If you want to sneer, sneer. ' If you want to drink, go ahead. If you want to live in sin. go ahead. God won't stop you, but He will bring you into Judgment and make you pay for It when you are through. .God has decreed the freedom of the human will and. He stops at that de- : cree. He will not coerce you. He will not grab you by the throat and choke you to make you be decent. iNo! .And If you are not man. enough to be decent, and God wants you to to be decent, you can live Just as you please, hut know that when you get through God will step in. Let me say another thing. I am not one of those people that go up and down the land talking to men and women in all sorts of laborious dissertations. Jumbling and meaningless Jargon. I am not like a fellow who when asked: r "Are you going up to hear Bill" replied: "I don't like to go where I can't take my wife." Well, the old devil has been a good many places, I guess, where he never took his wife. You always keep shy of those bucksl If sin-wasn't bo deceitful it would mot be so attractive. The devil does j not- allow a man to stop and think that evey time he indulges his desire3 ,'that desire is growing stronger and j through accumulative force of habit i he is growing weaker In his power to resist. it. i I meet a good many people who seem to think that to be a Christian : means- to be a sort of a dishrag kind of a fellow, a wlshwashy milksop. I want to tell you you never made a bigger blunder in your life. Before I was converted I could put on a pair of running shoes and hit the dirt 100 yards in 10 seconds from the crack of the pistol. I could circle the diamond in 14 seconds from a standing start And I was handy with my dukes, too. Christianity Does . Not Weaken Health. I could run just as fast after I was decent as I could before I Was decent, and I could circle the bases Just as fast after I prayed as I could before I prayed.- I can still handle my dukes pretty good. I can go so fast for five rounds you can't see me. I meet a lot of people that seem to think that a mystery. They don't know that Christianity was intended to "Increase the highest . possible degree of happiness, and the man that flies in the face of God is a fool. Years ago when I quit playing base ball I became Secretary of one of the'Y. M. C. A.'s in Chicago. I had the ealoon route, going through saloons and giving men tickets inviting them to come to the Y. M. C. A. to our men's meetings. One day I went Into a saloon that used to stand across the street from where the old Boeton Store now stands, and I was in there giving our tickets, and I met a voting fellow that I used to know out in IbwaT and I said to him: "What are you doing in here George? You are three sheets1 to the wind now." I said. He said, "I came over Sunday night and I dropped in here between acts to take a drink." I said: "You -have taken too much I no!' .. He said: "Yes, I know it." "I said: "Do you want to become a i drunkard T " ; Herald: "I don't Intend to become I a rrunkard." I said": "You can't find a drunkard oil God's 'jearth that started out intending to be a drunkard when he , took his first drink. Not a one! You can't find' a man today that intended i when he was a boy to become a drunk-

old devil came staggering in out of! the storm and the snow. He had a straw hat on, dirty and worn; he had a torn shirt on, and old dirty shoes; eyes blood-shot, corners of his eyes full of matter, vermin wriggling over him. I said: "Do you see that poor old devil? There was a. time when he Btood where you stand with as good a Job as you have and as good a suit of clothes as you have on. And you go up and ask that old bum if he ever intended to be a bum." Friend Laughs at Experience. 1 t When he started out he walked over to the bartender and said: "Can you give a poor old' bum a drink of j wniSKy r ana ine Dariceeper poureu t out a glass of whisky, and, shaking, ho threw it down with a gulp. He shrugged his shoulders and headed out into the storm. My friend laughed at me because I called the matter to his attention. . One year later I stood on the corner of Madison and Clark streets in front of where the Morrison hotel stands now it was a clothing store ! then giving out tickets inviting men to come to Fargo Hall to a meeting down there. Down through the snow came a drunken fellow, eyes bloodshot, face dirty, clothes greasy and ragged. I recognized my friend that gave me the ha ha. The year before he had lost his Job in the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad general offices. There he was, a common hobo, going from niace to nlace for a handout. The devil doesn't allow vou to stop and think that every Indulgence in a sin weakens your