In contrast to the "poor white trath." Dr. Hulgln's lecture explained 'hat the mountaineers include some of the best, blood in the country, drawn rrom the Celts, Welsh. Scotch Highlanders. Cavaliers, Gauls, especially Waldensians, and the Huguenots, win were driven out of France by religious persecution. These varied peoples had settled in ihe south at the same time the Pilgrims were gaining a foothold on th:northern coast. With strong religious principles, they had refused to sanction slavery or the ctvillzat'on which accompanied it, and withdrew to the mountains, where they gained a precarious living from the Z' cent :m acre land. High Development. Showing the traits of their anctvters, Dr. Bulgin stated that in this people, the descendants of best of foreign ancestry, is to be found a high development of the valuable human

Many modern writers also have lound their grfatest inspiration in the mountains of the south, taid Dr. Buluiu Harold Bell Wright, gets much, of his material there, the story of the "Shepherd of the Hills" being drawn troni life, the "Shepherd" being an Ep!-C'pal minister of Chicago, who

ous and able to make their own fun was a strong point emphasized by Dr. Bulgin. w ho convulsed the audience with tales of some of the pranks played by h i m -e It and his companions during their bo hood days. The recitation of a trick pbned by h'tnself on a ram of his father's taunting the ram to chase him. and then dodging on the bank of a pool so that the lam would tall into th" stream, the unsuccessful attempt of his father to try the same trick. with the disastrous consequences; and the explanation ot the meaning of the phra-e, "hog killin' 'irne." were especially amusing to the audience.
