Sally Brabant, a society butterfly, lias been given a year's leave of absence by her husband. Richard Brabant, who hopes that she will learn something of life. She has a thrilling flirtation with Keith Gilbert, who has always been labeled "Dangerous," and Is horrified to learn that, despite his position in society he Is a bootleeeer. He attempts to kidnap her when he escapes arrest for the murder of a revenue officer, committed by one of his men. S?lly Is rescued by Neal Calhoun, who advises that she KO to work. She finds herself without funds, and her husband's absence and the Impossibility of reaching him force her to accept this suggestion. She gets a position under an assumed name as chaperone to a 17-year-old girl. Claire Finch, who has more money than fnnnners.

automobile manufacturer, whom Claire Immediately tries to attract. Mallory obviously prefers Sally,
which makes Claire jealous. CHAPTER I 1 1 1 CLAIRE MEETS HER MASTER "Oh, are you going in?" Claire's tone was significant; cur-
prise and displeasure colored it. "Yes, of course I love to Bwim," Sally replied sweetly. As she valked down the beach to the bath house behind Claire and Rex Mallory she had reached a decision. She must handle the girl in a new way, or she would be imposed upon unbearably. And she
realized that Claire would have more respect for her if she held the upjer hand. "Oh." Claire said
nothing more, but
when Sally emerged from the bath
house a little later,
the girl's eyes fairly bulged.

She had tied a peacock-colored silk handkerchief over her bathing cap, and a Btray curl or two escaped from beneath it end blew across her cheek. Claire, in a much befrilled Buit of black taffety, was decidedly at a disadvantage. Obviously, she had felt that much . money must be spent on even a bathing suit, simply because she had a great deal. She was too un
accustomed to her wealth to dare to spend little. Her manner toward Sally, as they went down the beach to join the others, was decidedly cool, and the admiration that was in Rex Mallory's fcyes when he caught sight of Sally's charming little figure was the matol that kindled the conflagration of her wrath. The gay little crowd ran splashing Into the surf; Claire valiantly attempted to keep up with the others, but the receding water dragged at her ankles, and she paused just where the waves
caught her as they broke, hitting her
with their full force.
"Come on out further come out wher they don't hit you bo hard!" urged Mallory. Claire took one or two steps, but the waves looked so huge and green as they came sweeping in that she drew back, afraid. v MOh, come on!" He strode. back and caught her by one hand, drawing
her after him out to where the waves
rolled in unbroken. "Now, give me
your other hand that's it. Now,
here's a good one jump!
She obeyed, but Jumped too soon, and the wave swept her over on hifi.

"Just let it lift you just stand on your toes and then jump the least bit," he urged. "Now that's it!" That attempt was more successful.
Claire loved this new sport. But most J of her enjoyment was due to the fact!
that it was Rex Mallory who was shar
ing it with her. She had quite forgotten Sally. As for Sally, she had been playing about further out, diving through the waves, swimming a little in the moments between the big ones. Accus
tomed to the ocean eince her childhood, Ehe loved it. Mallory soon tired of Claire, however; she clung to him so tightly, was such a weight to hold when she lost her balance and was thrown against him by the force of the water. Several times Bhe miscalculated the waves and jumped too coon, her hands on his shoulders, holding him down. He wanted to go out further, to swim around by himself. Instead of wasting
his time with this fat girl who was in
clined to be coy.
He had been spoiled, perhaps; too many girls had frantically pursued
him. He realized that his money had
much to do with it. And he was In-
clincvl to be more interested in the at
tracUve Sally than in this flirtatious
charge of hers.
"Want to try It alone now for a bit?" he asked Claire. But she wailed
"Oh no!" and clung to his hands
harder than ever. He eyed her cal
culatingly. There was always more
than one way to rid oneself of an un
welcome companion. He took the
first one that came into his head.
The seventh wave was coming a
long, green wall of water, with curl
ing top rising higher and higher as It approached them. Claire took hold of his shoulders, and he placed one hand at either side of her waist, as it rose above them. She Jumped; he planted his feet firmly and stood still. And then, when the wave had but half passed, he let her down in the middle of it and loosened his hold. "He helped her to her feet a moment later. Gasping, struggling wildly, mouth, nose and eyes full of salt water, she clawed at the air and made strange sounds. Rex grinned. "Don't mind it'll do you good," he
told her. "Now, come on Quick
here's the biggest one yet."
Claire felt sure that she swallowed
at least half of that wave; possibly all
oi it. sne looked up at mm wun streaming eyes when it had swept past them and mumbled something that he
interpreted with suspicious ease.
"You want to go back to snorer
Sure, 111 help you." And he towed her
back to the beach, dropped her on the sand, and went hastily out to the wide stretch of water where Sally was
floating.

Heart Problems
Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a girl sixteen years of age. My mother is opposed to my friendship with several boy friends. I am not allowed the
privilege of going with young men to parties or shows. I have been meeting
them up town.
I was walking up the street with
my friend the other day when I met
mother. Now I am not allowed to leave
the house unless I am accompanied
by one of my parents. As I saved
enough money to get to another town, would It be correct for me to leave
home and go to work?.
ALL. BY MYSELF You are really oo young to make a practice of going with boys. It seems
to me, however, that your mother la' carrying her discipline too far when Bhe refuses to let you have any boy friends and when she insists that an older person accompany you every time you go out of the house. It would be all right for you to entertain a boy occasionally In your home and also to attend school and neighbor
hood parties.
I would not advise you- to leave
home, however, because If you did you
would be forced to return 6ince you
you are not of age yet. Besides a lit
tle girl of sixteen could not earn
enough to live comfortably and happily. Even yon cannot make your mother see your point of view, stay
at home until you are of age, at which time your mother will surely change her views and permit you to have
young men friends. Do not try to deceive her because you will only cheat yourself.
