FOSTER AMERICANISM IN SCHOOLS, INTEREST CITIZENS, NEXT WEEK America education week will bo held in local schools iurin the week of Dec. 4 to 1ft. under the auspices o? the American I.rion and the National Education association in co-operation with educational, religious, fraternal anr' civic organization?. The American Isricn through i s Americanism commission asked and received the co-operation of the Nat ional Education association in teaching and fostering Americanism in all thf schools of America. The main purposes of the week are to inform the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure co-operation and support of the public in meeting these needs and to teach and foster goou Americanism. No service has suffered more from unintelligent criticism than the school. It is said the averase citizen drs not read educational literature or accounts of teachers' meetings or visit schools to learn what they are doing. He has a conception of schooi only as he knew it in his own school days. American education week is expected to give the taxpayers who furnish the funds for the public schools first hand knewledge of trie service for which they pav. Urged to Observe Week. All communities are urgol to observe American education week Dec. 4 to !'". The program for the week

may he under the general supervision of the superintendent of schools, the commander of the local American legion post, the mayor, or ether chief governmental officer of thp community. These officials may call to their aid s-uch other advisors and help as thev deem necessary. The superintendent of schools, the -ehool principal, or the teachers in each community is expected to take the initiative in organizing and in making and euro ins out the program for tlv3 week by geltinu in touch with the head of tho American Lesion and of the local government and with th presidents of the chamber of commerce, v omen's clubs, churches. Rotary, Kiwanis and other civic organization., and raaking pi ins to reach at least once, every indh idual in the community. Put'l? may make posters, four-minute speeches, write slogans, a i.H court houses. btiMness hou.-cs. park,:. and public librairies to learn first hand more about, what the government does lor its citizens. It is suggested that patriotic rau-ic be suns and played, nd the meaning of the American flag tau?ht and the flag honored. lf alo is suggested that members of thi American Leeion and others be invited to speak at meetings held in the schools and in the community. The following topics are suggested for use in schools: Monday. Our Flag; Tuesday. American Ideals; Wednesday, The Language of America, Thursday, Immigration; Friday, Naturalization.

WASHINGTON, D. C, Nov. 28 Allying idea of Bernard Shaw's latest

statistical study of persons who lived for a hundred years or more is to be one of the undertakings this year of the census bureau which is preparing a report on the age3 of persons now living in the United States. It may be hazarded that this will be one cf the most popular reports ever put out by the bureau, for men have alvvas shown an almost morbid in-

play "Back to Methuselah" which pic-1 tures tho humnn race of men far pastj the century mark, who have attained!

to great serenity and wisdom and freedom from passion, but still retaiu their health. That, is what Metchnikoff believed men will become. In an acute study

seem none-thelless to be eager to add a t'ev years to iheir lives if posible. Every jot of evidence that average life is being prolonged is read with eager interest. There is manifestly something un

sound in this attitude. The average'

human life has been lengthened since the Middle Ages, but largely by reducing infant mortality and prolonging the period of senile decay. What we actually get out of life is not measured by the averace number of years men iic, but by the length of ihe active period and still more by what they do with it. More encouraging than the lengthening of the average expectation of human life is the fact, reported by tho census bureau, that persons of middle age and past show a constantly increasing range of activity. More and more achievements is put down every year to the credit of men and womtn who are old in years, but apparently not in vitality. More and

ive tract is always poisoning his whole body, he pointed out, because it is not suited to digest thp food of civilization. But it is perfectly possible for both the food and the digestive tract to be adjusted so that this poisoning may be overcome. Metchnikoff devoted most of his life to this problem, and these researches are still being carried on by his associates in the Pasteur Institute. Improving the Human Machine Meantime, science has discovered

more and more ways in which it may perfect the human body as a working machine. It has been found that the ductless glands, which were formerly not understood at all, control almost all phases of human development, and it looks as though a perfect understanding of them alone would make possible the almost indefinite prolongation of human life, barring accident. In fact. Dr. H. P. Kriedenbcrg

It is quite possible that, if international warfare with the help of poison gas does not destroy the race and its civilization, our descenderts of a few centuries hence may look back upon this as an age as benighted as the Stone Age seems to us.
