HUMANITARIAN ACTS OF MICHIGAN PEOPLE

iif Din OTnnii diu oiunhi i (By Associated Press) DETROIT March il. The hu manitarian impulses of the peoples of Michigan have never been better exemplified than during the recent storm, when the wild animal life of the entire state was threatened with extinction by the sleet and ice that covered the ground for days. Despite the heroic measures taken by the v people of the northern part of the state, the storm was fo severs that It Is feared that on the western ; side years will be required to replace birds and beasts lost and starved. Talk already Is being heard of asking the next legislature to tighten the game laws for a long number of years to avert the passing of the birds altogether. ' The stories of the hardships voluntarily shouldered by the citizens rf northern Michigan in order that their friends of the air and the forests might defeat the forces of nature that sought to stamp them out, are Just beginning to come into Detroit. Countless in stances are recorded of the self-sacrifice of these northern Michigan folk who forgot their own comforts to minister to the things that usually receive but scant attention. Iced Food Supply "When the Ice king descended upon the district he. left behind a coating of Ice through which bird claws and beaks could not break to reach the natural food underneath. Deer and other animals, usually able to scrape away the snow with their hoofs and gain sustenance, found their efforts Kol1ra4 V.w tha 1rv harrlpr Th hi rein

4f and beast3 were unable to. find food on trees and bushes because they, .like the earth, were encrusted with tho Icy mantle. Although farmers and townspeople alike rallied to the call and placed food where it could be reached quickly by the suffering Inhabitants of the woods, the task was 60 great and the ' need so urgent ' that thousands of birds and animals are known to have died from starvation before aid could be taken to them. Hundreds of dead partridges and Bmall animals havo been found In the Petoskey district Near Cadillac the number that starved was even greater, according to reports, because birds found buds of bushes and trees completely coated with ice.

Theo. Van Cina painting "The Cavallier."

Theo. Van Cina, an artist Tving in a dingy studio in Chicago, is call r "The man with a $1,000,000 secret." He is said to be the only man . in the world who can paint a picture and age it 500 years in a single day. This feat is accomplished through Jbis knowledge of all schools of painting, tones, methods of treatment and skilful imitating of brush marks. According to Van Ci- a he was engaged when twenty-five years old by a Dutch nobleman. His patron borrowed masterpieces and had Van Cim. copy them. The nobleman then returned the originals and retained the coDies.

The Slacker," one of the most popular subjects ever released A rugged dramatic punch plus a de lightful touch of romance makes "The Barricade." William Christy Cabanne's production, distributed by R-C Pictures Corporation, one of the really worth while subjects of the season to date. Mr. Cabanne chose for his production a story by Dr. Daniel Carson Goodman, who has to his credit "The Wonder Man," in which Georges Carpentier made his first big hit in pictures and many other notable productions. In the cast are William A. Strauss, Kenneth Harlan, Katherine Spencer, Dorothy Richards, James HarriBon, Eugene Borden and John O'Connor. MURRETTE Of course, everyone 13 talking about "Theodora," the big film to apear at the Murrette theatre. All who have seen it marvel at one or two or three features of the massive production. Some are moved to speculation and comment concerning the big scene in the circus, where the lions are turned on the crowds every one has a theory of how this wonderful scene was manipulated for the, camera some have marveled at the grouping or such a mass of people; the principal comment is upon the architecture, the scenery where was it made, by whom and how? That's a long story. When the Italian film company decided to make a picture that would o around the world and cause the whole world to open its eyes to a great accomplishment, negotiations were put on foot GOOD FOR THAT TLl COUGH For quick relief from the wearing coujrha that "hans on" after the grippe or influenza, take Foley's Honey and Tar. Perhaps nothing has ever been presented on the local stage to compare with the kind of performance given In "Indian Revelries." Unusually beauti ful scenes enhance the splendor of the offering. If applause may be taken as an Indication of worth, and It usually Is, the act Is one of the best seen here this year. Beautiful girls, and the native dignity of the Indian chiet combine to make a great act. A good musical act is that of Frank . and Milt Brittan. Piano and xylo-. phone and cornet and trombone are the combinations used. They are good to hear. Their imitation of Ted Lewis and his jazz bands sets all feet to ting- j ling. I - Comedy appears .although In refined form) when Pairman and Patrick take ! their places. The older of the two pos-1 sesses a remarkably, strong, well-cul- i tured singing voice.