power of resistance. Christian character oh, that's your capital! That's what you do business on I That's what enables a man to go to a bank and borrow money without somebody going as security on the notel . Christianity is character. There Is a big difference between character and reputation. Your reputation is what people say about you and think, but your character is what God and your wife and the angels know you to e. Oh. there's many a man has a reputation for being a good, noble, I upright sort of a man, whose heart is as black as tar, and whose character would make a black mark on a lump of coal. So there's a big difference between character and reputation! Had Utmost Confidence In Evangelist Years ago I was out in Terre Haute, Indiana. I was out there helping in a series of meetings, and I had occasion to go to a bank to get some silver change. I was admiring the beauty of the bank when I was introduced to the vice president, Mr. McCormick. They had a mosaic floor, beautiful tapestry on the walls, and the furniture was mahogany. I said: "Why," we haven't anything as fine as this in Chicago!" He said, "You don't tell me! We are proud of our vaults, too," he said, "haven't you seen them?" I told him that I hadn't, and he opened up the vaults and let me in. I wandered from one to another. I could have filled my pocket full of $10 bills if I had wanted to. Nobody looked at me. Why did they trust me in their bank vaults? They knew that I was down there preaching the gospel of 3esus Christ, and any man that believes and lives the gospel of Jesus Christ is trustworthy wherever you will put him. There was a time in my life when a man wouldn't trust me to hold a yellow dog on a street corner for him. Well, what are some men doing to get ready for the Judgment? "Rejoice, oh, young man, in your youth; i and let thy heart cheer thee In the days of thy youth. Go ahead, hit it up if you want to; but know now that for all these things God will bring you into Judgment! You say: "I'm an old man, ready to die, and I don't believe in God." Well, you believe in that much of it anyway. It is appointed unto man once to die. You believe that! If that's true, then the rest of it is true. If that's a lie, then the rest of it is a lie. You can't get around it by any logic. It is appointed' unto man once to die. And the Bible says: "but after death. Judgment," so you have got to admit that that's true too; that you stand ready for it when you leave the world. What Are You Doing to Get Ready? But what are some fellows doing to get ready for the Judgment? Well, I find there are some who are ljving only for money. Oh, there are fellows whose entire idea of life is one long continued, busy tangle from morning till night! The gambler sells his soul for money, the saloon keeper sells his soul for money oh, the girl will sell her virtue for money, and the burglar will crack your safe to steal what he didn't have the manhood or the grit or ambition to earn, and the get-rich-quiek fellow will float fake mining stock to pick your pockets of money because the dirty dog could not earn it himself; or somejfellow will forge a note to draw money out of the bank because he can't make' good under his own name. And so a girl, I say, will sell her womanhood and try to Justify her sins on the grounds of her needs Do you mean to say that any man's needs are tantamount with any of those things? Do you mean to say the gratification of his desires are tantamount to the moral law? Do you mean to say that because he wants a suit of clothes that that's tantamount to sticking a gun under your nose? , The Bible hasn't one word to say against success. The Bible applauds success. The Bible has no quarrel with success. The Bible says that the man that doesn't provide for his family is worse than an infidel. There is nothing against success at all In the Bible not a word. According to our standard of gold and silver, as I told you, Abraham was worth a billion and a half dollars ; and David was worth nearly three billions, and Solomon was worth over five billions of dollars, almost the amount that we raised for the war loan that was subscribed. And. therefore, if you want to live in order to give of your surplus of accumulations to make the world better and help good, worthy Institutions and organizations, I hope to God that you will all died worth a million apiece. But if you want to live to get all you can and can all ycu get, and never

