OF BUSINESS BODY

(By Associated Press) ST. LOUIS. Mo., Feb. 21. Advertising abuses and their correction was the subject of several addresses made here today before the opening session of the mid winter meeting of the National Better Business Commission.

The session will continue through Friday. I

Campaigns in the newspapers against "wreckers" or sales organizations that "foist illegitimate sales" on tho public have proved successful in Washington. D. C. F. X. Wholley,

manager of the Washington Bureau of j

the Commission declared. "Fire sales, going out of business sales, closing out and reorganization sales are fast becoming a thing of the past," he said.

."except where a legitimate merchant is making a proper sale. The bureau i has been greatly assisted by the!

Washington papers which have shown an absolute determination to protect the confidence of the reading public." Kenneth Barnard of Toledo, Ohio, emphasized the importance of the "Truth-in-Advertising" statutes and urged the various commissions to familiarize judges and prosecuting attorneys with such statutes as might be invoked in enforcing the aims of the organization. The Toledo man said that prosecution should be resorted to only in rare cases, it being better, he said, "to work constructively, except in cases where the facts warrant legal actions." Fraud in the advertising of fur and imitation fur garments is being reduced greatly through the agency of the commission, according to E. J. Urennan, manager-counsel of the St. l-ouis bureau. A pelt, such as a seal, he said, is sometimes imitated and

0"some advertisers fail to tell the pub-j Ac what the fur is made of." The day of the "paper" shoe that "masquer-,

ttaes under the cloak of all leather," Mr. Brennan added, is disappearing as the Truth-in-Advertising campaign spreads.

DISCUSS REDUCTION OF FARM VALUATIONS AT FARM SESSION

NEWCASTLE, Ind., Feb. 21. Reduction of farm land valuation by 23 per cent and abolition of the state tax commission and of the public service commission, were measures presented for action by the resolution committer at the district farm bureau meeting Monday. Opposition to the teachers' minimum wage law and soldiers' bonus at the present time was registered also, but aid pledged to all soldiers who need care. Members of the resolution committee included W. G. Smith and .1. Johnson of Henry county, Everett Hunt of Wayne, William l!osson of Marion and Messrs. Clevenger, Jones, Ludwick and Allender. Reports on membership drives in the counties represented were encouraging, Wayne county having the best

report with a substantial increase at the beginning of the year. John Driscoll of Union county spoke on United States Grain Growers' membership and Mis. Lillian Pierce spoke on her work in organizing women as active members of the federation. The plans of the Indianapolis co-operative live stock commission firm and ihe national live stock selling plans were explained by W. H. Settle. Every county, was represcnted by three or more members at the meeting, which Carl Crawford of Milton presided over as president.
