The Armament Conference One of the most momentous conferences in the history of the world assembled in Washington today. Mankind feels that its future weal and woe depend on the outcome of that gathering to which the great powers of the world have sent their representatives. "It is not a convention of remorse, nor a session of sorrows," declared President Harding, who is responsible for the conference. '"It is not the conference of victors to define terms of settlement. Nor is it a council of nations seeking to remake humankind. It is rather a coming together, from all parts of the earth, to apply the better attributes of mankind to minimize the faults in our international relationship." It is in this spirit, voiced in the opening address of President Harding, that the conference will try to solve two important problems, which, by international consent, are deemed to be fundamental in achieving harmonious effort among nations, and in emphasizing, as the president put it, the guarantees of peace and the realization of "a better order which will tranquilize the world." These two phases are the limitations of armaments and the settlement of questions in the Far East and the Pacific. The conference will

Wichita now has a "Walk Straight" club, dedicated to the purpose of teaching people to walk with their toe: pointed straight ahead, instead of out at the sides in the manner of Charlie Chaplin. This should be comparatively easy under prohibition. One paper says a prominent suffragist "was born and grew to manhood in New Jersey." The redoutable "Yankee Doodle Boy" has decided finaly to quit Broadway and live in England. We will try to struggle along. determine which of the two it will take up first, or whether in their very nature the two questions are so involved that neither can be decided without considering the other. The American government, its official spokesmen have declared, seeks no material gain as a result of the conference. President Harding today again stressed that point when he said: "Our hundred millions frankly want less of armament and none of war. Wholly free from guile, sura in our minds that we harbor no unworthy designs, we accredit the world with the same good intent. So I welcome you, not alone in good will and high purpose, but with high faith." A quick decision on neither of these questions can be expected. All governments will refer the limitation of armaments to their experts, who will be forced to find some common standard or measure whereby the reduction of armaments of each nation can be settled. This every7 one will admit will not be easy to find, and weeks may elapse before the conference has found and accepted this standard. The problem of the Far East is generally regarded as one of pure statesmanship. A common sense view must prevail in the conference, if the ardent hopes of the peoples of the world are to be realized. Visionary expedients or theoretical pronouncements of idealists who believe the world can be shorn of guns and soldiers over night will avail nothing. And the

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can", "Take It", "Up" ALONZO STAGQ When character stands so high that It illumines everything about it, then you have a picture of greatness. And it doesn't matter whether the man of such a character is a merchant prince, a noted lawyer or a statesman. Whatever he is engaged in as a life work, it, too, is great. Chicago University may well be proud of Alonzo Stagg, its athletic director and genius. Many years ago. when Eckersall, the brilliant quarter-back for the Lniversity of Chicago, finished his college course, he paid this tribute to Mr. Stagg: "Stagg teaches character, as well as football'" The other day, Stagg took his football team to Princeton, New Jersey, to engage in friendly tilt that school's famous team of players Just bofore the game he stated that, tho he was not confident, he was hopeful. Well, the result was that for the first time in the history of the game, a great college from the West returned victorious over an Eastern team. And it was the genius of Stagg that did it. There isn't a cleaner, finer type of man in all sport than Alonzo Stagg. Which means that he is one of the worth-while men of America. Many a man has gone out from Chicago University a finer and stronger character because of the strong influence of Stagg. He has supplemented the training of the mind by as valuable a training which he has given to the bodies of the men under his instruction. Clean sport owes a great debt to Alonzo Stagg. I fear that it will never be able adequately to pay that debt. I have never met Mr. Stagg. but he has been an inspiration to mfor twenty years, and I am sure that he has inspired thousands of others who also have never known him personally. It. is well to write this about a man while he lives. America is a better Nation with Stagg a citizen of it and the world is a better place to live in because he is here.

"Your narrative i most interest ing, said Sherlock Holmes. "I havt, i already heard of your meeting with Mrs. Baarclay, and your mutual recognition. You then, I understand, followed her home and saw through the window an altercation between her husband and her. in which sha doubtless cast his conduct to you in his teeth. Your own feelings overcame you, and you r?n across the lawn and broke in upon them "I did, sir, and at the sight of me he looked as I have never seen a man look before, and over he went with his head on the fender. But he was dead before he fell. I read death on his face as plain as I can read that text over the fire. The bare sight of me was like a bullet through his guilty heart." "And then?" "Then Nancy fainted, and I caught up the key of the door from her hand, intending to unlock it and get help. But as I was doing it, it seemed to me better to leave it alone and get away, for the thing might lock black against me, and anyway my secret would be out if I were taken. In my haste I thrust the key into my pocket. ; and dropped my stick while I was . chasing Teddy, who had run up the curtain. When I got him into his box from which he had slipped, I was off as fast as I could run." i "Who's Teddy?" asked Holmes. i The man leaned over and pulled up ; the front of a kind of hutch in the corner. In an instant out there : slipped a beautiful reddish-brown i creature, thin and lithe, with the legs of a stoat, a long, thin nose, and s-; pair of the finest red eyes that ever j I saw in an animal's head. j "It's a mongoose," I cried. "Well, some call them that, and I some call them ichneumon," said the man. "Snake-catcher is what I call them, and Teddy is amazing quick on cobras. I have one here without the fangs, and Teddy catches it every night to please the folks in the canteen." I "Any other point, sir?" "Well, we may have to apply to you again if Mrs. Barclay should prove to be in serious trouble." "In that case, of course, I would come forward." "But if not, there is no object in raking up this scandal against a dead man, foully as he has acted. Yoa SYMPTOMS WOMEN DREAD Mrs. Wilson's Letter Should Be Read by All Women Clearfield, Pa.
