EXHIBIT OF SCHOOL WORK AT CAMBRIDGE ATTRACTS COMMENT
(Special to the Palladium) CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind, May 19. A hat, dresses and other garments made by the domestic science girls of the schools, and library tahles, porch swings, and other furniture made by the boys of the manual training class, which were displayed In an exhibit of school products this week, have attracted much favorable attention and greatly stimulated public Interest In the work done by the schools. Three library tables were the most ambitious product attempted by the manual training class, but porch swings, stands, upholstered stools and chairs were to be seen also as well as book racks, lamp stands, hat racks and other slfhpler pieces. Two pieces which received especial comment were a library table made by RobertBeeson. of Dublin, of walnut lumber sal vaged from an old house, and a floor lamp made by Harold Horn, manual training instructor. In the domestic science exhibit, ex amples of sewing and cooking were displayed by the older girls. The-11 domestic science students of the coun try schools carried on a friendly riv alry with the 35 city" students, in dis playing their cakes, pies and other products. Puddines. candies, and cooked fruits were shown also In the cookery exhibits. Most Popular Display. The displays of garments probably were the most popular of the exhibit, 788 different garments being on display, with all dresses and other gar ments made after different patterns or varied materials to suit the maker. Complete wardrobes, including night gowns, petticoat, middy or sport suit, combination, gingham dress, blouse, and a set of collar and cuffs were made by the freshman girls. The project method of instruction had been followed, allowng each pupil to work out her own ideas and to make garments suited to her own use, thus finishing the year with products which could be turned to immediate use. Whil3 the girls are not held to any fixed task, they were given thorough instruction In the principles of color, material, construction and form of the garment upon which they work, after which each one was allowed to ppply the principles to the manufacture of her own garments. A hat, the creation of Miss Luella Fulton, who did all the work on It, from actually making the frame, to covering and trimming it, attracted much favorable comment. Hat making had not been Included in the regular course of Instruction, but this product had been finished under the system of allowng each pupil to work on something of use to herself. Get Highest Grades Highest grades for domestic science work in the freshman class were made by Mablo Howard and among the sophomores by Dorothy Ballard. Eva Harris led in grades among the Pershing school students. Unusually good exhibits were made in sewing displays, by Eunice Chapman and Alice Cornthwaite of the freshmen and Mary Beard and Martha Kelsey of the sophomores. Anna Catherine Whelan of the eighth grade, also had on display a dress not only made, but designed by herself. The display 6howed domestic science products in sewing and cooking by the seventh, eighth and higher grades, under the supervision of Miss Ruth McCormick. Lower grades completed easier work under Miss Marie Bolenbaugh, with Miss McCormick'a f aid. Paper folding exhibits were made bv the first and second grades, art work by the third, coloring of tree, flower and bird books by the fourth, basketry by the fifth and designing by the sixth. Relief maps made by the boys of the fifth grade were shown also. They included a map of the world by George Dale, two attractive colored maps of North and South America by Royal Shipman, and one, done in putty on wood, by Harold Rowe. MURRAY ' "The Man From Downing Street," an Earle Williams picture, la being shown at the Murray theatre. The star has been surrounded by a cast very appropriately selected for the sequences which are Involved. Much of the story Includes the fashionable English Military and the high caste princes of England's great possession In the East. Known as the best dressed man In motion pictures when it cornea to social attire, Williams will depart In a measure from what his admirers usually have been accustomed to seeing him in. There will be the magnificent garb of the East India Rajah, which is worn on the more formal functions; the Held uniforms and the smart trappings of the British army. The cast includes Katheryn Adams, Betty Ross Clarke, Bori3 Karloff and Charles Hill Mailes. RICHMOND Appealing, dramatic and at times highly pathetic Is the theme of William DeMille's new Paramount picture production of "After the Show," which is being shown at the Richmond theatre. The story, written by Rita Weiman, deals with the stage, and Jack Holt, Lila Lee and Charles Ogle are the featured players. The scenario was written by Hazel MacDonald and Vianna Knowlton. Eileen, a chorus girl, is the protegee or Fop, an aged stage door keeper who guards her jealously from the intrigues in which stage girls and wealthy bounders largely figure, to the disadvantage of the former. When Eileen meets Larry Taylor, who wins her love Pop is suspicious of the truth of Larry's sentiments towards his ward. When he finds her slipping out of his life. Pop resorts to a daring expedient which has a dramatic finale. But, happily, after a period of dark doubt, true love has its Innings and all are rendered happy. ' MURRAY VAUDEVILLE Waldron and Winslow head the Murray vaudeville bill this last half of the week, presenting dancing and light comedy entertainment. They work amid the glories of a richly designed drop, and find joy offering feats of terpslchorean ability. ' None of us have seen much vaudeville without seeing some "rube" acts. Yet the rube comedians, Roach and McCurdy, get a little closer to the goal of their impersonation, and have a little better brand of original humor than one often sees. Their "act sets a new standard for the rubes of vaudeville. The audience was well impressed with Murphy and Klein, the musicians of the present bill. Miss Murphy has a surprisingly well cultured voice, which is especially noticeable In her first song. Klein maintains his place by presiding at the piano and saxophone. "Marvelous strength is exhibited by the principal in the act by Foley and Spartan. It can safely 'be said that no act of strength,, involving skill, If Kidneys Ache or Bladder s Weak Take Roots and Herbs to Flush Kidneys and Wash Out Irritating Acids.
