. Sa'ly Brabant, a society butterfly, nas been given a years' leave of ab,e"ff by her husband, Richmond Brabant, who hopes that sne wxll learn something of life. She v hrmng: flirtation with , r'1" Gilbert, who has always been labeled "Dangerous," and is horrified to learn that, despite his position in society, he is a bootlegger. One of his men shoots a revenue officer, and Gilbert Is held for murder. He escapes, taking Sally with him, but she Is rescued by N'eal Calhoun, who gives her some mod advice. She finds herself without funds and, now knowing where her husband is, assumes the name of "Mrs. fembertori," "ana secures a position as chaperone to Glaire Finch, who has more money than manners. They go to summer resort, where Claire falls In love with Kex Mallory, the son of a wealthy automobile manufacturer, who prefers pally. Sally goes to dinner at a road--louse with Claire and Mallory and In tne dressing rooms finds a girl picking her pockets. The girl is the sister of the employee of Keith Gilbert who was arrested for shooting a revenue officer and has resorted to desperate means to get money for a new trial for him. Sally promise sto help her. Sally goes to Isew York to consult Calhoun in the girl's behalf. She has luncheon with an old friend, Patricia Lorlng, a modern flapper who has recently elODed. and who is
summoned home by a strange telephone call. Patricia's husband had been hurt in an accident; seeing them together, Sally realies the depth of the girl's devotion, and the change that love has made la her. Sally returns to the hotel to find that during her absence Claire has been flirting with Jsed Ralston, a young man of doubtful character whose acquaintance she made without an introduction. With Mallory Sally goes to the roadhouse to see the little dancer once more and promise her aid. Mallorv is fascinated by the girl. During Sally's absence, Claire disappears with Ned and Ralston, and Sally and Rex follow them to the Blue Kitten Inn. Sally receives word tliat Patricia Loring's husband is dying, and hurries to New York. CHAPTER LXXI A FUTILE ERRAND Sally sat very still, her hands clenched. Dick in difficulties and he hadn't told her! He had known that he was going bankrupt at the very time when he urged her to take a vacation. He had said that he would provide for her financially and hadn't done It she could not under
stand that; Dick was a man of his word, always! She felt sick at' heart as a hideous possibility presented itself. Was it possible that he had wanted to get rid of her, and had chosen that way of doing it? A year
ine Kiuroph ago she would have believed in him without question; now, with her experience with Keith Gilbert fresh in her mind, she hesitated. Keith had deceived her perhaps Dick had deceivd her, too. The women at the table on the ether side of the partition were chattering on. "I saw Madame Brabant in Switzer
land just before I sailed for home," one of them remarked. "And she certainly didn't look as if her son had smashed up the family fortunes. She said that she expected him to join her before long that they were "to be in Paris this autumn." Sally rose hastily and hurried out to the door. Dick going abroad he might have sailed. Suddenly, the only thing in the world that seemed of any

The events of the months since she had seen him seemed but a blurred picture of her now. She recalled the news the girl had given her over the telephone that he had taken his pretty secretary west with him, and that they had gone off into the woods together and shrugged her shoulders impatiently, as if to shake off an insignificant, irritating burden. Nothing that he had done could matter now, if he needed her. Out in the crowded street, she paused a moment, uncertainly. She had been so eager to reach him that she had not stopped to consider how it was to be done. Then she hurried to a drug store, and called his office. There was a maddening delay after she got her number. The girl at the other end was not sure whether Mr. Brabant was in or not; ,she would see. Sally fidgeted impatiently it would have been quicker to go down to Dick's office," she told herself. "But will he be out long? When can I reach him?" ' "I really don't know " There was a hint of laughter in her voice. "He's sailing for Europe in half an hour."
Half an hour! And she was at the other end of town almost ! Sally felt as if the ground had slipped from beneath her feet. She didn't even know what line he was going on, or where he was bound for, and to telephone his office again would be to waste precious moments. She stumbled out of the store and stood for an instant, looking up and down the street, in bewilderment. A smart little fruit shop caught her eye. Its windows were filled with steamer baskets of fruit, candies and nuts, and on a small blackboard at one side were the names of steamers sailing in the near future. Sally hurried across the sidewalk. Caronia, the 27th; Aquitania, the 15th today! There were no other ships listed for the 15th and Dick 'would be likely to take the Aquitania, she thought. She hailed a passing taxi and told the driver where she wanted to go, begging him to hurry. If she could only reach the dock in time if the steamer
would just be delayed in sailing if anything on earth would happen that would enable her to see Dick before he sailed. As her driver skillfully steered his way through the traffic Sally's thoughts flew to the last time she and Dick had been together on an oceaa liner. She had stood on the deck, with her arms full of pale pink, spicy carnations a huge, double armful of them, perfuming the air all about her. Her cabin had been filled with little reminders of his thoughtfulness for her comfort, and he had seen to it that her deck chair was in the best possible place, that in the dining saloon she sat where she liked best to sit. Tears filled Sally's eyes at the little remembrances. Dick had never seemed dearer to her than he did at that moment, nor farther away. Tomorrow Beginning Anew.
Beauty Chats By Edna Kent Forbes
A NEW WAY TO BREATHE There are fashions on breathing just as there are fashions in hats, fashions in beauty and fashions in diet. At one time the proper way to breathe was to get all the air into the upper part of the lungs. This was in the dreadful days when wasp waists were in style and every lady tried to imitate Mrs. Noah in figure. The figure was so tightly compressed that there literally wasn't room for a breath of air to get deep enough into the lungs to reach the diaphragm or any part of the ribs. The wasp waist went out when the athletic woman cams in. nri hv tl-oit
of reaction she not only filled all the
lower part or tne lungs with air but she quite refused to breathe into her chest at all. She may have been quite right, for the lower lungs, having been compressed for many years inside corsets, must certainly have neded a litoxygen. However, her type became large waisted aud hollow chested,' an improvement, but still not the ideal. There's a new fashion coming in which is to breathe to the back. This is somewhat difficult because you have to think about all those back ribs and then try and force the air into them. Bat the ideal way of breathing, it seems to me, is the way that forces, air itto every part of the lungs. To do this you must try to draw the breath deep down as far as posible until you can quite literally feel the lower part of . the lungs expand. Then contract thfc stomach and abdomen, thus forcing the air into the chest. This method
