(Markets by E. P. Leland & Company, 212 Union National Bank Building) CHICAGO, May 19. Wheat Displayed strength early and May' longs lent support and shorts covered. Towards the close May turned weak and led to general decline in all deliveries. The failure of cash wheat to improve after the slump of yesterday and the liquidation in May, together with the favorable Kansas state . report and good weather Insofar as wheat is concerned with lower Liverpool markets were the weak factors. All rallies seemed to find wheat for sale and there was little or no support on the way down. At the low May wheat showed a decline of 5Hc from the high
today, with only a slight recovery at the close. Corn It was a narrow market in corn, with prices following wheat more or less. Crop conditions are not as favorable as for wheat The continued rain, while benefitting the growing wheat, is delaying the planting of corn. There was no expert news and cash market about unchanged. Oats Houses with eastern conection sold early and filled up resting commission house orders and shorts. There was more selling later because of the weakness in wheat. Shipping sales. 30,000. Kansas oats acreage shows a decrease of 400,000 acres from last year, with a condition of 82 per cent, according to the state report. Cash about unchanged. RANGE OF FUTURES (Markets by E. F. Ships of Dry Navy Blocking Sea Lanes (By Associated Press) WASHINGTON, May 19. Ships of the prohibition navy are successfully blockading the sea lanes to the Atlantic coast against rum smugglers, Commissioner Haynes said today. Location of federal liquor patrols are being kept quiet by Mr. Haynes, but he indicated that the prohibition vessels were well distributed along the eastern coast line. Rum running has decreased since the organization of the fleet he declared, particularly along the Florida coast, while one of the prohibition ships recently stopped and searched 24 suspicious looking craft m one day without discovering any liquor. John Henry Mears, of New York, set the record for round-the-world speed by making the trip in less than thirty-six days.
