RURAL CHURCH JOINS ONE-ROOM SCHOOL IN OBLIVION IN OHIO

(By Associated Pres COLUMBUS, O.. Dec. 24 The clap

boarded, weather-scarred rural church is joining the one-room school. In oblivion in Ohio. Before there were automobiles and smooth roads. It wasn't easy to get to the adjoining town on a Sunday, so, one went to church right at homer But now, it's a simple matter to pile Into the car, and drive to the "big church." The state church survey, made by the Ohio Federation of Churches, reveals the passing of many open-country churches. Recent comment by the Federation attributes this situation to changing economic and social conditions in the country, the chief of which have been the development of the automobile, and better roads. The federation recommends that town churches extend their influence into rural territory where necessary. The first 50 counties surveyed had 637 abandoned churches, mostly in the open country and distributed among the denominations practically in proportion to their respective strengths. Abandoned Methodist Episcopal churches numbered 137, United Brethren, 71; Baptist. 52; Disciples, 36; Presbyterian, 32; Lutheran, 26 and smaller numbers are reported for other denominations. Consider Problem The Ohio Federation of Churches has devoted much attention to the problems created by the abandoned church. It has emphasized that with automobiles and good roads, making the town east of access to rural residents, the town has become the social center for a wide area, whose people -formerly grouped themselves into jf small neighborhoods frequently about the rural church. As a result of this, explains the federation, the country church has declined in influence, and in many cases, has been abandoned. At the same time, it is declared, the town churches have in many cases, not fully met the need thus created, and large groups of rural people have been left without any adequate church facilities.
