CHAPTER LIV A NEW EXPERIENCE Sally felt decidedly guilty when Bhe returned to the beach at last, nd Claire's, obvious displeasure did not make her feel less so. The girl was effusively pleasant to Rex Mallory, but treated Sally with a cool disdain that 'was all too apparent, and was also the one thing needful to make him Sally's champion.

Mallory turned to Sally with a look that spoke volumes, but 6he met it with a smile that disarmed suspicion, and he shook his head dubiously. Dear Mrs. Thompson: Pleas tell me where a book case Is supposed to be. I have It In the den. and people say it belongs in the living room. UNDECIDED.. It seems to me a den would be a very good place for a bookcase. In many homes where there are a lot of books. Instead of calling the reading room a den. It Is called a library. Usually a living room is so full, of life that It Is more pleasant to have the books In a more quiet place so
that the person reading ; will not be disturbed by the conversation ' of
others. : . -

When Claire went upstairs to dress for her ride, Sally sat down at a desk in a secluded corner, intending to make a pretense of writing at least, and it was there that " Rex Mallory sought her out a few moments later.
