HIGH A ORCHESTRA CONCERT REFLECTS STEADY REHEARSALS
Flaying the fourth of their winter concerts the high school "A" orchestra tra gave an excellent performance o a program of difficult numbers in. the high school auditorium Saturday evening. Their renditions of the heavier, classical numbers was interspersed with lighter compositions and all given with a technical finish, the result of a constant rehearsal. The orchestra is doing a number of unusual things this year besides making wonderful progress in playing ability, being a regular full credit claus with regularly prepared lessons. At regular intervals contests are held when the members compete for the more important positions in the orchestra. All members are required to improve their playing by taking private lessons and by doing a specified home study to which the parents testify !n writing. Add Instruments. With money donated by the student council from funds earned by the orchestra several new instruments havo been added to the number already owned by the school. Inclusive of a pil't of 19S the orchestra has added ?450 worth of instruments to their collection this year, bringing the total to about 40. At present it is earning the money with which to pay its ex penses to Nashville, T,enn., next March to play before the national music supervisors' conference. The GenneU record played Saturday evening at the c oncert is being sold to help the "On to Nashville" movement, the making of the record having been gratis by the Gennett record company. Miss Bernice Richards, a member of tho orchestra who has shown unusual promise as a violinist, and who U a pupil of Prof. Frederick K. Hicks, was tho soloist for the evening. Her brilliantly played number 'LArgonnaise" by Alrad, received the one oncore accorded by the audience during the evening. r The Theatres RICHMOND. That the role of the Saharan chieftan in "The Sheik." a picturizaticn by George Melford for Paramount of the now famous novel of the same name which is the literary sensation of tho current, season, is the bett of his screen career, is the opinion of Rudolph Valentino who, with Agn-js Ayres, Paramount star, is the featured player in the production. It will bT shown at the Richmond theatre Ir.r several days. "I know of no more colorful role than that of the Sheik in this tremendous picture production," he said, during the filming of the photoplay in Paramounts California studio. "Tha scenes are as wonderful as they are stupendous and romantic.' Miss Ayres was enchanted with her role the haughty English girl tamid by a masterful son of the desert, and by love. And now those who have seen the picture say those quoted are right lor 'The Sheik" is a remarkable production MURRETTE. Edward Sloman, who directed "The Ten Dollar Raise." J. L. why J. L. Frothingham decided to sign him to a long-term contract to direct his coming productions. Sloman directed a number of Stevart Edward "White's stories for Metro and he turned out a batch of Jacti London stories for the same organization that are still going strong, although they are more than a year old. PALACE One of the most thrilling scenes in "Kazan," the famous James Oliver Curwood story which will be screened at the Palace tonight, is the race lor life of a man and woman with a do--; team over the snows of a Canadian woodland, and their subsequent battle with a pack of wolves. Kazan, a wolfdog, heads the pack, and when he recognizes the woman who has befriended him he turns on his companion and scatters them. In this fight all the pack dogs are killed, to gether with several of the attacking wolves. Jane Novak, star of the prrduction, is the woman and Ben Deeley, in the male lead, is the man. During this skirmish Deeley was slightly hurt and a resumption of production was delayed for a day while he recuperated. Bertram ' Bracken directed this production, which is declared to be one of tho most gripping picturizations of any of the Curwood stories. Otheis in "the cast are William Ryno, Ben Haggerty, and Edwin Wallock. A big wolf-dog was used for the part of Kazan. MURRAY While "vacationing" up aid down the coast, Harold G. Herbert Duffy ' plays the part of "Silk" Mulane, the crook, who is Irish, and full of cleverness. Duffy handles this part with all the polish of an Indifferent subject of Investigation. Even. when trapped at the door of the investigator's safe, he shows remarkable coolness in the scene which follows. Nell Redd takes the part of Bertha Carrolla (Called Boots), who has been brought into the household of tie crooks and who ha3 come to love "Silk." Miss Redd doesn't have the opportunity for outstanding expression in this play as in the past productions, but she pleases with her cleverness in handling her part, Johnny Daly, played by Frank Morris, and Nellie Daly, taken by Lucile Ilusting, are the other members of the crook parly. The two take their parts well, but one would hardly think that they were man and wife. Daly assists "Silk" on his promenades. Andrew Streng and Arthur Olmis play the roles of Frank Powers and Snap Graham respectively. This pair work together and are continually on the heels of "Silk" for their own interests.
