The Middle Ground By MARION RUBINCAM
to do? Would he be silent and sullen? Would he, perhaps, be glad to see them? He was none of these things. When they reached the house the front was dark and forbidding. Luther struck matches, finding the lamp on the hall table. They went back to the kitchen, where a woman from the nearby village welcomed them confusedly and said she would make some tea at once. Jordan came in. He greeted them with a nod, hanging up hi cap on the peg by the kitchen door. '"The little mare's ill, and I've been looking after her," he said, by way of explaining his absence. "I've got Mrs. Thomas In to help since my housekeeper's sick and my family go off to live in the city." "Well, you might express a little enthusiasm at the sight of your long lost family, I think," Amy's voice matched her father's for sarcasm. ' It's not very pleasant coming back here anyway, and you aren't trying much to improve it." Luther saved the situation. "Glad to see you, father." he said, forcibly shaking hands. "Mother, let Mrs. Thomas go' home and well cook our own dinner." Tomorrow A Strange Horns.
Heart Problems
A CONSPIRACY Mrs. Talbot felt that if she could once separate Amy from the daily contact with the people she knew in the city, that, aa ehe expressed it, "something might be done with her." She was not particularly hopeful, she felt she had succeeded in settling Jane's affair, but was not likely to in the case of Luther or Amy. But ia was a chance! And then there was another idea w hlch led her to send a note to Dick, asking him to see her next day when Amy was not there. Dick came plainly worried, thinking Mrs. Talbot had bad news for him. Worry eat badly on his chubby features. Dick's face was the sort that hould be smiling always, hi earnest, sleepy green eyes squinting a little as he smiled. Dick and all his type often carry aching hearts under a phlegmatic exterior and no one credits them with emotionalism. "Luther's vacation starts Monday," she began abruptly, "and we're going back to the farm for three weeks. Amy's going too I think you'd better take your vacation now and be there at the same time." Dick never said "can't" at least no one had ever heard him. He was always good-naturedly willing to try. He saw the advantage also of being with Amy when he had a clear field. ' "l only get a week, and that's in late September," he said, "but I'll manage it if I have to resign." And he did though he only "managed" two weeks of it, and that by buying another man's vacation from liim wiring to his father for enough money to bribe the other man to do away with his two week's rest. Then, :-omehow, he persuaded his firm to allow the transfer of vacations to the amusement of his chief, when he calmly confessed he wanted the time to woo a girl. The family arrived in at Hornbrook on the usual train, which, as usual, was
half ar. hour or more behind schedule!
The familiar hired man and the familiar team of horses was waiting il.e man confessing sheepishly he was rather of a boy, born the night before. "I feel almost as though Id never ieen away," Mrs. Talbot said to Luthr, as they started along the long road home. "Vet it's ben almost a year since I left more than a year since Amy left." "I don't feel as though I'd ever been '"ay." Amy flung back from the front f.fitt. where she rode with the driver. "Think of all that's hapened this last year!" Luther was silent thinking of juit this. In that year Claire had left him. and now wanted to make the separation
eternal. Luther looked back on bisi life, as something past and over a j book that was finished. There was i nothing ahead that made him want to! look forward only work, since hej must make money to live, and mut. ! see his young sister over the little!

FINE EXPRESS WORKER FOR EMBEZZLEMENT; SENTENCE SUSPENDED
FROM PRODUCER
James Bryant, American Express : company worker, was fined $3 and costs and given a six months sentence to ' the penal farm in circuit court Thursday morning. The sentence was suspended. Bryant had pleaded guilty to a charge of embezzlement of the company funds. A check for $12.50 was the basis of the charge. j Bryant, who has a wife and three children, has enjoyed an excellent , reputation up to the present time. The court delivered a lecture to Bry-; ant when passing sentence. "It is most unfortunate that you j should so far forget your duty to your-; self and your employer as to take this money," said the court. "After , having this- matter under consideration j for some time, I have reached the conclusion on account of your past repu tation that you are not a criminal at ', heart. I believe you are entitled to , leniency. "The court therefore suspends your sentence during good behavior. You must learn to live within your means, and provide for your family honestly ' You are a young man yet, and have . a good part of your life before you." j

Why Enterprise Flour is so economical 1GVIGHT or even less cups of Valier's Enterprise Flour 'go as far as nine cups of ordinary flour. Enterprise is milled from nothing but the creamy white centers of the choicest strong gluten hard wheat. Its strength is concentrated.
It u hard to get wheat good enough for Enterprise this year. Bad weather conditions damaged much of the crop. A lot of it is weevily and musty. About one car in a hundred coming to market today is prime wheat in good condition. We must pay a big premium to get this choice wheat, but we will use no other. We
know th?t good cooks would rather pay a few ,cents extra a sack to get flour that they can depend upon. If you have been having baking troubles try Enterprise. You will delight in the fine baking it produces. Your grocer carries Enterprise ask him for a sack it costs much less than it did last year.
