FANATICISM CAUSING PEOPLE TO DESERT RELIGION, IS CLAIM (By Associated Press) BOSTON. May 23. Multitudes of people are practically renouncing religion because of "superstitions of the world's childhood" that have been brought Into the life of today, Rev. Dr. Mlnot Simons, heai of the depart ment of church extension of the American Unitarian association said in an address at the ninety-seventh annual meeting today. "The modern man is appalled to see on every hand the most fantlstic notions associated with religion, swaying the minds and hearts of men," said Dr. Simons. "We see superstitions of the world's childhood brought into the life of today, superstitions long discredited by the world's science and yet actually tyrannizing over the souls of lving men as though the natural sciences had never been born. It is amazing to see multitude practically renouncing religion because of them. Truth l Way. "Truth and nothing but the truth, can point the way back from this abyss. We must not be spiritually flabby at a time like this. The world Is in a state of moral and spiritual confusion. It is appalling to think what may happen next. The world netds nothing more at the present time than it needs the stablizating influence of a rational religious faith." Reporting 10.000 new Unitarians gained as "signed-up church members" by the parishes of North America in the church membership campaign which ended last Easter Sunday. Dr. Simmons characterized the last year as a great year in the building of liberal churches. Rev. Dr. Samuel A. Eliot, son of Drt Charles W. Eliot, president emeritus of Harvard university, was reelected president ot the American Unitarian association.
TIME FOR SUMMER V SPRAY ANNOUNCED Application of the summer spray within two weeks, instead of three weeks after petal fall, is advised by the horticultural expert of Purdue university in a letter just received by the Wayne county agent. This change is made on account of the wet spring which has been unusually favorable to development of fungus diseases. Even in spite of thorough applications of both first and second sprays by the commercial orchardists, scab is unusually severe in their orchards, says the letter, and a bad infestation is predicted for Wayne county orchards also. In addition to scab, black rot fungus is prevalent this year also, this disease causing small dead spots cylindrical in shape, to appear on the leaf. The spray advised for the next application is a mixture made up of three pounds of lime sulphur, with one and a halt of lead arsenate. Addition of two pounds of hydrated lime" to every 50 gallons of spray used in the summer is advised also, to prevent summer spray damage. No spray should be applied during hot temperatures, when the thermometer is over 90 degrees in the shade. Masonic Calendar Wednesday. May 24 Webb Lodge, No. 24, F. and A. M. MURRETTE The William Fox special photo-production "Over the Hill," which is heralded as one of the most fascinating film dramas ever released, which is being shown at the Murrette theatre. The success of "Over the Hill" during a year's run in New York prior to its release to the country & large, reveals a significant psychological angle of the showmanship of its producer, William Fox. For Mr. Fox, with the unerring instinct of a good showman, in the case of this picture reached back into the dim and misty past and i brought forth a story that is exceedingly tfmely in its message, and appeals to every known type and grade of theatre-goer. There is so much laughter, wholesome sentiment and genuine amusement value in "Over the Hill" that It stands out as embodying all that ia finest and most attractive in theatrical entertainment. The film story was made from Will Carleton's "Farm Ballads" by Paul H. Sloane, and was directed with superb skill by Harry Millarde. The part of Ma Benton, the principal character, is played by Mary Carr, who has made of it a masterpiece of dramatic art. WASHINGTON William Christy Cubanne has achieved one of his greatest screen successes in "At the Stage Door," released by R-C Pictures and screened yesterday at the Washington theatre. As the title intimates. "At the Stage. Door" depicts a vivid picture of theaire me. lue story nas to ao wiin me experiences of a young and beautiful) girl who loses her sweetheart to her younger sister and then goes to New York and gets a job in the chorus. About this theme Director Cabannc has built a most enerossine storv. ap proaching it from an entirely new an-j gle.
