essay on Compensation reinterpreted a funda
mental law of the universe with such clarity ot expression and depth of understanding, as to place him for all time in the ranks of the great sag.es of mankind. Most Americans of understanding, subscribe in varying degrees to the Emersonian doctrine that you can't get something for nothing, for that is the substance of the great philosopher's definition of the law of compensation. All Americans would better their material and spiritual conditions were they to study this essay and take its truths to their hearts to give guidance to all their thoughts and actions. Just an intimation of this master's grasp of fundamentals and ability to interpret them clearly is afforded by the following excerpts from the essay on Compensation: "Polarity, or action and reaction, we meet in every part of nature; in darkness and light, in heat and cold ; in the ebb and flow of waters ; in male and female. An inevitable dualism bisects nature, so that each thing is a half and suggests another thing to make it whole ; as, spirit, matter ; man, woman; in,out; motion, rest. "Whilst the world is thus dual, so is every ono of its parts. In the animal kingdom the physiologist has observed that a surplusage given to' one part is paid out of a reduction from another part of the same creature. If the head and neck are enlarged, the trunk and extremities are cut short. "The theory of the mechanic forces is another example. What we gain in power is lost in time, and the converse. The influences of climate and soil in political history are another. The cold climate invigorates. The barren soil does not breed fevers. "The same dualism underlies the nature and condition of man. Every excess causes a defect ; every defect an excess. Every faculty which is a receiver of pleasure has an equal penalty put on its abuse. It is to answer for its moderation with its life.

The end pre-exists in the means, thej fruit in the seed. j "The ingenuity of man has been dedicated to; the solution of one problem how to detach thei sensual sweet, the - sensual strong, the sensual j bright, etc., from the moral sweet, the moral j deep, the moral fair. The soul says, Eat ; the body j would feast. The soul says, The man and woman j shall be one flesh and one soul ; the body would 1 join the flesh only. The soul says, Have domin-!

"This Law writes the laws of the cities and nations. It will' not be baulked of its end in the smallest iota. It is in vain to build or plot or combine against it. Things refuse to be mismanaged long. Though no checks to a new evil appear, the checks exist, and will appear. If the government is cruel, the governor's 'life is not safe. If you tax too high, the revenue will yield nothing. If you make the criminal code sanguinary, juries will not convict. Under all governments the influence of character remains the same in Turkey and New England about alike. "These appearances indicate the fact that the universe is represented in every one of its particles. Everything in nature contains all the powers of nature. The true doctrine of omnipresence is that God reappears with all His parts in every moss and cobweb. The value of the universe contrives to throw itself into every part. If the good is there, so is the evil ; if the affinity, so the repulsion ; if the force, so the limitation. Thus is the universe alive. All things are moral. That soul which within us is a sentiment, outside of us is a law. "Every act rewards itself. Crime and punishment grow out of one stem. Punishment is a fruit that unsuspected ripens within the flower of the pleasure which concealed it. Cause and effect, means and ends, seed and fruit, cannot be

"Proverbs are the sanctuary of the Intuitions. Give, and it shall be given you. Thou shalt be paid exactly for what thou hast done, no more, no less. Harm watch, harm catch. Curses always recoil on the head of him who imprecates them. If you put a chain around the neck of a slave, the other end fastens itself around your own. Bad counsel confounds the adviser. It is thus written, because it is thus in life. "A man cannot speak but he judges himself. With his will or against his will he draws his portrait to the eye of his companions by every word. "You cannot do wrong without suffering wrong. All infractions of love and equity in our social relations are speedily punished. They are punished by Fear. Fear is an instructor of great sagacity and the herald of all revolutions. He indicates great WTongs which must be revised. "A wise man will extend this lesson to all parts of life. Always pay ; for first or last you must pay your entire debt. Persons and events may stand for a time between you and justice, but it is only a postponement. You must pay at last your own debt. Benefit is the end of nature. He is great who confers the most benefits. He is base and that is the one base thing in the unii r 1 1

"The law of nature is, Do the thing, and yon shall have the power; but they who do not the thing have not the power. Everywhere and always this law is sublime. The absolute balance of Give and Take. The doctrine that everything has its price, and if that price is not paid, not that thing but something else is obtained. "Men suffer all their life long under the foolish superstition that they can be cheated. But it is as impossible for a man to be cheated by anyone but himself, as for a thing to be and not to te at the same time. "There is no penalty to virtue ; no penalty to wisdom; they are proper additions of being. In a virtuous action I properly am ; in a virtuous act I add to the world. There can be no excess to love, none to knowledge, none to beauty, when these attributes are considered in the purest sense. The soul refuses all limits. Man's life is a progress and not a station. TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It," "Up" FEELINGS Feelings are frailer than the most delicate china. Every time you hurt somebody's feelings you leave an ineffaceable scar. . It is better to be kind than to be great but it Is good to be both. And not injuring the feelings of others helps a long,, long way toward happiness. , , I know there are those who think that one Is not made of stern stuff if he lets his feelings get hurt but I have never yet met anyone who liked to have his feelings hurt. Have you? The jewel of civilization is to be thoughtful of the other fellow. The cruel World war that has left such a terrible aftermath, came about wholly because too many people wanted what someone else had. I am always amused at the demand of some fellow, for his "rights." Rights! The only rights that should seriously concern any of us are the rights of others. Our own rights will take care of themselves in due time. No man in history was ever more sorely tried because of his humility and forbearance than Lincoln. Hardly a member of his closest group of advisers but went out of his way to hurt the feelings of this patient man. Look at the deeply lined face for evidence. And no character in history ever came out into the light of the accumulating years with such strength and beauty. I looked today upon the great statue of Lincoln by St. Gaudens, which stands in Lincoln Park. Chicago. One seems to see written over the whole attitude of that wonderful likeness "With charity for all, and malice toward none!" Before you hurt another's feelings think. It is well to keep reversing our thoughts, putting ourselves in the place of others. "There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bunyan," exclaimed the writer of Pilgrim's Progress, as he pointed to a man reeling in drunkenness. We are all born in frailty, each with his weak points. Let us remember that we all belong to the same human family and be kind.

chief regret in life is that he hasn't had -more millions to give away. Straus founded the first infant milk depot in New York in'1893. In 1920 there were 297 such depots in that city. Mr. Straus is in the best of health and very active. He retired from business seven vears ago, but he
is in close toucn with the numerous charities in which he is interested and personally investigates many individual cases which come to his attention. The career of Straus is an object lesson to every struggling young man in America. Harry's mother asked him, after his first day at school. "You look so pleased that I'm sure you did well." "No. I couldn't spell much of anything," admitted Harry, "and I could not remember the arithmetic very well, nor the geography." the true, the benevolent, the wise, is more a man and not less, than the fool and knave. There is therefore no fax on the good of virtue, for that is the incoming of God Himself. "There is no tax on the knowledge that compensation exists. Herein I rejoice with a serene eternal peace. I learn the wisdom of St. Bernard : 'Nothing can work me damage except myself; the harm that I sustain I carry about with me, and never am a real sufferer, but by my own fault.' " Emerson, then, believed with Jesus that man for evil or good, reaps what he sows from the thoughts of his heart, that each man and woman, every nation, merits according to destiny. Shakespeare's words apply well to Emerson. "He is a great observer, and he looks quite through the deeds of men."
