IWU-NSIhU, Ht-mAN MASON CITY, Iowa. Nov. 23. Han ford MacNider, the recently elected national commander of the American Legion, is known by his comrades r.s a smiling, dynamic, he-man, possessing enormous energy a man thai

works hard and plays hard. Mason City knows him only as "the only child" of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H.Marnider. MacNider was born In Mason City 32 years as;o. He begun his education in the Mason City public schools, continued his education at Milton Military academy, at Milton, Mass.. and finished at Harvard In 1911. Th?n for five years he worked as a teller in his father's bank here. McNider went to the Mexican border in 1916 as a first lieutenant !n the Iowa National Guard. When the war came, he resigned his eommis

Mon in the national guard In order

to attend the first officers training camp at Fort Snelling in May, 1917. He was given a provisional second lieutenancy in the regular army and assigned to the Ninth Infantry, which with the Twenty-third, made up the regular army brlgde of the Second division. Serves As Instructor.

Soon after arriving in France in Sep

tember, 1917, Mr. MacNider was sent to the army candidates school at Lanrres as an instructor. The pervice at Iangres was boresome. His old division was at. the battle front, winning honor after honor. In May, 191S, MacNider was transferred back

to the Indiana Heads division

and conducted a state-wide service and compensation drive. MacNider stands five feet 11 inches tall, weighs 165 pounds and is fond of all out-of-door athletics. Mason City residents say his only gweetheart is his mother. One-half hour after he was elected national commander at Kansas City he was telling her all about it over the long distance telephone.

abandon everything old in order to live up fully to the new freedom. Gorky and Chekoff have not been driven from the theatre by the flood of propaganda plays which have been offered. The failure of the new regime to produce any especially notable novels, poems, operas or plays is attributed by the Bolshevist leaders to sabotage on the part of workers in various artistic lines.

World's Gunnery Record Lowered By Navy Crew LOS ANGELES, Cal.. Nov. 25. A world's record in gunnery was established by the gun crew of turret No. 4 of the U. S. S. Condactorettes Decrease On Baltimore Car Lines BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 25 The

: conductorette is a rapidly vanishing

quantity in Baltimore, and, like the bison of the Western plains, will exist only in the fables told to their grandchildren by old men who lived here during the world war. In 1918 there were 157 women and girls working on the lines of street railway. In 1920 the number was greatly decreased and

His record from then on can be re-'today but 16 of these conductorettes

Demian is a robust, typical Russian

of 40, who has great physical strength

their poetry there. But foreigners who don't understand Russian make up a

majority of the audiences. Chercheinivitch and Yesenyin are probably the best-known of this group. There is

also a group of proletarian poets head-1

ed by Alexandrettsky. But on the whole rhymeless, ryhthniless poetry hasn't been a great success and the average man insists upon

having jingles. He may be a Commun-1 ist or a Bolshevist in politics but in literature he clings to old writers and in art to old painters. I Vereschagin and Repin still hold

their own in the art galleries in spite of struggling artists who have tried

and personality and is not compelled to convince the public that it must

are to be found on the widely scatter

ed lines of the city. Romance was directly responsible for some of them deserting the cars. Love affairs sprang up between conductorettes and. motormen, with marriage as the result.
