ft BOOTLEGGERS EVADE LAW BY RECTIFYING DENATURED ALCOHOL

(Hy Associated Press) WASHINGTON. Feb. 2 Bootleggers throughout the country are evolving a new industry the rectification of denatured alcohol prohibition officials said today, which probably will necessitate a complete revision of the government's system of distribution. Reports have been received, it was

said that some of the government formulas for industrial alcohol lend themselves readily to rectification so that illicit liquor dealers are obtaining the denatured spirits under government permits and by various processes rendering it more or less drinkable. Unusually large quantities of Industrial alcohol, officials declared have been withdrawn in some localities ostensibly for use in the manufacture of barber's supplies and toilet preparations but after being subjected to chemical processes have found their way into the channels of the bootleg traffic. Consider Revision. Revision of the present permit system now in vogue is understood to be under consideration with a view to checking any diversion of denatured alcohol into unlawful hands. Prohibition officials throughout the country Hre said to have been asked their opinions of the workings of the present permit system in the light of law enforcement and are expected to submit

to headquarters their suggestions for

combating the industrial alcohol angle of the bootleg problem.

There have been some suggestions ii is understood of shortening the life of the existing ninety day permits for 1 ho handling of industrial alcohol and of more rigid regulations governing the establishments to which permits would bo issued.

2 252 TODAY

"We have with us today the mystic figures, 2-2-22" said a Richmond business men Thursday, "and the translation means simply that this Is the 2d day of the 2d month of the year 1922. The peculiarity is that these combinations come but once every eleven years. In 1933, on March 3, we may write it: 3-3-33."

STRONG COMPETITION FORECAST FOR CORN, FOOD SHOW, FEB. 20-1 Strong competition is forecast in the Richmond corn show and domestic science show to be held in connection with the short course in the Coliseum Feb. 20 and 21. Several townships already have plans on foot to capture the sweepstakes for their communities, while many individuals had planned even before being approached by their township 'Committees, to enter one or several of the classes. Boston ana Center townships are two that are promising a hearty battle in the number and excellence of their

exhibits, pointing to their exhibits at their institutes as evidence of their abilty. Other communties of the county, however, although their cooks

and corn growers have not made as widely advertised a display of their talents, claim to have equal ability within their borders nd expect to surprise some of the less retiring neighborhoods. Encourage Competition Special efforts have been made in compiling the premium lists to encourage competition between boys and girls of school age and it is certain that many concrete examples of the pupils' work in the county schools will be entered. A meeting of the general committee will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in the county agent's office, said Charles Williams, chairman of the show, Tuesday. The men's and women's township committees will attend this meeting, and final arrangements of details for the short course and show will be made then. Completion of the premium list is also on the program for this meeting. Placards advertising the show have been printed and are being distributed over the county, and authorities of the various farmers institutes are being interested in the promotion of the Richmond show. The publicity committee under the direction of J. L. Dolan will also attempt to secure the co-operation of Richmond merchants in special window displays designed to tie up their windows to the short course and show, and to appeal to the county visitors at this two day event.

HEAVY JAMS OF ICE BLOCK NAVIGATION

STOCKHOLM. Feb. 2 Three weeks

of incessant freezing weather have

formed ice in the Baltic sea so thick as to interfere seriously with navigation. Pack ice, often more than 15 feet thick, has been forced into Sweden's eastern harbors, blocking all ports north-of Stockholm. All the Finnish ports also are blockaded.

NAVAL TREATY

(Continued from Page One.) by applause. Balfour then spoke of the British sphere of Weihai-Wei. He said Great Britain had required it as a measure of defense against the Russian and German aggressions in China. He said that reason has now disappeared. Then he announced that Great Britain is gcing to restore Wei-Hal-Wei to China. There was prolonged applause at this. The audience felt very kindly to Balfour. His statement was spectacular evidence, a "crowning word," Mr. Balfour called it, showing how greatly China has been restored by this conference. Japan's action, supplemented by this announcement of Mr. Balfour, has restored to China her most ancient province. Hughes now turns to matter of the naval treaty. He says he will state succinctly the purport of the treaty. When he says that the American plan on capital ships has been maintained, there is applause. He makes a detailed comparison of the plan he gave the world on November 12, with (he treaty as now adopted, showing how

closely the two coincide. As regards capital ships, the variation between Hughes's plan as announced on November 12 and the treaty as adopted today is certainly less than 5 percent. Hughes ended his exposition of the treaty by saying that it Is one of the most extraordinary acts of history. He said in a strong harsh voice, "This treaty ends, absolutely, ends, competition of navies." He said this treaty is extraordinary because it does not talk about limiting armament, but actually limits it. He said it is the greatest step ever

taken in the direction of peace," and the audience applauded heartily. Mr. Sarraut of , the French delegation, followed with a long speech in which he complained, in a fairly convincing way, that the motives of France in preventing a more complete treaty had been misunderstood. It was evident that the French are sensitive about the impression they have made in. America. Mr. Hughes then called on Mr. Root to present the treaty limiting the use of submarines and outlawing gas warfare.

While of Egg Protects the Housewife One of the important reasons for the great success of Calumet lies in the fact that it contains a small amount of white of egg which makes it possible to keep fresh goods on the dealers' shelves at all times. . Baking Powder that does not contain white of egg cannot easily be tested for leavening strength outside of the chemical laboratory. Calumet which

contains a small amount of white of egg can be tested right on the grocer's counter or in the house- , wife's kitchen. That's one reason why Calumet is the biggest selling brand on earth today.
