WHO'S WHO WHAT'S 1 HAPPEXE0 Richard Brabant, a successful young lawer, has given a year's leave of absence to his wife, Sally, hoping that she will be changed from a butterfly to a woman by learning something of life. She meets Keith Gilbert, always labelled "Danfreroua,' and through him associates with New York's gayest crowd of celebrities; among them, Lee Craig, a pretty artist, and Rra.ha.rn Rrowna. a well-known fi

CHAPTER -XLII THE FURY OF THE SCORNED To Sally It -was like a nightmare, that flight toward the -woods. She could not wrench herself from Keith Gilbert's grasp; he held her too tightly. She stumbled, tripped, and found hersell dragged along the ground until she regained her feet somehow. She screamed, but was so breathless that her voice was barely audible. They reached the edge of the black strip of the woods. Gilbert plunged forward, turning away from the path.
and Sally almost uncons clo usly threw an arm across her face to protect it from the low hanging
branches. Gilbert
had not slackened his mad pace, and there was actual
danger In tbat headlong race through the trees.
Then suddenly she felt his hold on
her wrist loosen. He had stumbled over a log, and fallen to bis knees. She snatched her hand away and turned back toward the golf links and the club house, ashe thought. Frantic with the desire to escape, she ran wildly. Her breath came in great, sobbing gasps; it seemed to Tasp its way through her lungs. Tripping over protruding roots, lurching against the
trees, as her strength began to give
out, she hurried on. And behind her came Gilbert. She
could hear the twigs and smaller
branches breaking as he forced a way
threatening,
"Well, you don't look it you're

home one of the maids can tell her.
And then I'm going to take you to her
house at once."
His voice was curt, peremptory, but Sally liked it. It .was a relief to be told what to do, somehow. She was glad to go with him to one of the Randall cars, and to feel that the evening's melodramatic events were as remote as if they had actually been the nightmare that they seemed. "I feel as if I'd been 111 and horribly delirious," she told Calhoun. "The whole thing is so preposterous Keith was like a mad man." t "That's what he is mad with tie desire to get what he wants," no matter what it Is or who stands in the
way," he answered. "He's as undisciplined as a wolf, and about as unprincipled, I'd say. And you " "I've been a fool," Sally exclaimed, disgustedly. "It was such fun to do exactly as I liked, to be free to be as wild as I liked, that it went to my
head. And now well, things must
change, but somehow I don't know
just what to do. I m so at a loss, so useless." She might have added "And so un
happy," but she did not, and Calhoun mentally supplied the words, as he saw the sadness inkier eyes. 'No, you're not," he declared. "Why, there are dozens of things that you can do, hundreds of ways that you can find happiness. Mrs. Lane has told me of this matrimonial vacation that you're taking why don't you turn it to account?" "I would if knew how," ehe answer-

that the chase had lasted through an;
eternity, instead of for a few brief mo
ments.
She began to realize that she was lost. Had she been running toward the links, she would have come into the open sooner. She must have gone on into the woods instead. Panic seized her. She wa3 too exhausted
to keep on much longer. She feared r
to think of what would happen when she. fell at last and could not go on. He would scar her face, he had said with a knife, with acid ho? She would go through life marked by his fury. At last she came to the golf links.
The club house seemed miles away,: but her very desperation gave her-
new strength. She never knew howi she managed to reach it; there was a! nightmare of effort, seemingly as useless as running In a dream, that takes one nowhere. Then she stumbled up
the steps and fell on the deserted side porch of the club. She knew that Gilbert was coming rapidly toward her, yet she was incapable of moving. Her limbs were leaden, her body limp. From within came the laughter of the guests at supper, yet ehe could not even summon strength enough to call for help. And then she heard rapid steps crossing the porch. A man's arms lifted her; she found herself leaning against someone's shoulder. A voice 6aid "Sally!" and she opened her eyes to find Neal Calhoun's face above her.
"You always rescue me," she told him a little later, when he had established her in a big chair, and had brought her wrap from the dressing room to cover her tattered frock. "You're a sort of guardian angel." "Yes, thanks to rqy job of tracking
Keith Gilbert," he answered grimly. "He's a slippery customer, but this! time we've got him safe enough I saw two of my men collar him just as I ran to pick you up. Tell me, are you all right?"
She nodded, though she was trembling still from fright and exhaustion.
