Christmas Savings Fund The estimate of Richmond bankers that more than $200,100 will be distributed among- persons who took advantage of the Christmas saving; plan is interesting in comparison with the fact

larly set aside, accumulate into large sums is j abundantly illustrated by the Christmas savings 1 plan. It should teach the small saver that he may save a considerable sum of money annually if he lays aside a portion of his earnings every week. All students of finance agree that it is the systematic and regular saver who accumulates funds. Persons who wait until they can save in

$10 and $100 sums usually never make the first payment. The man and woman who are willing to start with 50 cents or $1 weekly, and have the persistence to maintain the plan under all cir-

! cumstances, are the ones who win out.

It doesn't matter whether a person takes advantage of the Christmas savings plan, or some other system. The important point is to begin

United States in the next few weeks. It is hard to realize that Richmond savers, by putting aside small sums weekly for a period of a year, have accumulated $200,000, which will be used to buy Christmas gifts or to start their savings accounts; but the word of the bankers, as well as the experience of the past years during which the plan has been in operation, is abundant proof of the assertion. A large percentage of the $200,000 fund is

The release of $200,000 in Richmond to persons who have saved in very small sums under the Christmas savings plan in the last yea" should convince every one that systematic anl regular savings, deposited weekly, soon swell into substantial sums of money. The year 1921 will soon be over, but 1922 opens an opportunity for persons who do not save to begin laying aside a sum of money regu-

used for the holiday season.

themselves of the system of saving regularly during the year usually do it with the purpose of having cash on hand to purchase gifts for their families and friends. It gives them the money which they might not have, and also prevents them from going into debt. Many families lay aside these small sums for

that very purpose, and when their check arrives

There was a time years ago when it was more difficult for the man of ordinary means to do this, but today banks and financial institutions encourage the small saver and gladly advise him to take care of his savings. The time to begin is now. The widespread interest in Christmas savings all over the country and the amount of money

they have the money to make the purchases, thus 1 that is saved by the plan are shown in the aprelieving themselves of the worry in not having 1 pended table:

the cash available for their gifts of love and kindness. J Financial leaders have estimated that one, million persons in the United States have been j taught the advantages of systematic saving by. means of this plan, and have started their first j savings account with money accumulated in thi manner. A BANKRUPT He was walking down the street. The morning of lifj would never come to him again. His body was bent. His clothes were old and ill kept. A sign was on his back. It read: "Bankrupt Sale, etc." And I wondered if he realized that he was carrying the sign of his oun sad failure. .Maybe he did. But 1 at least admired his willingness to do SOMETHING while pity, as well as sympathy, crept into my heart. J wondered about the years that had gone before. 1 had a curious desire to get him aside thai I might learn the whole, true tale. And then my mind ran to the other end to the store that was to sell ifs stock and ihe man, or men. back of this commercial failure. And then I thought of the many failures happening all the time everywhere. Why is it that some men fail and others cannot fail? I asked this of myself. What a thing of tragedy is a bankrupt business, or a bankrupt man. But deeper in darkness is a bankrupt mind! A.nd that is where, I believe, all bankruptcy starts. We win largely because we say in our hearts that we will not fail. We keep our irfinds stored and prepared against the unexpected. I believe the first thing a boy should be taught is to lay up something for the future something to give him strength and will when the unforeseen comes. There is nothing in this world that breaks down the grand structure of one's will as using up all the resources at one's command with the coming and passing of each day. But there are extremes in saving as well as in wasting. There are many who become rich in money, but who face their end pitiful bankrupts in soul. He succeeds best who helps others to succeed. And there can he no bankruptcy here!
