Recruiting for Preachers A number of denominational colleges with departments of theology are preparing to make an active recruiting campaign "next summer to in
duce young men to enter tHe ministry. Some of them have sent announcements of their plans to
the secular press.
Many reasons have been assigned for the dearth of candidates for the ministry. Probably
the, greatest deterrent has been the small salar
ies which congregations hold out as inducements.
The denominations will not fill their theolog
ical seminaries with students so long as the congregations do not pay salaries big enough to enable their pastors to provide their families with
the comforts of life with other folk enjoy.
In this respect a commendable improvement has taken place recently, but nevertheless the
ministry as a profession is still underpaid. Laymen should not argue that a minister or priest works only one day in seven and consequently his pay need not be as high as that of one who toils six full days. The average minister and priest of Richmond works seven clays in the week, planning congregational activity, preparing his sermons, co-operating in civic movements, and seeking to improve the lives of the men, women and children with whom he comes into contact. . All denominations are beginning to see that their ministers must be better paid if they hope to attract to the profession wideawake and aggressive young men. The ministry, . judged
merely from the economic standpoint, must be able to meet the competition of "the other professions and callings for the services of alert and enterprising young men if it hopes to attract its share of candidates If congregations are unwilling to pay adequately for the services of ministers, they need not expect proficient and capable leaders. The future of the church depends, just as much on an appreciation of this factor as it does on any other one that may be mentioned.
Basketball Victories" f An Indianapolis newspaper wonders why the high school teams of its city, selected from hundreds of boys, are being defeated by teams from smaller cities and towns, whose players in some instances constitute the whole male population of the school. ' It seeks the solution in many quarters, not overlooking the temptations in a big city which induce players to break their training rules and to indulge in frivolities and distractions that impair their physical condition. ( ' In small towns and cities, the players usually are boys who have chores to do about their homes or on the farms of their parents. Their idle time is so limited that often they find it difficult to find the time to practice. The absence of amusements and distractions in their communities results in their. being in bed early in the evening. The regularity of hours, in addition to the conditioning process of outdoor work, puts them in a splendid condition for the rigors of basketball. This is a sport which taxes physical endurance. It calls for stamina and vigor. The boy who believes he can play masterly basketball and at the same time keep late hours and gorge himself with food, is deceiving himself and contributing to the defeats of his team. The high school teams of the cities, will not
be able to defeat the boys from the small towns !
and dural districts if their players do not obey the rules of right living.

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can." "Take It.'
'Up"
THE NOBILITY OF YOUR WILL There is a vast chasm between one's mind and will. We let out our minds for hire. They are often put on rations and told to do the thing that brings the most profit. Our minds may become slaves but not, -our wills. The will is the only grand free agent we possess. It stands like a watch dog before the door of our personality? It is a master supreme. To it must the mind pay daily homage and respect. Our minds are receptive. They invite. They entertain. But it is the will which decides and runs the house in which the mind must live. Like an open porch, receiving the dust from all corners of the compass, bo is the mind open and liable to the receipt of ideas and thoughts of every color. But it i3 the will which says which shall stay and which shall gos, We are not responsible for the thoughts which come to us but we are responsible for the thoughts which we keep. No human faculty is so apt as the will.- Put it to work and it presently begins to accumulate power and power of such a nature that all the varying experiences of life, in time, bow to its ennobling and inspiring leadership. Carlyle gave as his belief that the greatest equipment in life was the ability to take trouble. And who knows better how to take trouble than the one whose will has been trained in the school of self-restraint and privation? The physiologist is authority for the statement that the will even "alters the brain by creating new places for the mind to work in!" What nobler master than the will? And how kingly is that man who is made a real man by a finely fashioned will! It is within your province to find yourself and take complete possession of yourself through your will.
