and the Symphony Orchestra last night, as well as the exceptionally fine concert by the high
school orchestras and musical organizations
earlier, show how highly developed is the musical
genius of the community.
, It is not vain flattery or a parochial pride to say that in music and art this city enjoys a position which is far ahead of other cities its size and
many cities that far exceed it in population.
A few. misinformed, critics of the community sometimes say that these municipal attainments are imaginary rather than real, and that we take
for granted a condition which cannot be proved

and the outstanding position which the high school orchestra has attained in musical circles in the United States is conclusive proof that its
superiority rests on merit and not on boastful
assertions.

of these various organizations are willing to give ! of their time for training, and because others! are willing to support the ventures by buying
tickets for the performances.
A more generous participation in the purchas
ing of tickets earlier in the season would be a
most commendable thing, for it would remove all doubt about the financial outcome of the season.
All of is should try to improve in this par
ticular. The prestige of the organizations is established. Of this there is no doubt. The per
manence of any organization of this kind however, depends upon the support and participation of the public. In this connection the work of the Art association, which1 has closed 25 years of history, deserves our attention also. Public spirited men
and women have kent alive this organization tor
many years, and have created an artistic atmosphere about our city which has been fitly
called the "Richmond movement" by an author
who recently wrote a book dn Indiana art.
The creation of an art center in Richmond where musical productions and displays jof art
can be conducted on a large scale, which is now
under consideration, shows how far the move ment has progressed in our own midst.
The art association began its work in a very
humble way, but by persistently keeping in mind its general plan it has become a factor that gives the city a recommendation in many quarters. For the broader program that has been outlined the community has the warmest sympathy and it hopes that its realization is measurably near.

THE HURDLER
Once upon a time and this Is a true story there was a boy who had some sort of hip trouble from the time when he was a very small boy. As the years went on and be saw the other chaps wax strong and become runners, Jumpers, baseball players in school, he too longed to excel. But the doctor said NO! The boy, however, figured that he had stood this silent, though open prlsonry long enough. So he determined to disregard the doctor's orders or, rather, so to build his body that he also could be among those who earned honors on the athletic field. He began modestly. The days brought encouragement with signs' of improvement in his condition. Soon 'he became a hurdler. And soon he was taking off all the honors of his school and later of his college. And the day came when he was put to the supreme test of his athletic career. All these years in which he had been perfecting his ability as a runner and hurdler, he had paid little attention to the crowds and the rounds of applause as they had come to him in fact, he confessed that he had never heard his own applause, so intent had he always been on winning hi3 race. But before this greatest of all his races, he determined that he would make the opportunity for listening to the applause that would be his. The race was oir. Hurdle after hurdle had been leaped. He was far in the lead. Only one more hurdle stood between him and victory. Here was his chance. So he turned his head to get one glance at the wild throng and to hear just for one brief second or two the applause that he had never before heard. But as he turned his head back, he caught his toe and fell and lost the race. MORAL: So work as though no grandstand or applause existed at all!

he, and early in the morn he's yelling wild songs of land and sea. It's then that I would sleep and slumber, with folding of the hands; and Jinx, his voice like sawing lumber, beneath my window stands. I try to love James Towhead Baker, whose house is one door west, but he's a sad and tiresome faker, who has one ancient jest; it is a bald and hectic story that Noah shooed away; and that old yarn, so stale and hoary, James tells me twice a day. I try to love old Thomas Title, but I loathe politics, and hate discussing topics vital with chew-and-argue hicks. And Thomas never tries to twitter of any other theme; so loving thoughts grow sadly bitter, and sympathy's a dream. I thought one time
