CAMBRIDGE MAN GETS $100 FINE, 90 DAYS FOR MAKING LIQUOR Jesse Richardson, of Cambridge .City, arrested at 4 o'clock Thursday Jr.fternoon on a charge of violation of ;the liquor laws, entered a plea of j guilty and was flnea $100 and costs, , and given a 90 day sentence on the -penal farm, in police court Friday morning. Richardson had six barrels of mash and a still concealed under a hen house at his home northwest of Cambridge City. When officers called at his home, Thursday, he -was indignant. He asserted that the officers were "picking on him." and it was not until they found the concealed still that he cooled down, police said. Richardson is a woodcarver by trade. .Ho told the officers that it was not necessary for him to make liquor as he sometimes drew as high as $15 per day for his work. During the war, he said, he made $300 per week. Ready to Quit. Report. "I make liquor because the country says I can't do it," is one of the statements attributed to him. After his arrest he said that he was ready to quit now and help make the country dry. Richardson had dug out a room about eight feet square under his henhouse. A trap door inside the building was the only entrance. The trapdoor was covered with a foot of straw. No attempt at defense was made by Attorney Feemster of Cambridge City, when Richardson was arraigned Friday morning. He did, however, make a plea that Richardson be given as
light a punishment as Is consistent
with the law, as he would be hard to replace in the factory where he work
ed at Cambridge City.-Attorney Feem
ster also mentioned Richardson's fam
ily as one of the factors to be considered: Says He Is Lenient
Mayor Handley In passing sentence said: "These men should consider
their families before violating the law. It seems that Richmond is surrounded 1 f , , .

with stills, and the only way to stop the manufacture of liquor is to make the men who are caught with the goods serve their sentences. The fact that this man is an expert wood carver and did not have to make liquor is no argument for .mercy. "I think we are being very lenient in putting the fine at $100 and costs, with a 90 day sentence on the penal farm." Richardson was fined by Newcastle authorities about a year ago, and given a sentence on the penal farm, for bringing liquor into that city. Power of Police Local police officers have power anywhere in the state for the enforcement of Mate laws, and they have power to enforce city ordinances within two miles of the city limits, said Prosecuting Attorney Paul A. Beckett, Friday. "A metropolitan police force has power to go anywhere in the state on a search warrant or a warrant for an arrest," he said. The arrest was made by Chief of Police Eversman, Internal Revenue Officer Manlove, J. W. Henningar and Henry Vogelsong, the latter of the city police force.
FARM POLICY (Continued from Page One.) fellows were holding a meeting, you would go in." This sort of thing is a surprising and genuinely important development. One of the formal proposals made at
the conference .has been for America to loan money to European countries on long-term crediits for the purpose of enabling those countries to buy our
farm products on credit. TMs is im
possible and won't be done, but out
of the feeling which inspired the pro
posal has arisen a growing conviction that the quickest and surest road out of America's agricultural depression is to get away from the policy of isolation which won such complete approval in the election of 1920. Policy Changing There can be no question that there is the beginnings of a trend away from the policy approved at that election. It is not merely in the farm conference that it appears. It is found also
in the modified or completely reversed position of Republican senators and Republican business men. ! There is nothing to the theory that the farm bloc or the American Farm Bureau federation, of which the farm bloc is the political agency, aims to form a third party. On the contrary, their fixed and deliberate policy is the direct opposite. Their slogan is: "Work through both parties." It is
true there are the formal beginnings
of a third party movement in Nebraska and elsewhere in the west, but it has nothing to do with the farm bloc. Other Reasons Also, the leaders of the farm bloc in the senate and house specifically disavow any such intention. There isn't tjie faintest possibility of Kenyon leaving the Republican party. In addition to other reasons for staying within the Republican party, Kenyon would have the selfish reason that just now a good many of the progressive Republicans who in 1920 tried to nominate Hiram Johnson are beginning to talk in terms of Kenyon as the leader of the Progressive wing of the party in 1924.
