WASHINGTON, D. C, March 2S. Plans for the United States government's part in the Brazilian international centennial exposition are going steadily forward. Eighteen countries have agreed to help Brazil celebrate her hundred years cf freedom from Portugal next September, and Rio de Ja

neiro, where the festivities and the exposition are to be held, is already the scene of busy preparations.

The president and the secretary of

state some time ago accepted Brazil's invitation for the United States to take part in the exposition. Congress appropriated $1,000,000 for the expenses

of a United States exhibit, and the day President Harding left Washington for his Florida trip, legislation was

enacted to permit a commission of five to represent the United States government at the centennial celebration, bebeginning Sept. 7, next. The president is expected to appoint this commission at an early date.

The Brazilian affair is the first seri

ous attempt at a big international ex

position in South America. At first

the Brazilian government expected to

have only a short celebration of the hundredth aniversary of independence. Later it was decided to have exhibits showing the progress of Brazil in her

hundred years of freedom, and plans

for this modest exhibit rapidly assumed ambitious proportions as the enthusiasm of the Brazilians grew, until now the exposition is expected to be a tremendous spectacle. It was expected originally to hold the exhibition from Sept. 7 to Dec. 15. Then as the plans began to take in for

eign countries the date was extended several times, and now the Brazilian government expects to keep the exposition open until March 31. One Commission Named President Harding has appointed a commission of four men and a woman to work under the Department of State

in making arrangements for the exhibits from this country. The head of this commission, Mr. D. C. Collier, is in

Rio de Janeiro now. The other four members, headed by Frank A. Harrison, deputy commissioner general in Mr. Collier's absence, are working In this country, with headquarters at Washington. Construction on the building which 13 to house the United States' exhibits is already started. Brazil has taken part in eight expositions held In the United States, and she has been represented by some fine buildings. At the St. Louis exposition the Brazilian building attracted so much attention that instead of

scrapping it when the fair was over, Brazil had it taken down and shipped to Rio. Then it was put together again for use as the House of Deputies. As a compliment to the United States it was called the Monroe Palace, after the author of the Monroe Doctrine. The United States now has the op

portunity to return the compliment. The building which we erect to represent the United States is not to be one of the flimsy, ornate structures

typical of expositions. Out of the million dollar fund thi3 country has bought the land on which its exhibition building is to stand and is erecting a $300,000 building of permanent con-

naval vessels will be stationed In the

harbor for public inspection. A moving picture theatre is to be erected temporarily next to the exhibit building so that the American exhibits can be made clearer by pictures. Both the United States and Brazil

hope to come into closer touch through this exposition. There is a friendship of old standing betwen the two nations. Brazil is of a Portuguese speaking republic in a continent of Spanish coun-

only from the government point of

view. The exhibits which are sanctioned by congress and paid for out of the treasury may be of government work only. Some of them show what the government is doing in commercial ways, as in the displays of the Department of Commerce, but there may be no display of private enterprise in the government building. American private concerns will be represent-

struction and in the style of archi

I WEDNESDAYS

THURSDAY

After the exposition the exhibit will become the American Embassy. This makes our part in the Brazilian exposition a very practical investment. In the past, structures at fairs have often been of such temporary character and so cheaply built that the materials were not wortn salvaging. The money spent for such buildings 'was an outlay

without any direct return. At Rio, the

I United States is to create a beautiful

background for its panorama of prog-! ress and at the same time it w-ill acquire a much needed government building. We own only . a few embassies and legations; it is claimed that the Brazilian embassy is -to be the finest of these. To Prevent Duplication Representatives of the ten government departments are holding meetings to plan for the exhibits to be sent by this government, so that there will be no duplication. There will be many exhibits from the Department of Agriculture, for Brazil is greatly interested in this industry, and our department does wonderful experimental work. Perhaps a few of the demonstrators from the extension service may be sent to show the Brazilian women some

of the applied science that is available to American housewives.

The Brazilian people will be Inter

ested also in our forest work, our system of public parks and reservations, our mining methods, and the life saving work of our coast guard. There will be small displays from the army and navy, and probably one or more

representative to the United States to show her feeling of friendship. New Expression of Friendship Closer friendship will be expressed now largely in closer industrial and commercial relations. Yet as far as our official exhibits are concerned we can show our commercial progress
