BEVERIDGE SOUNDS BACK-TO-PROSPERITY SLOGAN AT ANDERSON (By Associated Press) ANDERSON, - Ind., Jan. 17. "Back lo rrorperlty" was the slogan soundrd by Albert J. Beveridge of Indianapolis, former United States senator, In an address here last night at a meeting held under the auspices of the Kiwanis club and the Chamber of Commerce. Three causes for bad business, he said, were high railroad rates, lack of agricultural credit, and the present federal system of taxation, all of which he declared could be removed by legislation. ' Reduction of freight rates, Mr. Beveridge continued, hinged on reduced wages for all workers whose pay, he ji.t?erted, was still on "a war basis." Congress, he added, should repeal the Adarason law. and the interstate commerce commission and the railroad labor beard should be consolidated so as to end diverse control that he said was exercised by the government. A non-cumulative sales tax in place of the present federal system of taxation was advocated by Mr. Beveridge, and a successful plan for extending agricultural credits, he added, minht be obtained from the experience of foreign countries. THREE ARE ARRESTED FOR SLAYING DEER IN INDIANA, REPORT IN DIANA FOLI 9, Ind., Jan. 11. Game wardens of Iho state conservative department In December last made 193 arrests which resulted In 179 convictions for violations of the fish and ame laws, George N". Mannfeld, a conservation department official, says. Three defendants were acquitted and sixteen cases remain to be tried. Total fines and costs assessed against the ITS convicted persons aggregated $i.237.0. Mr. Mannfeld points out that In December, 1029, the total arrests numbered 125, convictions 123 and fines and costs amounted to $2,7SS.10. The December, 1921, record shows an Increase of 73 arrests, 66 convictions and $1,449.50 in fines and costs. In an itemized list compiled by the 'fish and game division it is noted that twenty-one persons were arrested in December, 1921, for hunting on Sunday, sixteen for hunting with ferrets, four- , teen for digging fur-bearing animals out of holes, twelve for possession of illegal size fish nets, ten for hunting on lands without permission of landowners or tenants, and six for possession of ferrets without a permit. One hundred and eight persons were arrested for hunting without licenses. A surprising feature of the month's work, Mr. Mannfeld says, is that three persons were arrested for killing deer when it was generally believed that deers were extinct in this state. These animals, conservation officials believe, escaped from parka or reservations and probably were pets. They were killed in Montgomery county. Piles Cured In 6 to 14 Days. NEED BETTER HOMES FOR POSTERITY, SAYS BUILDING ENGINEER (By Associated Press) - CHICAGO. 111.. Jan. 17. When we build fewer pasteboard houses and more permanent buildings, when we will pay less for fires and more for fire-resistive materials, then the Amer ican homes can be expected to endure long enougn to nave a lew memories and traditions, and our home builders may be credited with thrift in the building of homes for their children and their children's children, Wharton Clay, construction engineer of this city today told the Associated Metal Lath Manufacturers annual convention here. "In order to accomplish the end," said Mr. Clay, "thrift must be practiced even in the design of the house. Thrift must be considered in selecting a location sure of advance in land values, close to transportation and HE DARKENED HIS GRAY HAIR Tells How He Did It. Mr. J. A. McCrea, a well-known resident of California, who was called Daddy and Grandpa on account of his white hair, and who darkened it with a home-made mixture, recently made the following statement: "Anyone can prepare a simple mixture at home that will darken gray hair, and make it soft and glossy. To a half-pint of water add 1 ounce of bay rum, a small box of Barbo Compound and i ounce of glycerine. These ingredients can be bought at any drug store at very little cost.
