MATTER, IS EXPLODED PALLADIUM XKWS BIIW.41' WASHINGTON, Nov. 18. Republican leaders have for many yeara advanced the theory that the race question was almost entirely responsible for Democratic control of the states south of the Mason and Dixon line. After the political experiment atempt-

ed in the Virginia elections of last j week those in Washington who ar-1

high in the councils of the G. O. P. are about willing to concede that the theory in question is a fallacy. When the gubernatorial campaign in Virginia was launched some few months ago the white Republicans decidd to divorce themselves from the colored element of the party. It was decided by the white faction of the party to make a direct appeal on business Issues during the campaign, acting on the belief that Virginia was at heart Republican on those issues and that such an appeal, properly couched, would -win. At the outset of the campaign the white Republicans of Virginia held a convention composed exclusively of

white people, thus advertising their reparation from the colored element of the party, and thy nominated a ticket composed entirely of white men. Throughout the campaign the Repub-j 11 can "lily whites," as they were nown, studiously avoided the discussion of political policies. Business policies were stressed and the electorate was promised a genuine business administration of state affairs in the event of a white Republican victory. Hold Colored Convention. Immediately following the nomination of a white Republican ticket the i tilored Republicans of Virginia held a convention and organized what was referred to as a "lily black" Republican party, placing a ticket in the field. Thus the political divorce between the -white and colored Republicans became absolute. Those Demo cratlc voters who were said to favor ihe Republican party but refused to support it because of race prejudice at last had their opportunity to desert, the Democratic camp. The ticket which the white Republicans offered was a good one, headed by a candidate for governor who is a man of recognized attainments. The result? A record Democratic majority. The colored Republicans supported their own ticket or did not vote, while Ihose Democrats supposed to be waiting an inducement and opportunity to hange sides voted the Democratic ticket, as usual. It Is generally conceded that President Harding's speech at Birmingham had nothing to do with the result of the elections in Virginia, coming as it did in the thick of the Old Dominion campaign and pitch'jrt in the key of frendship for the colored citizens. Those who were in close touch with the Virginia campaign almost unanimously agree that that state would have gone Democratic if the president had never left Washington, or opened his mouth on the subject of political equality for colored citizens.
