Christmas Seals
The sale of seals in the weeks preceding Christmas to obtain funds in the fight that is being waged against tuberculosis is reaching greater proportions annually, probably owing to a keener appreciation of the dangers that lurk in the malady. While the foes of this malady are trying to acquaint men and women with its dangers and the best methods of fighting it, it is cheering to learn that their efforts are not in vain. An Associated Press dispatch from New York early this week said the death rate from tuberculosis had been reduced from 192 per 100,000 in 1905 to 114 per 100,000 in 1920, thu equivalent of saving more than 80,000 lives in this country during the last year. This is tangible evidence that the work of the National Tuberculosis association and of other bodies specializing in the eradication of the disease are accomplishing real things. And, after all, that is what counts. Persons buying Christmas seals cannot find
better proof of the effectiveness of the antituberculosis campaign than the reduction in the death rate from that malady. But the death rate from tuberculosis is still too high, not only nationally but also locally. Tuberculosis is an insidious foe. Many inactive cases may escape attention temporarily, only to manifest themselves later in malignant form. It is estimated that there are 3,000 active cases in Indiana, with accommodations for only 5,000 in various hospitals and sanitariums. No one need deceive himself into believing that the fight has been won. It has just started, any many years probably will elapse before tuberculosis has been put under such medical control that it ceases to be a menace to the health and to the economic welfare of the community. The purchase of seals, which have a practical value at Christmas, in addition to the financial aid which they give in the fight, should be encouraged in our community. They can be purchased in a few weeks in quantities which will enable almost every one to buy them. Tuberculosis will be downed when the whole American commonwealth is aroused to the menace that lurks in this disease and when it learns to understand that the lives of all of us are jeopardized by every infected person. As soon as the public learns this fact, it will take the comprehensive steps necessary for the eradication of tuberculosis. In the meantime, let the interested citizens keep up the fight which they have begun, knowing that finally the foes of tuberculosis will be so large in numbers that the disease will be gotten under control.

our lives and built much of themselves there. With them, we walk right thru our problems sound in heart and unafraid. Such an inspiration, to me and to countless others, was "Daddv" Ward. ' He helped found a school out in Kansas nearly half a century ago. They called him Professor, and Doctor but to those of us who sat under his instruction, he was just plain "Daddy" Ward. He was lovable in every way. But his hands were rough from manual toil. When he wasn't teaching, he was working on hfs small farm near the College. When football was unpopular with many he was for it. He believed that it taught courage and helped to make men TAhen the writer went to this College, his first night was spent at the home of -Daddy" Ward. And there he was comforted and understood when he got his first case of home-sickness. A student didn't have to take up time explaining to "Daddy" Ward He understood right off. In his astronomy class he made everyone feel that God was a real person, good and great. He was always reverent, but he had a highly developed sense of humor, and was so gentle that you knew he was si rong. The writer of this simple tribute was very poor in mathematics But "Daddy" Ward saw him thru! As he did everyone. And I believe everyone who ever sat. under his words would rather have his love and respect than to have written all the text books that have ever been written on mathematics. "Dady" Ward is now past ninety years of age. And I am sure that e fs going to live forever!

FARM LAD RAISES SKUNKS FOR PELTS ' COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 16 If more boys in Summit county were of the mind of Vernon Schovie, who lives on a farm near West Richfield and who is in hl3 second year of pig club work there would be skunk clubs as well as pig and calf and poultry clubs run for farm boys. C. F. Tom, club leader of Summit county, ha3 been to Vernon's farm and has seen the small pack of domesticated "polecats" which the lad is raising for their pelts. It began when he trapped a female, put splints on her
uroKen leg, ana kept her in a box-coop in the barn. She has seven little ones all of which, successfully raised, have now multiplied to 15. Vernon has rigged up box-coops with wire runs for the animals. He feeds them butchers' offal. They give no trouble, he declares, and the price of the pelts makes it well worth while tc raise them.

To Find a Total of Set-let
Figures A number is written on a slip of paper which is folded and given to soire one to hold. Various persons then set down numbers between one and ten on another sheet of paper. Any one's initials are written on ttus sneet for identification. The figures are added up and found to equal the unknown number written on the folded slip. Suppose the number the performer p. rote on the slip was 36. He watches the figures that the spectators are writing and when their total reaches 27 or more (which is within 9 of 36, he takes the slip and asks for some one's initials. As he writes the initials on the paper he secretly adds the missing number at the bottom of the column, and thus brings the total to 36. Copyright. 1921. by Public Ledger Companj
