric habitation,' said he. "I also found in places, where the guano cements to the coral, the remains of the horned

turtle, which, I am informed, have been found nowhere else except in South America and Lord Howe island." Tho present population of the island consists of six white men, 30 Japanese and about 100 Loyalty IsinnHorc Thn sintrins- of these islan-

rous than it would be otherwise, Mackay said. Poultry and goats are raised for food, while vegetables and fruits grow luxuriantly. Cricket and fishing are the main diversions of the residents. On Sundays the Loyalty Islanders hold two church services, which the whole population attends.

been of such character that the newspapers have published them so that thousands who could not hear him at all or only occasionally have read them daily. Then there is the splendid and efficient work of the "Billy" Sunday party everyone of them an expert in his field. It is not probable at all that "Billy" Sunday will be overpaid. The danger lies the other way. Respectfully, F. C. McCORMICK.
