up in New England -why don't you and she come up there and visit us?" "But why, your mother doesn't know us; she wouldn't want to invite two utter strangers into her home!" protested Sally. 'She'd love it if they were friends of mine," he insisted. "I'll wire her and she'll telegraph an invitation back and she's a dear. You needn't be afraid that she wron't mean it! You see, you've got to get away from here before this elopement is pulled off!" Sally considered the plan for a mo-

note. It would.be absolutely neces-i
sary to see the girl herself, there, and to do so with Claire in attendance would be impossible. She spent all her time with Claire, despite her charge's attempts to get rid of her. It became a hateful, loathsome game, Sally ever watchful, Claire constantly alert to every chance to elude her chaperone. Sally would not admit to herself that she feared to leave the girl alone with Ralston, yet that was the case. She knew too lit
tle of the world to be a judge of character, but his shifty, close-set eyes, narrow face and weak mouth made clear even to her what sort of man he was. As if her own suspicions were not enough. Mallory took it upon himself to warn her, one evening when she was sitting on one of the verandas overlooking the sea, resting for a moment from her never-ending chaperon

"I believe she s very fond of him," j the first woman took up the talk. "I I think that might be a successful marriage Heaven knows we need a few i such these days." '

They chatted, and drifted away, un

"This is my third visit," he announced. "The car's outside. Please come for a drive before dinner." She should send him away, she knew that. But she wanted to go.
She compromised. "I can't leave the office before 5:30, really," as Paul started to protest. "I know, no one will come in. But I'm supposed to be here until then and I'd feel more comfortable if I stayed. Run along and find someone else to drive with."
"I won't. I'll wait until 5:30. He looked half annoyed, half amus

ing. She was going out for a drive with Paul she was going to see him and talk with him for an hour or so again! But there was that MacKeen girl who might 'get" him. The bits of gossip came back to her, hurting her. Paul walked restlessly around the room, examining the posters off the walls, looking at the pamphlets and political buttons on the tables. "Queer places, women's clubs," he growled. "What do they do that's useful? What gocd are they?" "They're useful to me at least," Patty said and laughed.
"I know," Paul walked over to her
desk. "Mrs. Munn told me about what's-his-name losing his money. It's a shame you have to work." "I like it," Patty said.

VANISHING CREAMS What are the virtues of vanishing creams? Many people ask me, and 1 have to answer that it depends upon the cream. A poor quality vanishing cream has no virtue at all, a good one is useful in some ways. Ordinary cold cream, which Is 6im ply cleansing or flesh- building cream which contains nourishing oils, Is quite all right for daily use. But even the best of vanishing creams. In my opinion, should only be used now and then. I believe that they clog the pores, hold into the texture of the skin whatever soil or powder may be upon the surface, and generally interfere with the skin's ordinary functions. But occasionally, if the skin Is rough or chapped or very dry, a little good quality vanishing cream (applied only after a thorough washing with soap and hot water) will be beneficial-
It will make the skin seem soft and smooth for the moment, therefore
serves a good purpose. But as a habit, I would never advise It. However, vanishes cream is splendid for the elbows. Here the texture of the skin is coarse at least in comparison to that of the face usually too, it is dry and rough. Vanishing cream, applied after the elbows have been sciubbed with soap and hot water, will make the skin smooth and soft and
ready for thick coating of powder.
This treatment Is best if done just
before you put on a sleeveless or short
sleeved gown. The unfortunate part
is, that the elbows will pick up an
extraordinary amount of dust while the
cream is on them.
