REPORTS FARM WORK IN HIGHER AND DRIER PARTS GOING AHEAD

(Tt? Associated Press) INDIANAPOLIS, May 3. Farm work, during the last few days of April -was speeded up by the farmers, whose work was retarded during the early part of the month, because of the heavy rains and flooded conditions of their lowlands, George C. Bryant, United States agricultural crop statistician said in a report today: Work in the higher and well-drained fields is going forth at a rapid pace, and the farmers are ready as soon as the soil permits, to ploy and plant in the wet ground, the report says. For the first time in nearly six weeks farmers in all parts of the state were able to work in their fields. Rainfall Is much in excess of normal and farm work is from four to six weeks behind the regular schedule. Flood waters have receded and streams are now within their banks, but all bottom lands are too wet to work. Some damage from floods has been reported. Need Good Weather But little ground is prepared at this time. Farmers are only able to work on high lands and well drained fields. With continued good weather much work will be done in the next two weeks and a slight increase in acreage is probable as farmers are all set for rush work as soon as conditions permit. Some hauing has been done where roads were in condition.

Winter wheat continues in good

condition generally, but in many fields

water has accumulated in low places and killed the plants. In such fields the plants are very yellow from excessive rainfall, and it is likely some damage will be caused from this

source. No insect damage has been reported. All wheat in bottom lands ( i3 killed, but this does not amount to; much.

acreage was not put in. It is now too late to plant in the south part, where a very small acreage was put in. Rye is in good condition generally, but in low places in fields water has accumulated and killed the plants.

Meadows and pastures are in excel-j lent condition. Clover seeding, with oats, is not as extensive a3 usual. Killing rosts occurred on several dates in the north part of the state, but it Is not hought any material damage was done to tree fruits except in a few localities where trees were Just in bloom. The set of fruit this year is very heavy and prospects for large crops are good. Small Potato Acreage A very small acreage of early potatoes was put In because of the wet condition of the soil. Many beds of tobacco have been established and plants are making satisfactory growth. Much barley was seeded during the last few days of tho month. The acreage will be somewhat curtailed, however, because of the lateness of the season. . Livestock generally Is in good condition except the mortality among spring pigs is very heavy. The farm labor supply is fully equal to the demand at this time. Vegetable gardeners were able to do some work during the last few days of the month and work was pushed to the limit. Transplanting progressed satisfactorily. Chubby Children Attract Children at Mine Trial (By Associated Press) CHARLESTON, W. Va., May 3 A

of the British income tax from six

shillings on the pound to five shillings brings the tax levied by Great Britain nearer the American basis according to comparisons made today by inter nal revenue bureau experts. A comparison of the .per-tax rates levied by Great Britain the United States will show, officials said, that the United States levies a higher rate of super-tax on the large incomes than Great Britain does, but a comparison of the normal tax shows that Great Britain levies a much higher rate of normal income tax and the exemptions are much smaller. Before the announcement of the new British budget, the normal tax in force

in Great Britain was six shillings, with reduced rates applicable where income fell within certain prescribed limits. No tax Is imposed by the British on incomes which do not exceed 130 pounds, while between 130 and 1,000 pounds certain allowances may be claimed similar to the personal exemptions and credit for dependents allowed by the federal income tax law in the United States. CRUDE petroleum, the raw material employed by the Standard Oil Company (Indiana), is so varied in character, that to manufacture products of standard quality, requires a profound knowledge of petroleum chemistry and the utmost skill in refining. Long experience has proved that the greater the scientific knowledge employed the more perfect will be the products manufactured. el The responsibility for the manufacturing of Standard Oil products is placed upon the shoulders of men trained to recognize the delicate variance of each complicated operation. This work also is checked carefully by highly trained scientists employed in the laboratories. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) bases its standards of manufacture upon the service which its products shall render the consumer. The maintenance of such standards is dependent upon the technical knowledge of the experts who formulate them. There is no factor in the activities of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) which yields greater benefit to the consumer, and which is followed more insistently, than that the men who have charge of each process must have highly specialized knowledge of every step in the process under their jurisdiction. This fact is so well established that each division of the manufacturing department has come to be a separate enterprise, and because of this extreme specialization every product coming from the refinery is in effect m primary product. For instance, the department which is responsible for manufacturing Polarine and other greases is in charge of men who have made a profound study of lubricants of this class : men who know intimately every step and every reaction which is necessary if these lubricants are to meet the high standards of quality which the laboratories have set. And so it is in every department of the organization. The men in charge of the several departments are recognized by the industry generally as masters of the intricate problems of manufacturing and marketing. It is this fact which has made this Company a leader in its field. Standard Oil Company Indiana) . 910 S. Michigan Aven Chicago, IIL
