UKRAINE, RUSS SUGAR
BOWL AND FLOUR BIN, DANGEROUSLY EMPTY
(ny Associated Press) KIEV, Ukrania. Jan. 24. The
Ukraine has been long known as Itus- ' sfa's sugar bowl and flour bin. but the sugar bowl haa been empty for three or four years and now the flour and eornmeal are so low that it is doubtful whether the Ukrainians will have enough bread to carry themselves through to another harvest. The hungry folks from the Volga famine district have invaded the Ukraine by hundreds of thousands. Moscow and Patrograd have drawn on ita bread supply ot the limit of their power.
The Ukrainians are, however, a fight-j ing. Independent lot, who have stub-,
bornly resisted requisition and defeated plans to divert their foodstuffs in large 7tiantities to other parts of Russia. These requisitions and general dissatisfaction with conditions have played a large part in limiting the Ukrainian food supply. Besides, the snows were so late In coming last fall that much of the grain seed was frozen In the ground before the snows came to give it protection. Consequently the Ukraine faces the possibility of a small grain yield next year. Even an extraordinary spring sowing can not compensate for the.unfavorable condition of the crops planted last fall. The attitude of the Ukraine toward Moscow Is of far greater importance than that of all the other so-called "federated" republics because of its great wealth and common boundaries with Poland and Rumania. Moscow apparently regards the Ukrainian republic as a federated part of the government having its headquarters in Moscow. ITut Ukrainia, probably under pressure of the intense Ukraine nationalistic t-entiment. holds that it is quite independent of Moscow and aspires to support diplomatic negotiations with European powers to obtain recognition p.s an independent nation.

MURRAY VAUDEVILLE Without the splendid performance
of the "Three Aces of Harmony," Taylor, Macy and Hawks, at the Murray theatre Monday afternoon, the bill
would have been several degrees be low zero. This trio of men not only win recall from the audience while in their act, but also find renewed favor when they again appeared in the last act to aid in "piecing" out a bill minus one act. Perhaps the most notable member of the company is the young lyric tenor. If the" four Camerons could have ended when their bit was done there is no doubt about their making a much better impression. They also were compelled to add in a little hokum to fill out the lack of the needed fourth act. They present a comic performance unique and entertaining. The Eugene Brothers offer an acrobatical feature. While skillful, they have little to present that has not been
viewed here in other like acts. Van and Vernon, "A Peach and a Stew," comedy act, was the absent member, but they are now here to entertain. "Partners of the Tide" is the film attraction. MARVIN.

Congregation Changes Mind About Ball Playing LAPORTE, Ind., Jan. 24. About 12 years ago Rev. W. G. Titus, of Mishawaka, lnd., was pastor of a Christian church at St. Johns, New Brunswick.
Titus had a penchant those days for playing baseball; in fact, he was a star player. The congregation objected to the ball playing, and as a result his resignation was forthcoming. Titus then came to Indiana and accepted the pastorale of the First Christian church at Mishawaka. Yesterday the Indiana clergyman received a call to the pastorate at St. Johns, which ho vacated because he could not see any harm in ball playing. It is likely he will accept the call.
