PERSIA'S YOUNG SHAH BELIEVES HE IS POET, REPORTS INDICATE LONDON", March 1 The young shah of Persia who recently left his capital, Teheran, for another trip to Europe, i3 said to hold a high opinion of himself -as a poet. In fact, according to a story told here ,he puts himself In a class with Omar Khayyam and con
siders , himself, it anything, a trifle better than his countryman. As the story is told by the Morning Post, a British minister at Teheran called on the shah at the request of English admirers of the great Persian poet and asked that better care be taken of his grave at Nishapur, wheie, as Omar predicted, "the north wind still scatters roses on his tomb." Bui he Shah could not be impressed with this need. Persia, he declared, had lots of poets, and he, himself, was. possibly, a little . better poet than Omar. . . Ahmed Mirza, Shah of Persia, is only 24 years old and this, some sa, may account for his opinion. He knows English and Russian and talks French fluently and accurately, and has been reported as eager to learn western ways and institutions. -Interested In Sports. In appearance his majesty Is short and stout. He takes a lively Interest in sports, plays a good lawn tennis gams, and in order to encourage open air sports In Persia, founded the Imperial Sports club at Teheran, placing at its disposal a piece of crown land. His father, Mahomed AH,, lost hij throne in consequence of his attempts
to stamp out the constitutional system in Persia, and regain the absolutism of his ancestors. Ahmed, who was then In his twelfth year, was proclaimed sovereign in 1909, and his father was sent lnt oexile on the famous island of Prinkipo, where President Wilson proposed that the Allies hold a conference with the Russians, as a part of the after war peace negotiations. " He has been credited with having kept Persia from taking the side of the Central powers in the world war.

Objects to Depositions In Third Arbnckle Trial (By Associated Press?
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 1.
Milton T. O'Ren, assistant district attorney, formally objected in superior court yesterday to the appointment of a commission to take depositions from five Chicago witnesses for use by the
defense in the third manslaughter trial of Roscoe C. (Fatty) Arbuckle In connection with the death of Miss Vir
ginia Rappe. Mr. O'Ren said he objected to the defense petition on the specific ground that it did not definitely set forth what bearing the depositions would have on the case. The proposed witnesses were five doctors said to have been familiar with certain alleged physical defects of Miss Rappe.
Statistics indicate that married men are more trustworthy than single, men in the ratio of 6 to 1. probably because of their increased sense of responsibility.
WASHINGTON, March 1. The little boye one Bees sitting on the double steps of the rostrum, at the feet cf the vice president in the United States senate chamber, are the senate pages. Bright-faced, cheerful, manly little fellows, they wait daily upon the country's statesmen, Republican and Democrat alike. They are as sharp as a keen steel blade, quick as lightning, ready and willing to "fetch" for tlr north and "tote" for the south, making the most of their term with a wary young eye turned toward the future. These pages have a rather enviable position for small boys, being appointed by the senators for a term of four years at a salary of $2.60 per diem and
a honus. They enter at the age of 12 j and leave at 16, provision being made i by the senate for them to attend night '
school; thus for four years they are in a position to acquire a most intimate knowledge of political economy; oZ being able to study and learn something of the art'of oratory under the best masters; of being acquainted with
the country's statesmen and hearing
their opinions publicly expressed, and
of coming into intimate contact with
public life. Their pastimes and sports fill an important part in their terms; they havo their football eleven and their bassball nine, and last year were the proud and triumphant winners of the silver cup given by Senator McCormick for both those sports in competition with the pages of the house of representatives. At Christmas time it i3 tiie custom of the vice president to give the boys a dinner, which is held with all the dignity of a grown-up function,
there being no end of regular grown
up toasts and lengthy after-dinner speeches given and enjoyed by the participants. When Leland Stanford sat in the senate chamber he presented each boy with a five dollar bill at the Yuletide and a dinner at his homo
followed by a performance given by; hired talent to entertain his little guests. As a parting souvenir of sucli j evenings, a gift of cuff buttons or! some other small article designed to delight the heart of the growing youth, is' presented to each page. In spring, when the outdoors is calling, the circus comes to town. A senator always provides the tickets and the pink lemonade for all of the pages, and there is a happy expedition to the "big top.-' All Collect Signatures. Nearly every one of the pages treasures an autograph album. These contain nearly, if not all, of the signatures of the great men of the present day in official life. . The favorite pastime Is a mock session of the senate, when the pages are allowed the use of the senate chamber on days when the senate is not meeting, and sometimes in the mornings of meeting days. The most important legislation ever brought before this
body of junior solons is a bill to write into the statutes provision for increasing the salaries of the senate pages many fold. - One page presides in the vice president's chair, and the session is carried on in a serious way. Visitors who drift into the galleries during these sessions invariably are so interested that they will stay to the close, astonished at the oratorical gifts displayed by some of the lads. While this is only an amusement to the boys, they are gathering a pres
ence and address certain to serve them well in the future. There are in all 23 senate pages 16 "regulars," five "temporaries" and two for the telephones. Their duties in the mornings before the senate meets, consist of tasks that are light, varied and divided. Some boys are assigned to duties at the beginning of the session and do not change their tasks. There must be a copy of every bill, report and document on each desk daily, a file of the congressional record
and of all bills and reports of committees. One page attends to the pens, holders and ink; one sees to it that
the desk of the vice president is in
order and that his gavel is ready to call the senators to order. Another
has the curious duty of iseetng to u
that the sand bottles are filled tor the senate In Its official capacity has not progressed to the modern blotter. This same boy fills the ancient snuff
boxes at each side of the chamber a j
curious -old custom still adhered to by the upper body of congress. Custodians of Electoral Votes To two of these boys is given the honor and duty of carrying the two boxes which contain the electoral votes from the senate chamber to the house of representatives, marching with the senators to the south wing of the capitol. Other duties cover the distribution of supplies in the chamber and the cloak rooms. I When the senate meets, the pages sit in a row on the rostrum steps, half on the Republican side and half on the Democratic side, ready to serve the statesmen, who call them by snapping their fingers. They take bills to the desk, announce visitors, and run the errands for the senators. .The pages come from all over the country and from various stations ot
life. Others come direct from the farm. They come from the north, the south, the west. Many of them help to support widowed mothers and
L younger brothers and sisters.
The Future of the Page These pages go from the senate to West Point, to Annapolis, into banks, mercantile houses, politics, medicine, law, letters and art. They have become successes in every walk of life. One little boy who sat eager-eyed on the rostrum steps many years ago returned to the chamber as Senator A. V. Gorman. Another lad became chief engineer of the army. Stanton Kalk, credited with being the first American naval officer to lose his life in the World war", was once a senate page, Lately a vessel was named in his honor. David Barry, now sergeant-at-arms of the senate, formerly the Washington correspondent of the New York Sun and the Providence Journal, and Assistant Doorkeeper Carl D. Leoffler, who has charge of the pages,
each served his term on errands for
the nation. So did Stuart Robson, the actor. On one occasion when Mr. Robson was playing in Washington, the

men In charge who watch over them and Instruct them In their duties. They enter upon their four year term as pageB when at a receptive age. Their life becomes Interesting. Continually hearing high class discussion of the situation of the nation and its needs, they cannot avoid absorbing a knowledge that may carry 'them. far. This 6ide of their lives gives them an experience which is an education in Itself.
