An American as Pope Dispatches from Rome telling of the exist

ence of a strong current favoring the election of an American cardinal as pope arc of surpassing

interest to all Americans irrespective of their religious affiliation. His election as supreme pontiff would be a great compliment to ths Catholics of thi3 country and to the nation as a whole. Ground for the possibility of such action, correspondents say, lies in the pressure which has

been brought to bear upon cardinals to support

certain men who might be favorable to certain 'European countries.

The effort of the nations to win victory for

their own candidates has become so strong that 'one cardinal is quoted as saying: "The only salvation is the choice of an ! American cardinal, born and bred on the Washington doctrine of non-interference."

, Another cardinal is quoted in this morning's

i dispatches as follows:

"The election of an American cardinal seems Ito be the only hapny solution. An American

pope would represent to the world .the same admirable and serene justice which characterizes

American history."

In pointing to America as the only disinterested country in the elevation of a new pope, the

cardinal quoted above is authority for ascribing

the following motives to European countries for their interest: Great Britain wants a pope to placate Ireland. France wants one who will uphold her in her stand against Germany. Italy wants a pope to wipe out. the old feud between the Vatican and the government. Germany seeks a church head to help her escape reparations payments. Austria wants a pope to help her regain her

old prestige. The correspondents of the various news organizations and the Rome papers themselves that are discussing this phase of the forthcoming' conclave may have magnified an issue or thoyj may be badly misinformed. After the first ex- j pressions of sentiment, the participants of the! conclave probably will forget all political consid-j erations and select a candidate who is adequately i trained and fitted for the high spiritual post ho j is to occupy, irrespective of his political leaning, j In any event, however, the selection of an American cardinal as pope, because he is pos-j sessed of eminent qualifications for the spiritual J leadership of the hierarchy and secondarily is not interested in the European political situation, would be warmly received, in this country. Itj would be the first time that an American cardinal had received this honor. j

LETTERS An Italian gentleman wrote me a very beautiful letter. I have been carrying it around in my pocket for days. I have read and reread it He 6aid he hesitated to write me because he didn't use very good language that he had worked with his hands fur so long his mental education had been neglected. But this is what I thought as I read the letter that his hearteducation had been enriched every day of his life. And he has passed some of that richness on to me. He came to America when but a boy of 15 all alone, and not knowing a word of English. Yet his letter was beautifully worded and penned with great neatness. What impressed me among so many things, however, was his sincerity and thoughtfulness. That reader's letter, anf hundreds of others which I have received, are food to my soul. I prize them above everything I possess. How a letter is able to thrill one! A love letter would the recipient part with it for any price? The letter your Mother writes you isn't it saturated with that which nothing on earth could supplant? And the letter of encouragement how much it means. If your day hasn't gone very well, write a letter of helpfulness to some one you love. You will sleep happy. In many of the books I prize I have pasted the letters written me by those who wrote the books, and the volumes take on new beauty and value. I often read the little pack of letters my Mother wrote to me when I was fighting for a place in the world. They lighten up my heart. I have a small volume of Lincoln's letters that I read very often. I keep it on the little stand text to my typewriter. No one ever wrote a more beautiful letter than did Lincoln to Mrs. Bixby who had given her five sons to the cause of her country. I want to give you the last sentence of that letter: "I pray that our heavenly Father may ftssuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom." It isn't how you word your letters it's how you feel them!

A beaker of the booze he took; his vitals it began to cook, and clouds of bluish smoke arose, emerging from his ears and nose. He cried, "I've had my forty drops! Now watch me whip the village cops! I feel like Sampson when he slew a lion or a kangaroo!" And when the snn rose bright and red. two cops were sitting on his head. And others beat him on the soles with heavy lignum vitae poles. After two days of public luncheons and dinners at which this boisterous laugh had attracted almost as much attention as the comic speeches themselves, the veterans decided to spring a practical joke on the unsophisticated Chepsou. Thy passed the word that Chepson was to be called on suddenly for a speech, and at his first attempt to be funny the plotters were to laugh in a concerted roar that would break up the meeting. (By Associated Press) BERLIN, Jan. 25 The search of Prof. Irving Fisher of Yale university for "moonshine" gold came to an abrupt end today, when he was informed

i by an unidentified scientist that the

German who had claimed the discovery of a synthetic gold process was a fraud and had a prison record. Dr. Fisher will leave tomorrow for

home. He came to- Berlin primarily to study the German currency problem. His investigation into synthetic gold was incidental In a typewritten statement to the newspaper correspondents he said today that the purported inventor offered to demonstrate his process for making synthetic gold, but that for some unexplained reason Prof. Fisher did not accept it. Submits Samples cf Gold.. The alleged inventor submitted samples of gold to President Havenstein of the Reichsbank. which he alleged he had made. This gold was found to be 99 per cent pure, but Herr

I Havenstein was without proof that the ' gold had been made artificially. This

occurred in 1917, but why President I Havenstein did not investigate furj ther Prof. Fisher does not explain in

i his statement. After recounting his

investigations. Prof. Fisher says: "But a distinguished German scientist has just told me that the man (the supposed inventor of synthetic gold) is a fraud and has a prison record. My friend, who gave me the original information, said he had known the man for vears and assured m thnt

ith' the ! tne ne tflmS he was sure of was that

tne man was not a fraud, however mistaken he might be about his supposed invention. I am now disposed to believe that he was misled." Scientists Interested Prof. Fisher said the German government had not taken much stock in the man's synthetic gold story, and

that those mostly interested were Individual' scientists. Prof Fisher stated that he had ascertained here that during the war the German government had made serious attempts to produce gold by new methods and had succeeded in extracting gold from sea water, but not on a paying basi3. "I understand the attempts were abandoned," Prof. Fisher added, "and

I have no evidence that the German

government is making any further at
