WHO'S WHO A1MD WHAT'S i IIAPPEMCD Tilchard Brabant, a successful young lawer, has given a year's leave of absence to his wife, Sally. hoping that ' she. will be changed from a butterfly to a woman by learning something of life. Sho meets Keith Gilbert, always labelled "Dangerous." and through him associates with New York's gayest crowd of celebrities; among them, Aie Craig, a pretty artist, and Graham Browne, a well-known financier. The gay life that Sally leads
Is not approved by her friend, Barbara Lane, an old-fashioned wife, but Is shared by Patricia Lorlng, a modern flapper, who resents the fact that Gilbert is madly in love with Sally as she wants him for herself. With Sally she goes to a house-party at Gilbert's country place, and Is there when revenue officers appear to arrest Gilbert on a charge of bootleeglng on a big scale, and because one of his men has killed an officer during a fight. Gilbert flees into the night, taking Sally with him, and tries to kidnap her, but she la rescued by Neal Calhoun, who Is trailing Gilbert. Gilbert accuses Sally of betraying him to Calhoun and vows vengeance. He is imprisoned, but escapes.

CHAPTER XXXVII THE CLOUDS OF DISAPPOINTMENT To Barbara Lane, it seemed the last drop in a very bitter cup that Sally was going to the Randall's house-par-ty with her and Andy. "She has simply everything!" she told herself disgustedly. "I might have got along all right in what I have, if I hadn't had to compete with her! But she'll look so lovely in her
stunning gowns, and I'll look so dubby beside her and that man Andy wants to interest in his patents will devote himself to her and I won't be of any use at all!" For it was for Andy, this bitterness of spirit. The Randalls were to have as their guest a man of prominence,
a nnancier whose name was of weight in the world where Andrew Lane stood at the outer portals. Often he had talked with Barbara of what might happen if he could just meet some man of wealth to whom he
could talk of his man who' would see
The suit was an old one, but she told herself passionatr' that that didn't matter; Andy looked more wondeii,'" in them, betten than any other man would in the .very newest dinner Jacket! And it was with a dancing heart that she went down the broad stairway at his side. But as she reached the wide hall the gay little flame of her joy went out, drenched by the cold water of disappointment. For In the drawing room just beyond stood Sally, exquisite in a frock of turquoise blue, and laughing tip into the eyes of a man whose appearance stamped him as the financier in whom the Lanes were so Interested. As Barbara caught sight of them, Mrs. Randall approached, and Sally turned to her with a smile, laying one slender hand on his arm. "Of course I know Graham Browne," she exclaimed. "He's an old friend of mine! We're havinga reunion!" And Barbara's heart sank. Tomorrow A Silver Lining.

And then the Randalls had Invited them to this house-party, just a small affair, and had asked exactly the right

And Immediately she had begun to plan to help in this caipaign of Andy's to look her prettiest and be her most charming, in the hope that somehow the great man might be entertained and more kindly inclined to the husband whom she adored. "Things like that do help!" she had told herself, as she laundered the dainty blouses that she had made for herself, and refurnished her one party frock. She had dyed it in coffee, put It over a new silk slip, prssl its laciness with scrupulous care. It
wasn't smart, she acknowledge, but it was pretty, and Andy said that It wa3 the most becoming dress she'd ever

been most amazed had. she known Barbara's thoughts;" indeed, within her own mind such a tumult raged that she would have wondered how anyone else could feel so upset as she did at that moment. They were late in reaching the Randall home. As they swung into the drive that led between great elms the shadows lay long across the smooth lawns, and the great beds of hyacinths that lifted their fragrant blossoms at the side of the house were touched with the day's last sunshine. The beauty of it all delighted Bar
bara and inspired her to hope again; surely among such surroundings
things must go well, she told herself;
as she dressed for dinner. "Hook me up. dear," she urged Andy, as he finished shaving. "And hurry I want just one more look at the gardens before dinner." Obediently he wrestled with hooks and patent fasteners, then bent to kiss the soft curve of her neck as he finished his task, when there was a knock at the door, and a voice asked if Madam would like any assistance. Stilling a giggle, Barbara sent the maid away, and turned to Join in Andy's laughter. "One ha3 a maid when ones' rich, milady!" he told her with a chuckle. "We poor folks forget those trifling details, don't we?" "We do," agreed Barbara, curling upon the windo wseat to put the studs in his shirt. She adored thi3" big husband of herB so that she did not look at the gardens again after all it warmed her heart so to watch him as he dressed in the evening clothes that his broad shoulders set off so well.
