Recognizing the High School Orchestras

The program committee of the National Conference of Music Supervisors, which is to be held in Nashville, Tenn,, in March, has asked tho Richmond High school orchestra to give a concert before its members. The invitation is a distinct honor for the high school organization, as it comes from an association which has members in all parts of tho United States. Members of the orchestra are anxious to accept the imitation, but the cost of the trip is one of the deterrents. It is believed that $1,000 will defray the expenses of the 54 players. The orchestra is abb

to raise one-half of this amount, and the school!

authorities believe that the community should

cation. We still think of the modern school as it was in our younger days, and consequently most of us are out of touch with it. To make us realize our ignorance and to supplant our erroneous notions with a correct viewpoint, American Education Week will be observed from Dec. 4 to 10.

Some of the things the parent will see are set!

out by educators to be the following: "They will be given demonstrations of what a modern school does ; how the teaching of writing, reading and arithmetic have been revolutionized; how health and physical development of the pupils are cared for; how the coming citizens are given knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, and how they are trained in the exercise of these rights and in the discharge of their duties through the organization of the school, through classroom exercises, and through children's clubs." Many problems are before educators. The school system has been attacked from many quarters. On the other hand, many parents who have criticized and who are dissatisfied with tha showing of the schools, have never visited one

and probably would change their opinion after a

I visit. The visiting week will give them a splen

before a national musical association will justify the expense of sending the young players to that city. Few cities of the size of Richmond can boast of an organization that compares with it in general excellence. There is no question about the advertising value of the organization to Richmond. The high school players have kept Richmond before readers of music journals for many years. Tt is one of the distinctive features of Richmond that place it in a class of its own. If it goes to Nashville it will give a good account of itself and add another chapter to the history which it is making for the city in that respect.

Education Week, Dec. 4 to 10 Schools of today are different from what they were were when most of us were boys and girls. Few of us, however, have noted the change, or know how the modem child is receiving its edu-

Some of them show less interest in their chil

dren's education than they do in their club or church activities. The whole process of educating the child is transferred to the school system. . Educators know that the real background for the successful rearing of a child must be the home in which father and mother take the task seriously and co-operate intelligently with the teacher. This co-operation cannot exist until the

duties of parenthood. If many fathers and!

mothers will visit the schools between Dec. 4 and 10, the purpose of the educators in setting aside this period for that purpose will have served a great purpose that will manifest itself in the improvement of the whole work of training the child.

CIRCLES The circle is a most fascinating figure. Setts no end and is a symbol of eternity.

Emerson takes this subject for one of his most interesting and fuil-of-thought esays. Arthur Brisbane noted in one of his articles recently that we are just beginning to test ideas which the old Chinese thinkers tried out several thousand years ago, and failed in. The truth is emphasized more and more that we live in a civilization which is but the faint impress of what dozens of civilizations were long, long ago. So that History itself is merely a circular record. Every day, every year, we come back to points the world has passed before. Perhaps our experiences at such times are much more intensified, but the fact remains that we keep doing over and over again the problems which others have worked out in the past. The main and important task is to bring to each experience a little new- light that may make life's progressive, circular path wider and more beautiful thru added service. We go back to "the old home town." While there may have been a few improvements or changes, still the physical base remains about the ram? as when we first became acquainted with it. Facts keep telling us that we are rather filling out an existence than adding much to it. Hut in this filling process if we make ourselves able to perform creditably everything that comes before us. we have fulfilled every desire that the Creator of our souls had in mind for us. Of this I am sure. Do not look upon each day as "the same old grind" but as a new chance, born and sprung from the heart of Opportunity, and yours to make the very most of you alone placing the only limits upon it. Keep coming back to something better!

Both sides of the knife are apparently shown, but in turning it over, the fingers give the knife a half twist. : so the same side is shown twice. Charley is a mild-mannered, inoffensive darky, the janitor of an office building, quiet, efficient. One morning, Charley reported for duty with a large piece of court plaster decorating the immediate vicinity of his right eye. There was no vanity attendant on its application. The size and shape of the adornment proved, beyond a doubt, that it was there for a more practical reason. "Been in a fight, Charley?" some one inquired. "No, sah." r "Where'd you get the gin?" This in a confidential whisper. "Ain't had no gin, sah." "How come, then?" Charley grinned. His marital troubles were no secret. "Man wife kinda raised a liT rumpus. Tha's all, sah." "Thought you said you hadn't been fighting." "No, sah, da't right. I jes' looked back."

"You are not an angel and you never will be," said Evangelist Brown, at the First Christian in one of bis several sermons.
