The Middle Ground By MARION RUBINCAM
1 THE CAMP. Chapter 81. They reached the)camp that week it went by the original name of Camo AJax, named for the company that had planted this mushroom . growth of town on the mountains. Jane's first impression was of ma chinery of great pumps and drills and gigantic gravel sifters, of sluices and tanks and lengths of steel railway track, of a wooden tower that reached enormous heights into the air and emitted gurgling noises on a gigantic scale. A small railway engine, sti1! boxed "with wood, stood' in the middlt of what was to be a street, masons were making stonework around a holo shoved into the mountain and buttressed now with wood. ' "What a curious humming," she remarked to her companion the woman ?he had traveled beside for days. "The power house that's probably it where they are building the stone walls." Jane looked the stone walls were ;n the process of building", the wooden roof already on; a great dynamo, recently set up was being, tested. AI around were wooden shacks, some finished, most being put up. It was ugly beyond words yet fascinating, unreal, for the mountains that ran out below them, still climbed above to unguessed heights, and. cradled this hamlet in a soft little fold in its side. The mountain was blue and gray an-1 sreen and brown in patches, and an impressionist painter would have found iolet shadows and red tints in brown stones, and perhaps even beauty and color in the squared " off wooden shacks. Already hundreds lived here hundreds were to come. Dr. Moore's iiouse "was ready a company offcer took them to it It was a little larger than the rest, and the bit of space in front that might be a yard was clu.lered with sawed off bits of lumber. Within was one room for his office Ihe operating table, steel medical cabinet and other things he had specified were piled in any way beyond was a bedroom, not much larger than the double bed that was obviously ordered from a mail order house, back of that a kitchen and a small storage room. "The native women make good servants when you train them. We will build on a living room sometime," the young officer said. That was all the advice and the only word of cheer they had. Thoy looked , around there was nothing not a sheet, nor a cooking utensil, nothing but some piecs of furniture nnd the medical equipment still to be mpacked. Donald said something under hid breath. Jane sat down, because, all of a sudden the strength went out of her. Years here like this years not that she would mind, she would live anywhere and be happy if Don aid was. But Donald would hate this nlace. hated it already. Jane, the Strong minded, suddenly wanted to crv. But Jane hated tears. She would never have forgiven herself for this teminine weakness. And there was Donald, his face as black as a thundercloud. One of them had to put up a cheerful front as usual, it would have to be the woman Besides there was Jim, and Jim ? wife who had done this sort of thins for 25 years. A handsome young chap in the wreck of what had been a tan whipcord riding suit came hurrying up. "This is Dr. Moore?" He spoke with a strong foreign accent, he looked Spanish or Portuguese. "We have been wanting you badly. There are a couple of cases in the hospital--I have been doing all I could for thj last week sorry to rush you not tc give you a moment to breathe." He (poke in jerky little half-finished sentences. Donald's face cleared. Something lo do! He opened the trunk tha thad the emergency kit, and wa ready, the oung Spaniard apologizing to Jan-, lor taking him away. Jane was relieved. She saw that ss long as Donald bad something to keep him busy, he would be happy. She began to attack her own problem Heart Problems Dear Mrs. Thompson: 1 am a boy nf nineteen and am in love with a verv sweet giii of eighteen. and feeling perfectly helpless, she thought first of her competent new friend. "What shall I do? It is perfectly awful I feel so lost,' she said, when she had found the woman she wanted. Mrs., Straker laughed easily. "Whyj this camp Is fixed up fine. You should see some of the places I have been in. Here, I'll send Jim to eat in the engineer s mess, and I will get you fixed." Jane thought -she did it by magic. She seemed to know instinctively by the size of 'the building what sh3 could get In it. There was a supply house, from which everything from sheets and frying pan3 to groceries and canned meats appeared. There were papers to be signed each family had a certain allotment. Jane found that Mrs. Straker could nearly furnish her house for her thai afternoon. But Jane, apparently, was to be a housewife here and nothing else. Tomorrow New Problems.

Roman Pear Was Brought Into England by Soldiers When the soldiers of Julius Caesar Introduced the pear tree into Britain, they unwittingly prepared the way for one of the rarest delicacies of the canning and preserving season. For although the thorny sprouts of Roman times with their small, hard, inedible fruit gave no promise of what they might bear when grafted on quince and mountain ash, the pear took quickly to domestication and won with ease its place in the world's orchard. There is no fruit with quite the same delicate flavor as the pear. And it has a distinctive aroma which no other preserved iruit can supply. The Bartlett, the variety almost univers ally used for canning, has not only ; the flavor and aroma of the other va MRS. 'JpHE price of wheat is lower this year, so the price of Valier's Enterprise Flour is lower. It will never cost the same as ordinary flour because we can't make Enterprise from ordinary wheat.. We must have fine, strong-gluten hard wheat and this year it is very scarce. The premium wre pay to get it is your insurance against failure. But isn't a few cents a sack r-:tra cheap insurance?
P. S. Valier's Enterprise Flour haa concentrated strength. Eight or even less cups of Enterprise go as far aa nine of ordinary flour. Use less flour when you bake with Enterprise.
