Musings for the Evening It has long been our ambition to start, in this column, a department of interest to women touching upon beauty and domestic science. We have secured the services as editor of this department one who is not only an expert housekeeper but a great beauty as well. It took us nearly nine years of constant searching to find this combination. We will be glad to receive from our women readers contributions to this department. Our expert gives the following advice today How to Remove Freckles from Nose Hold nose in boiling water ten min-i utes. When skin has peeled off, freckle will be gone. TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It," "Up" THE GENTLE RAIN m How like the circling arms of the lover are the falling bits of rain that touch the earth finding place on leaves and grass and touching with color and life the beautiful arrangements of Nature. Like pearls dropping into the bosoms of flowers. How soothing as they hit the window panes and roll to their nests in the ground, to be taken up as life-givers later In buds and bark. What a thing to watch, what a thing to listen to this gentle rain that touches the air with Its moisture, and perhaps crops up later in some falling stream or bubbling spring. How the grass greens under its fondling and what a spectacle of beauty when it has ceased and turned over Its task to the Sun to complete. We are prone to appreciate too little this great gift of Nature the gentle rain. If the rain sometimes seems sad it 13 only because it Is thinking. For in every drop there lives hope and promise. I have watched this gentle rain from a hidden cabin deep in the wild among mountains in the West. I luve sat in a tent beside a beautiful lake and watched it mingle its life with that of the waves. I have seen it crossed by rainbows, and have sat in my writing room, and heard its patter on the roof and walks outside. And every time I love its message of inspiration and encouragement. For the gentle rain has a voice all its own an almost silent language that is universal around the world. How much we can learn from the rain and its giver! All our benefits would amount to nothing without its gracious coming.

He arrived in the Sunset state in 1876, settling in San Jose. He is 59 years old, having been born Aug. 3, 1861. He has been interested in Republican politics for many years and his law offices In San Francisco. He defeated Senator Phelan In a torrid campaign in the elections two years ago. After Dinner Stories Two negro quartermaster privates were standing on Trafalgar Square, a few weeks before the armistice, as a battalion of Scotch Highlanders passed. They watched the column approach without a word of comment, so great was their amazement at a Scotch soldier's uniform. After the battalion passed, one negro turned to the other and said: , "Nigger, what wuz dat?" "I dunno, lesting they wuz sojers." "What gits me is dis, dey wan't men, 'cause dey was wearin' skirts, an' dey ain't wimmen, "cause dey had whiskers." The other negroe's face brightened, , then he said: "You is a po' fool: Course dey wan t men, an dey wan t wimmen. Dey wuz one of dem Middlesex regiments we done heard so much about." Finally I heard of Mayr's Wonderful Remedy and it has certainly fixed me up fine. I am now as good as ever." By merely drawing on the end the knot disappears. This trick is very deceptive, as the knot is tied in an apparently genuine manner. The exact movements arc shown by the diagram. Hold one end of the hankerchief in the fingers of your left hand. The Important secret lies in bringing the loose end of the handkerchief over the back of the left hand. By this process the handkerchief Is held in place while the free end is pushed through the loop from the front, and not from the back as normally executed. When the hands pull on the ends the left hand comes out through the loop and the cloth is untied. IF YOUR. MOTHER . HAP To. GO To VAJORKPARK', STUP-FV AU. DAY Rippling Rhymes By Walt Mason ANCIENT PHILOSOPHERS I care not much for those wise hirds, those famed and mighty sages, who handed out such, weighty words they've thundered down the ages. In old Greek gardens once they sat, and lectured to their classes, on this philosophy or that, as proper for the masses. And while they Jawed the eager hicks who paid their hard-earn ed nickels, the farmers plowed with croked sticks, and reaped their hay with sickles. Oh, any old hewhiskered gent much logic could deliver, hut there was no one to invent a shotgun or a flivver. No screens were on the windows then, to make life calm and sweeter, and all night long the wise old men would swat the hug and ckeeter. These wise old fellows never thought of any sane invention, and bughouse things were all they taught, and all they deigned to mention. While they were spieling of the gods and of Olympian scandals, they might have garnered decent wads inventing tallow candles. Oh, all their faculties they put on tales of gods and dragons, and men were drilling round on foot because they had no wagons. The wise men of these stirring days don't sit around in gardens, and talk to little Willie Grays and little Dollie Vardens; they take a long white sheet of tin, some bolts of steel or copper, and make an auto that will spin when gas is in its hopper. Lessons in Correct English DON'T SAY: He LOVES apples. His DEVOTION could not be doubted. He swore FAITHFULNESS to his He wrote a DISTINCT account ot the affair. It is CLEAR that you are right. SAY: He LIKES annles. His LOYALTY could not be doubted. He swore ALLEGIANCE to his country. He wrote a LUCID account of the affair. It is OBVIOUS that you are right." The term "a man of straw" comes to us from the time when there was a class of persons who attended the law courts prepared to give evidence in any cause to any effect for a consideration. To indicate their nrofps. sion they wore wisps of straw in their Fhoes. GIRLS! LEMONS BLEACH SKIN WHITE Squeeze th& juice of two lemons into a bottle containing three ounces of Orchard White, which any drug store will supply for a few cents, shake well, and you have a quarter pint of harmless and delightful lemon bleach. Massage this sweetly fragrant lotion into the face, neck, arms and hands each day, then shortly note the beauty and whiteness of your skin. Famous stage beauties use this lemon lotion to bleach and bring that soft, clear, rosy-white complexion, also as a freckle, sunburn and tan bleach because it doesn't irritate. Advertisement.