Whenever you begin to talk about somebody that Is clean cut for Jesus Christ, as a cameo, you think of some longhaired piker with celluloid collar and cuffs, that never shines his shoes or has his clothes pressed, never went to a dentist, you dont think of somebody that can get up and go for Jesus Christ like a Twin Six. No, that's the great trouble! mind how you get It, I hope to God you will die in the poor-house. We have got a lot of guys In this country that stand around on corners and cuss and damn and whittle and spit and Condemn everybody that's got a dollar, whether the man that has the money is a scaawag or not; and I notice that all these guys that knock the fellow that's got the money would take every cent the fellow's got if he'd give it to them. You Must Work To Succeed Do you think that that fellow is going out and work and sweat and toil and labor and then hand his money over to you? You lazy loon, not on your tintype! Not on your tintype! Not on your life! And so we live for money, and yet if you owned the world you'd be mighty glad if you could only have sianamg room in heaven when you die, Vanderbilt, head of the Vanderbllt rney r. S family, who laid the foundation for that colossal fortune, was a young man he poled a yawl from New York To Staten Island, and picked up the pennies of those who wanted transportation John Jacob Astor went out west and bought skins from the Indians, brought the skins back and sold them and then invested the money in Manhattan real estate. He had a brain and a head long enough to see that New York was going to become the metropolis of this country, if not of the whole world. And that's why the Astor fortune amounts to so much today, because John Jacob Astor had a long head on him, and he laid the foundation for it, walking over the mountains and sleeping in snowdrifts, and all that sort of thing. How He Made Vast Fortune Commodore Vanderbllt made his money poling the yawl from New York to Staten Island. When he died -he was said to be worth $200,000,000 He once sent for a friend of mine who was pastor of a church he told' a friend of mine, who told me and said: "I wish you'd sing for me." He said: "What will I sing?" He asked him to sing that song he'd heard his mother sing: "Come, ye sinners, weak and wounded, poor and needy, sic and troubled." And the old Commodore tossed his head from side to side and said: "Yes, I am needy," and he rolled his eyes upon tne ceiling where hung the paintings worth their weight in gold. The next day one man in Wall street said to another: "Have you heard the news this morning?" V'What news?" .'Commodore Vanderbilt is dead." "How much did he leave?" "He left It all!" Diamond Jim Brady died not long ago in New York. He was familiarly known to the theatre-going crowd. He had diamonds by the peck, they say, worth millions. Don't you suppose he'd ha-ve given it all if he could have staid a .little bit longer? -Don't you suppose hed have given it all? Certainly he would, my friends! Did you ever think as the hearse passed by that it won't be long till you are taking a ride in that blackplumed hack, and did you ever think in your search fJr gold that "a dead man's hand can't one dollar save, but you leave it all when you go to the grave?" So don't worry about your money. There will be no pockets in vrair shroud. Your arms will be so stiff you couldn't get them in there anyway. So don't worry about that! Don't stop for anything I may say today. If your idea is to accumulate money, and if you are going to lie or steal or cheat or use crooked methods to' get it; if you are not willing, my friends, to go along like the others and want to cut, across lots, go ahead! Pile up your silver until you get a pile as big as Manhattan. When you die you can't take it with you. Years ago a literary debate was held in London, at which Thomas Carlyle was present, and the lady hostess of the evening was bemoaning the fact that the Jews had spumed and repudiated Jesus. . She tended her tirade and strictures by making this appeal to Carlyle: "If Jesus had lived in our day, how gladly we vould have sat at His feet listening to. the divine precepts and with what pleasure and. alacrity we would have performed His slightest request. Would we not?" "No," snapped the old Scotch cynic. There are several things that you can do and there are several courses -you may pursue. You can deny His Divinity if you want to. You can say He was an imposter many did it in His day, many are doing it now. Oh,' some went so far as to say He was a devil, some said He had a devil in Him. You say you wouldn't do that. Very well, I am not asking you to do it. I am simply suggesting several courses you may pursue. You can deny that you need a savior, you can say you have no soul, you can say there is no hereafter, you can say that death is eternal sleep, you can pretend that you naven X sinnea, you nan aay mcic is no Judgment to come, i nousanas aia it