HOME MISSION FUNDS GIVEN TO SOUTHERN : CHURCH BEATS MARK CHARLESTON, W.VaMay J9. Records of 56 years were broken in the contributions of the last year to Soirthi ern Presbyterian Home Missions. Re. ceipts, which amounted to $543,431 were the largest in the history of the executive committee of home missions. according to the report of the commit. tee to the Southern Presbyterian Gen1 eral Assembly here. Th amount ex ceeded that received the year previous Dy $76,594. Special attention was called to the fact that Oklahoma, said to. be the weakest synod In the assembly, and largely dependent upon home mission funds for carrying on Its . home" -mis bion work, with 56 congregations which have received church erection aid, leads the church in candidates for the ministry In proportion to member ship and ministers at work. During the year tne committee aided 38 ordained negro ministers. It maintains a theological seminary for negro . ministers at Tuscaloosa, Ala., a college , for Indians at Durant, Qkla., and a hospital and orphanage in connection ' with Highland school at Querrant, Ky, , and 4? schools elsewhere. It supports in whole or part, besides the negro ministers mentioned above, 905 home missionaries. Including 271 unsalaried wives of missionaries. NEW CORMARIETY FOILS CHINCH BUGS Chinch bugs may be foiled on at least , one farm in Wayne county this summer, as ' a new variety of corn, guaranteed to break the oldest chinch bog's" teeth, has been imported especially for their entertainment ' " The county agent is just In receipt of sufficient Democrat corn ' to plant an'acre of "ground". The corn, "grown in southern Illinois, attained especial fame last" summer when" it passed practically unharmed through chinch infestation that ruined field after field planted with other "varieties. The peculiar quality that makes the corn repugnant to the bugs Is not definitely known, but may be either the greater hardness of "the stalk; which makes it difficult to penetrate, or a different flavor of the juice: "It is not absolutely inedible to the bugs, but they will pass it by so long as any: thing else offers'. " The corn, sent by Purdue, will be planted on a farm in Wayne county and its performance watched during the nexlj season. '" Surveys' indicate that near the mouth of the river Rio de la Plata the Atlantic is more than eight miles deep. " ' Have You Piles? Travelers'. "Notes" By Post C Scrlhar; Do any of the' boys know- where Tom Tarkelson has gone? We have hunted, the towjnoYer fox. him, hut he cannot be found any where. He certainly cannot be in the, city, else he would come to the cluB'rooms. , If any of the- T. P. A. members see him, kind ly communicate with the secretary, when a special committee will be nam ed to look after him. ' .,' While there were few , delegates from Post C at the state convention, one may judge from the "yarns" that are being told that there must have been , some "high old times . among some of the boys. We understand that President Beck did not arrive at his hotel . until some time - in : the early morning on Saturday. Lebo had retired and in fact, thought it was time to get out of bed for the day, when suddenly the lights were turned on. and there stood Charlie Beck in the middle of the room, fully dressed. Lebo asked him If he was all ready to go out for the day, as he (Lebo) thought it was morning, when Charlie says: "Shucks, I have just come in." Asked as to where he had been, he did not have very much to say, but when he was in bed, there was not any more sleep for Lebo. Elmer says he has heard freight trains, threshing machines, corn shredders and "cut outs" of every description, but no such noises were ever heard by him ae came from the little bed where Charlie Beck was so peacefully sleeping. Brother LeRoy Browne, who has been sojourning at The Home Lawn Hotel, Martinsville, returned to us on Monday evening,- much improved in health, and is again at his office answering "calls." Walter H. Bates, who has been spending the past week in Chicago and nearby towns, in the interests of the International Harvester" company, returned home Tuesday night. Ed. Thacher is the member of Post C who walked to Indianapolis, to attend the state convention, not because Ed. did not have the "price," but Just to show his friends how, he used to "hike" during the years of the Civil war. He left Richmond on Friday night and arrived in the "Convention The season's most popular Slipper, $4.00, $5.00, $6.00 NEFF & NUSBAUM POWDER

' We have noticed- recently' that a few of our "press chairmen" ' have been fgiyen to criticising the action of some of the officers, of other T. P. "A. posts in the state, and some of the writings have waxed real warm." r- While Post C press chairman has not had very much experience in writing up T. P. A. notes, he will state that he is cuff iclently advanced in years to know that quarrelings ' and bickerings never did any organization any good, and my advice to these pugnacious individuals is that they "bury the hatchet," and write good reports of one another. j For expressing myself as above, perhaps I may find myself like the chap did when he attempted to 6top the fight between the Iroshman and his wife, and some day I will wake up and find myself a fit subject for the hospital.
