Chips and Slips JOHNNY MITCHELL'S GOING. There Is a well-defined rumor that this brilliant but Ill-fated lnfielder may be disposed of by the Yanks In a trade which probably will involve an outfielder. Mitchell probably would welcomo such a move. He has shown wonder ful spirit with the Yanks and deserves a change that will give him a real chance to show his wares. He Is a sweet shortstop and would be accept able to many clubs. He was ready to and capable of subbing for Roger Peckinpaugh in any emergency last year, but Peck gave hrm little chance. Then when Peckinpaugh left last winter, Everett Scott was obtained for the same job. And unless John is traded he faces the prospect of warming tbo bench as sub for Scott who has not missed a game in five years. Which isn't a pleasant prospect Huggins' outfield situation is still up In the air. He neds one more Al gardener. Detroit, for instance, is badly in .need of an infielder like Mitchell and could spare an outfielder to acquire one. So you can look for such a trade. , Mitchell was obtained by the Yanks in the spring of 1921 from Vernon in the Pacific Coast league, where he made a rep as a- fielder and hit at a fair prait for two years. In 1919 he slammed out 204 hits in 182 games, running up a .283 average He scored 123 runs, hit 17 doubles and eight triples and stole 41 bases. In 1920 he played in 196 games slammed out 214 hits, including 41 doubles, 16 triples and a homer, stole 20 bases, laid down 36 sacrifice hits and scored 120 runs.. At a town In Alabama the bank installed a new safe, and the man In charge had employed a local darkey to help him. The massive and finely hot Y polished parts of the vault were wrap ped in burlap to prevent scarring, and after uncrating the darkey asked: "Mlstuh Gawge, kin I have thet theh carpet stuff?" "Why, yes,' answered the boss, and then he asked: "What for?" "Well, suh, Mlstuh Gawge, that theh am jus wnut 1 bin nuntin tun to make me some wintah undah clothes."
