CIVIL WAR MYSTERY IS CLEARED UP BY DR.C.J.MENDFNHALL

Dr. C. J. Mendenhall, in a communication to an Indianapolis newspaper, cleans up a mystery regarding a Richmond man who is supposed to hava disappeared in a cellar during the civil war days. His leter follows: . I read your Historic Landmarks. In it you spoke of "the man who disair neared,' also "midnight In the cellar." N'ow, regarding the man who disappeared and has never been accounted for, I can give you full and reliable information. His name was, Parker Coffin. He was born in Wayne county and was of a highly respectable family. His father and mother, previous to moving to the north, were from the southern states, and were Quakers and descendants of Tristram Coffin, the first Coffin who came to America (in 1G42) and also was governor of and owner of one-fourth of N'antucket. His ancestors married in the nobility,' some of them marrying Granddaughters of William the Conqueror or Henry I and Edward I. Parker Coffin, the subject of this article, was a nephew of the late Barnabas Coffin, founder of the Coffin & Fletcher pork packers of your city; ilso first cousin of the late David W. Coffin,' also of your city. This man who lisappeared. (Parker Coffin) when a voting man went south and married a wealthy southerner who possessed a large plantation and owned many fclaves. During the war, when their laves were set free and everything seemed chaos, he moved his family to this city (Richmond) and lived at 0fi North Ninth steet. Aids Governor. In the meantime, having financial interests in the south, and his family here in the north., gave him an opTtortunity of going back and forth with, nut suspicion. Governor Morton, knowing him 1o be; the man for the hour in our troubled condition here in Indiana, secured his services to fervpt out the workings of the Knights i'f the Golden Circle, which he did successfully, and saved the country. Now what became of this Parker Coffin and the man buried in Judge Martindale's cellar? I will tell you actly. Instead of being killed by ho Knights of the Golden Circle, Governor Morton got him over to Canada, lie remained there until the war was over and things had settled down. Then he returned to the United States rnd purchased a hotel in Peru, Ind., Jind was very successful. He had bus. iness that carried him to New York, und arriving there found himself ift the midst of an epidemic of cholera. Jle returned at once and died the next day after reaching his homw. lie was buried in Peru and not in the Indianapolis cellar. ; He was my first cousin, and I remember him as a boy, and what others said of him. He was a man of fine personal appearance, a typical southern gentleman, very polished in his manners, and a fine conversationalist. In itaose days conservative people would call such a man a high stepper, but in

this day of progress we would call

lihn a good liver. 1 write you this so that the people of Indianapolis will know what became of the man who aided Governor Morton in saving the country. DR. J. C. MENDENHALL.

Original Star-Spangled !

Banner in Washington One of the large flags of Washing

ton, perhaps the largest, and a flag most closely and affectionately associated with, our national history, is the original Star-Spangled Banner. It

is inclosed in a monster glass frame and occupies a long section of the west wall of the Hall of American History in the old National Museum

building. Its stripes are about two feet wide and the stars are as large

as a lady's picture hat.

In the descriptive matter relating

to this flag its dimensions are not given. The bunting is much worn,

and rents and holes are visible in

numbers of places. It was the Ft. McHenry flag of September, 1814, the

flag which Francis Scott Key saw and

which inspired the words of the ' Star

Spangled Banner."

PLEASES BRAZILIAN NATIVES It would not be supposed that the

natives of Brazil would be greatly con

cerned by the prohibition laws of this country, but they are immensely pleas

ed. This is explained .that it means that we will drink more coffee, and our coffee all comes from Brazil.

BABY'S FIRST WORD It is commonly believed that a baby,

when growing up and learning to talk,

speaks the word ma and da through constantly hearing these uttered by others. This idea, however,

is 'upset by certain students or languages, who advance a totally different theory. In most languages, "ma" is generally the first syllable spoken by a child. It is the root of the word "mother." As a baby opens its mouth and then exhales breath it i3 quite possible that it makes this exclamation unconsciouslyi Some .people believe that there is no such thing as a "natural" tongue to

the world; for, they bay, if all babies over one year old were caused to be

come deaf and dumb, they would be obliged to go through the identical slow, process of inventing and evolving a tongue as man was compelled to do in days gone by.
