her life she received a telegram. A telegram was a social event at the village that lay near the farm and unheard of on the farm Itself. To Mrs. Talbot it meant disaster. The yellow envelope meant nothin? less than the death of Jane, or a severe accident. No one but Jane would Fend a wire! Young Amy cut short the anticipatory shiverings of her mother by ripping open the envelope and announcing calmly: "Jane's coming home tonight and wants father to meet her on the evening train." "She must be sick." Mrs. Talbot decided, still unable to free her mind

from the feeling that a telegram must mean misfortune. I

"How awfully old fashioned you are, mother." Amy exclaimed, still looking at the message. And this, by stirring again a little resentment, drove away all feeling of forboding. That afternoon she remarked sentimentally, while she and her daugh

ter were fixing the bed in Jane's old tair ton

"How nice to have all my ducklings around me again you and Jane and Luther, just as you used to be." "I don't think it will be much like it used to be." Amy answered practically, slipping a fresh cover over a Plump pillow. "We're grown up, mother. You don't seem to realize that." "Ye?, it will be different." Her old face shadowed. "Luther has a wife now. He pays more atention to her than he ever did to his mother." "Naturally," Amy put in. "And Jane went off to college. Your father said 'twas wicked, and I think maybe it isn't quite right myself." "Mother! To have an education:" "Well, not that -but for a woman to he a doctor. You have to know all about people's insides." Amy gisgled. "Do you think that's wicked? After all, we have insides, and if they go wrong, someone has to know how to et them right again." Amy Talbot could only acquiese before her child's logic. "Yes, but some of them well, it don't seem ladylike." Amy did not even giggle at this. The fierce envy of her sister's chances suddenly took away her lighter mood. "Ladylike:" she scoffed. "It isn't 'adylike to scrub windows or weed wardens either. I wish you knew how

much 1 wanted to study anything, A peoples insides even, just so 1 could i have a chance away from this poky j hole." j To this, almost daily complaint' frs-. Talbot had a firm answer. She: never thought about the complaint.! or the intense longing behind it. The:

inevitable set of words popped out of her head just as they had yesterday and every day for years before. "You get those ideas from the movies." "I don't:" The protest was too hot. to be overlooked. A perfectly new excuse came into the older woman's head. "You get it from Claire, then." To tliis Amy answered nothing. I'laire had upset her. more than she dreamed. And she did not dare let her mother know it, so she kept, silent. She could not deny it, that would have been an untruth. Nevertheless, when this outburst was over, Mrs. Talbot relapsed into

USEFUL HAIR TONICS

Very few people bother to apply a

ic properly. It seems like a

very small thing to consider and one cot worth troubling about, vet like most small things it is really very 'inportant. Most people apply a hair tonic by upsetting small portions of the tonic over the head, rubhincr it arminrl

through the hair and then consider; the job COmnlete Tlli-i msthml nnfnr 1

tunately gets more tonic over the hair than into the scalp, and the result is

that the hair becomes sticky or oily 1 The woman is apt to conclude that! the hair tonic is no good because It makes her hair look so messy and makes her shampoo it at least twice as 1

often as she needs to. The only way to use a hair tonic is to part the hair, rub a little tonic-

down the parting. then part again iu another place, rub some tonic down! that parting, and so cn until you haej covered the scalp with decent thoroughness. A great many women find it most convenient to wet a tiny wad of cotton with the tonic and to rub! this down the partings of the hair.! This is certainly most convenient if I

you have not one of the regulation hair tonic bottles. You never need use much tonic at one time, the important thing is to get

it on the scalp. When you have done I this run the fingers through the h:iirj and begin the massage, which is anj important part f the scalp treatment.!