in His day, Thousands are doing it today. I don't say you may; I am suggesting a course. Do you want to take that course? What Shall I do? Answer Right. "What shall I do?" Let me help you to decide. Do you want that? You can openly reject Him if you choose. Many did it in His day, many are doing it today. Instead of taking Him to their hearts, they sent Him to the cross. See 'them tear His hair from Hia face and from His head. See them spit, hear. their oaths. Oh, they preferred Barrabas do you? Do you prefer vice to Jesus? Do you prefer lust to Jesus? You say: "Hold on, Bill; hold on Bill, I am not what I ought to be, but I am not that low down. I don't want to trim with that gang." I don't say you do. I am suggesting it to you that's all.- Do you pretend to accept Him, you can call yourself by His name, while your heart is CHILDREN TO SING When Mr.- Rodeheaver asked the little ones Saturday afternoon if they could maks up a chorus to sing next Saturday afternoon for the Sunday school convention, there was a great chorus of "Yes." Why should you sacrifice your soul for fear of displeasing?. Anybody that you displease by being a Christian is a lowdown pup I don't care who he is in my opinion. If to be a Christian you displease somebody, God be praised that you have found out that their friendship Isnt worth three whoops this side of perdition. "What Bhall I do with Jesus?" You can be a trimmer. Wait a minute. It didn't pay for old Pilate to trim, and I want to warn you before you make that decision, if you do. it won't pay for you to. Pilate was a trimmer and he afterwards lost the favor of Caesar. He was driven from his position. He lost his reason and died at the hand of a suicide. That was the end of Pilate. He trimmed the proposition. It won't pay for you; it didn't pay for him. It Doesn't Pay To Be Two-faced. You can do as Judas did. You can betray Him, you can sell Him. Judas got 30 pieces of silver $15.92. What did you get? Did you get that automobile you drove up here tonight? Did you get that suit of clothes you are wearing? Did you get that dress you have on? Did you get the Jewels that scintil late from your ears? Oh, what did you get? , Did you get a raise in your salary? Did you get enough money to buy that house? You can do just as Judas did you can sell Him. Some people sell Him and give their virtue; some sell their manhood, their womanhood, their honesty. I am not asking to do it they did. You can repute His Divinity if you want, but you have the warm, glowing historical Christ left with you. Go ahead what will you do? You can't write the history oX this world and leave Jesus out of it any more than you can write the history of Rome and leave out Julius Caesar or Mark Anthony, or you can write the history of the United States and leave out George Washington or Benjamin Franklin or Aaron Burr or Admiral Dewey or Decature or any one else. Jesus Christ was truly a nistorica! character. Don't you know, my friends, that Julius Caesar lived and died 42 years before Jesus Christ was born? . Are the members of the United States senate and house of repJesus' strong intellect do? Was Grover resentatives and justices of the supreme court are they all fools? They are believers in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Is William Jennings Bryan a fool? Is he a believer in Jesus Christ as the Soif of God? What are you going to do with the Christ of these Christian men? Was the late William McKinley a fool? When the 'assassin's bullet struck him down at Buffalo, fondly and revently did he pray that he would be spared, and when they gave him the anesthetic and the doctors bent over him to catch what might have been his last words, he was muttering the Lord's Prayer.. , We smilfd and dried our tears and we shook -hands and forgot our political differences. Then the relapse came and we were informed that he was growing worse. They sent for his wife. 'He looked up and said: "It's God's will His way, not ours, be done." . , . And he started, my friends, to repeat "Nearer, My God to Thee, Nearer to Thee." and the lamp of life flickered and went out forever Down the streets of Buffalo went the funeral procession and the band played "Nearer My God to Thee." The railroad track from Buffalo to Washington was lined with people that stood with bowed, uncovered heads and tear-stained cheeks, and they sang f'Nearer My God to Thee." Down Pennsylvania avenue the fu-' neral procession, headed by marine bands, and they played "Nearer My God to Thee." - I journeyed to Canton that I might be present at the funeral and for five hours I stood on the street corner, opposite the Stark county court house where his . body was to He in state.
