The Middle Ground By MARION RUBINCAM -
HEART ACHE Chapter 94 By her curious combination of real innocence and surface wisdom and sophistication. Amy had won the admiration of a great many men and the love of Adam Arnold or at least nough of his love to make him want her for his wife. She had already an amazing knowledge of the world and its waysand a certain cynicism which seemed to have been born in her. No one ever called her a "little country girl." she picked up too easily . the ways of Claire and her friends. But this knowledge which enabled her to deal with most situations, left her completely when she came to the one most important crisis sne naa ever faced the final parting with Dick. For it was final. Dick stood there before the arm chair his hat lay on the desk near the door. She parried for time. "I want to know more about It." she kept her voice conversational and interested. "When do you leave for South America?" South America! She pictured Dick on the long mountain journey Jane had described, and she saw him in corduroy breeches and puttees, walking ahead of a long pack train of gray rnules. tied along an Immensely lengthy rope, and piled to a ridiculous degree with boxes and bales. ..r L ,7" 'T " .""v, r..n winding througn overhanging trees, . r f." 1Z' .,l with looped creepers and scarlet nd green birds that screamed in the! ? ok ;.. -onthiTxrt i.va m sli ao CVi a rr i-i rod ovorvth m T nine had described it bJ put Dick in as a central and heroic figure. "The Arapa sails on fa id. "She takes a long time and mop3 at half a dozen ports to take en and discharge cargo. I may go on her." He ran over a list, of names with familiarity. Amy was too miserable to catch any of them or care. Dick was still standing, still on the verge of going out of her life forever. "But you're going so so casually,' he eaid finally. "As though you didn't c arc I mean as though y6u were just running out of town for a weekend." Now Amy was highly romantic, and tcally very young. She was sincerely quite miserable, yet sbe was miserable almost as much because Dick was going away without any heroics, aunt? wik v, w Heart Problems Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a girl j who is sixteen. 1 am taller for my" age than should be and so I am usually taken for seventeen or eighteen. as she was over the ending of their youthful romance.' Amy wanted to picture herself with a broken heart, at least as breaking Dick's heart. She wanted a teat scene out of this much as she read in novels or. saw upon the stage. It was the eternal feminine dramatising Itself. This strange instinct tor making oneself the heroine of a romance exists in so many women that often they confuse the real tragedy with the imaginary one of their minds.
mis Helps to explain Amy's disappointment over Dick's quiet and un ceremonious way of saying goodbye. "It's good goodbye for always, I suppose," she ventured. Dick looked at her quietly for a long time. "I suppose it is," he agreed. "At least it's goodbye until I can meet you again without any feeling except that you are a nice old friend." This was balm to her heart and her romantic soul. "L'm so sorry, Dick. I'm so sorry I'm making you feel so badly. I can't help it. I'm just a selfish beast. I have to have all the good things and all the expensive things out of life to be happy, and I'd never do for a nice boy like yourself." This was the speech she had rehearsed not given as dramatically as she thought or Eaid as well as she planned it when she went 'over The sentences in her mind and re-arranged the words more effectively. But I believe now all you say of yourself." Telling someone else she was self ish was one thing, being agreed with was quite another. Instinctively Amy Fought to justify herself. The words that came as defense only seemed to condemn her the more. She was si lent. And she rose too. "Will you kiss me goodbye for friendship's sake?" she asked timidly, knowing it was wrong. "Do you think I'm saint enough to ; refuse that?" Dick asked, and threw I his arms around her, holding her so I tight she could not get her breath. "You little fiend, do von want tn make it worse for me to go away from you? 1 don't care: I'll take all you can give me, as long as I want it." His words and his faianner were reckless, his arms made her helpless and his kisses only stirred her to cling the tighter to him. Then in a moment he was gone. . - And Amy knew the poignant meaning of the word "alone." Tomorrow "A Confession.".
