' " f On to Nashville The whole community will watch with par

donable pride the impression which the high

school orchestra will make on the musicians at Nashville, .before whom the boys and girls will

soon give a series of concerts.

The high school orchestra has been one of

the objects of pride in this community for many yearsl and in turn it' has reciprocated by giving to the city and its school system a standing in

educational circles which is enviable.

: But never has it had an opportunity to dem

onstrate its ability before such an assembly of

critics as will hear it at Nashville. One may say

that it faces its crucial test as a musical organ

ization. The citizens know that it will perform

in a creditable manner and will return home

laden with the plaudits and commendations of the music supervisors of America and of the

citizens of Nashville.

A small suni of money still needs to be raised

to insure the expenses of the trip. The public may encourage the youthful players immensely by attending the concert Thursday evening. The

proceeds of the entertainment will go to the orchestra.

Time Flies , The centennary of the birth of Gen. U. S. Grant, which will be celebrated in the counties of his birth and youth, April 27 to 29. recalls the rapid flight of time. Few of us realize that 100 years have elapsed since the birth of the man who later led the Union forces to victory in the

sanguinary struggle of the North and South.

The rapidly thinning ranks of the men who

fought at his side and with-the other generals of

the Civil war may suggest the thought that be

fore long few will be left of that mighty array,

but the thought that 100 years have passed since most of them were born comes as a surprise to

their children and grandchildren.

The ceremonies attending the celebration of the anniversary of Gen. Grant's birth will be im

posing. President Harding, Gen. Pershing, and other high officers of the government will visit the plot of ground on which formerly stood the cabin in which Gen. Grant was born, there to pay tribute to the man whose genius and determination ended the conflict between the sections. ,

This celebration will bring back hallowed memories to the survivors of the mighty armies that were recruited in the North to expel slavery and perpetuate the Union. The Grant anniversary will flash before their mind's eye many

decades of the nation's history its material development and the gradual unfolding of its institutions. Our history since the Civil war is based primarily upon their efforts and sacrifices. They made possible the continuance of the American republic as one union of many states. For that service we cannot give an adequate re-wafd.

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It," "UpTHE LOVE OF BEAUTY Nothing can stay the walk of beauty in the world. Like the overflowing thought of the great Creator Himself, It keeps permeating into the nooks and by ways of the everywhere to mix with color, and sunshine and song. So that even the most stupendous happenings of the earth bow before its Eilen""power. I came across a little book the other day entitled "Recreation" by Viscount Grey, the great Englishman whose genius and high moral courage guided Britain through her early war negotiations. Speaking of the war period, Grey says: "In those dark days I found some support in the steady progress unchanged' of the beauty of the seasons. Every year, as Spring came back unfailing and unfaltering, the leaves came out with the same tender green, the birds sang, tho flowers came up and opened, and I felt that a great power of nature for beauty was not affected by the war." There is nothing to stir the soul like beauty. And there is noth-, lng so permanent in its appeal.. It plays upon the chords of greatness In human beings and calls for them to look higher each day and to keep of good courage. When all else is gone, beauty remains! And it is free to all. It is everywhere day and night. Appreciate it and you will never be poor In spirit or totally forsaken. There i9 no season or clime into which beauty does not enter. It Is able to warm the coldest heart and to cheer the loneliest man or woman. But you must let it into your heart and it must saturate your senses. The love of beauty Is the beginning of happiness. The more you get of it, the more you want, and the more you get and want, the more you desire to give it to others and to arouse their appreciation of it. How rich are they who love beauty and drink it into their souls! A poor man met a millionaire out among the trees. "I am a much richer man than you are," said the poor man to the rich one. "How do you figure that out?" replied the one who worked daily to get more . and more money. "Well, I am richer than you are because I have all the money I want and you haven't," said the poor man. Beauty belongs to everyone and in as great a proportion as one chooses to take it to one.

Who's Who in the Day's News

After Dinner Stories For daya.Anne had been seeking employment. Work of any description; her pride was but a shred of its former self. - ,. - Anne, chilled and despondent, was slowly walking up one-of the -side streets, hungrily' gazing Into the windows. In one of the windows appeared a placard "Waitress Wanted." Eagerly Anne entered and nervously inquired, for the manager. The manager asked;, 'i - "Well, what can Ido for you?"

"The sign in .the window says you i

want a waitress and I'd like to have the job." : ? ', f. I "Have you had any experience? Do you think you are able to carry, without accident, heavy trays of food, people moving all around you and sontetimes jostling you? Can you be courteous under -" "Gee, mister," interrupted Anne, "I've been eatin' in cafeterias for the last three years. SIR GORDON HEW ATT Sir Gordon Hewatt, former British attorney general, is slated to become the next chief justice of Great Britain, according to tne latest political

gossip from London. Hewatt resigned the attorney gen

eralship, London says, to accept the higher appointment. Premier Lloyd George is said to have offered him the appointment a year ago, and it is assumed that the retiring

lord chief justice ' was asked to make way for Hewatt be

fore, perchance, Lloyd George goes. Hewatt is a Coalition-Liberal and a Conservative premier succeeding Lloyd George would naturally award the post to someone in his own party should it -fall vacant then. For this reason the resignation of

Hewatt to pave the way for his appointment is taken as one of the chief indications of the seriousness of the British cabinet crisis.

As attorney general, Hewatt prepared the case against the former kaiser for war crimes, but the trial has never come up. Sir Gordon is 52. He was called to the bar in 1902 and entered parliament

it years later. He became solicitor general in 1916. He has been succeeded by Sir Ernest Pollock.

Musings for the Evening Says a report from the Yank training camp: "Ruth went up on the lot.

and broke in a brand new yellow first baseman's glove." If there is anything we are against in baseball it is a yellow first baseman. New York member would cut houss of representatives in half. But, it would be difficult to decide which half to throw away. ,

If Will Hays can keep people frcm walking on our feet in the movie theatres we will say he has earned that $150,000 a year. . Lloyd George and Poincaire, in conference, "settled eight questions in one hundred minutes." That is nothing. At the breakfast table the ordinary family settles one hundred questions in eight minutes.

No. 126. The Mysterious Penny.

Twelve pennies are shown and give to some one to hold. Reaching beneath the table, a penny Is brought out, and the spectator finds he has only eleven. The trick Is done as follows : count the pennies one at a time on to the left hand. Then pick them up with the right fingers, but leave one penny In the left band, which closes over the coin. A spectator Is told to hold out hli hand, and the right hand drops them oae at a time, but counts them backward thus "12. 11, 10, 9, 8, 7 and five (dropping the five remaining coins) Is twelve I" In reality the spectator holds only eleven coins, but if they are counted boldly as .described aboye, he will think he holds twelve. Hie left hand- then produces Its coin, and the spectator, counting his pile, finds that one has gone. CowrioM, 19ft, by Public Ltdgtr Compon

THE BOOSTERS Along the well-known western coast the golden climate is men's boast. "Come here," they cry, with outstretched hands, "ye weatherworn of other lands! Come here where spring for

ever dwells, and every breeze is wearing bells, where winter's cold and summer's heat are goods you are not apt to meet, where azure skies above us bend, and human comfort has no end!" And now along this shining shore, for many weeks, and many more, a wet and weary rain has poured, and snow has swept, and gales have roared; and when a man steps down the street a

cloudburst lifts him off his feet, and drags him through a yellow flood, and

slams him in a bank of mud. "And now," me thought, "the booster gents will surely feel like fourteen cents; all chilled by frost and soaked by rain,
