honor which the University bestows
on its students, in being elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, national honorary scholarship society. Only 10 students among the entire class of more than 350 who will graduate from the college of arts and sciences next June were elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the regular election this week. Next May another election will be held from among students of the class, but not more than ten per cent may be chosen, including the fall and spring elections, and these must be students with highest scholarship. Membership in the organization means that Miss Bourne must have made a grade of A in practically every subject she has taken during her entire college course. Phi Beta Kappa was founded at William and Mary College in 17T6 for "the promotion of scholarship and friendship among students and graduates of American colleges." and the society now numbers in its membership the foremost men and women in the field of arts and sciences in America. The Indiana chapter of the organization was established in 1911. Practically all of the larger Institutions of learning in the United States have chapters at the present time. Guest of Honor. Miss Bourne was a guest of honor at the semi-annual banquet of the society
held on the campus Monday night and participated in the initiation ceremonies. She w ill receive the Phi Beta Kappa key within a few days and will be in the leading section of the senior procession and occupy a place of honor at the graduation exercises of the University next June. Following the banquet for Miss Bourne and the other honor students. Professor II. L. Smith, president of the Indiana chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and Dean of the School of Education at Indiana University, delivered an address on the subject, "Impending Educational Readjustments." Pointing to statistics during the world war which proved that twenty per cent of the men examined for the selective draft could not both write a letter to Iheir home folks and read one in reply and to the discovery that our nation was one of only sixth grade ability, Dean Smith advocated the new theory "that Ignorance be removed whether in the child or in the adult." He urged diversification of subjects in schools of higher learning to include all lines of educational development, artistic, scientific, industrial, focial and moral, and urged upon Miss Bourne and the other members of Phi Beta Kappa a spirit of leadership and Initiative in the cause of higher education.
