MIAMI IS HUMBLED BY QUAKER QUINTET BY 24 TO 22 SCORE Miami university basketball men lost to the Earlham college team at the Coliseum Wednesday night by the close count of 24-22.--. The whirlwind play of both teams was the feature of the game, with the Earlham team carrying the faster end of the play. This was the first defeat of the season for the Miami team.

Score at the end of the first half stood 14-10 with Miami leading. Just before the gun was sounded for the end of the first half, Heater, of Miami, dropped a long chot through from the side of the floor. From tie sound of the first whistle it was evident that a real battle wa5 under way. Davis and Heater scored the first pointa of the game, and with the foul goal shooting of Milders the count stood six to one against the Quakers. The most remarkable thing about the play In the first period was the rally of the Earlham five. Early dope had it that the Miami team would walk all over the more inexperienced Earlham men, but the Quakers showed fight despite the

reputation of the visitors. They emerged from the lower end of the score and garnered 10 points, which put them but four behind their opponents at half time. Townsend Big Meit One man on the Earlham team was doing all he could to keep his team in the running. George Townsend, the lanky center, stepped out in this fray and connected for three field goals in each half. These six goals from fthe field spelled defeat for the Miami five. Townsend was one of the hardest workers on the floor and his uncanny eye, once centered on the basket, was invariably able to find he center of the hoop for the necessary pointa to win. His field goal in the last two minutes of play from the center of the floor furnished the two points which sewed up the "game for Earlham. John Beasley and Jean Goar played high class ball in the guarding department for Earlham, and this pair was always shooting the ball to the for wards to get it down the floor before the Miami team could come back on defense. Hinshaw and Hadley worked hard at the forward positions and exhibited exceptional defensive work. They were slightly off on shots, but made up for it with their fight. Miami Outfought Miami players were not outclassed, by any means, in the fray with Earlham; but they were outfought and that was what beat them in Wednesday's fray. Miami had a fine offense, but their defense was not strong enough to stop trie Quakers.

The Miami team had five men who worked in a unit and they used all five men down the floor on offense. House and Heater, the Miami forwards, worked well together. House connected with four goals from the field and Heater dropped two through. Davis, the Miami guard, broke into the scoring column with two goals, from under the basket. Earlham plays DePauw here on Feb. ?. Reserved seats for this game will be on Bale at the Starr Piano company from Monday until the game. This will be the, feature attraction of the i season. Boston Independents proved no match for the Camera Shop Kewpies in the preliminary game to the MiamiEarlham game at the Coliseum Wednesday night, the Kewpies winning by the score of 34 to 12. The Boston lads seemed to be lost on the large floor of the Coliseum, and could not get the right range on the basket. The Kewpies were the first to score and .were never in danger of losing the lead obtained by the first goal. Boston was outclassed completely, but put up a good fight and never gave the locals a chance for a rest, fighting until the last whistle wa.s blown. , . Although they were "outweighed several pounds to the man, they made tip for the handicap in weight by their speed and the Boston lads were without power to stop it. Sauter played the best offensive game for the Kewpies, making 7 goals from the field. He was closely followed by O. Monger, who connected for o goals from the field. Ballenger lead the scoring for the Boston five, making 8 of the 12 points scored by his team. Samuels, who generally leads the attack of the Boston five, was held without a field goal during the entire game.
