ENGLAND'S GLOOMY FINANCIAL POSITION REPORTEDTO HOUSE (By Associated Press) LONDOS. Nov. 10 A gloomy viev or the financial position of the L'nited Kingdom was presented in the house
of commons yesterday by Sir Robert Home, chancellor of the exchequer, in moving the second reading of the appropriation bill. He expressed the belief, however, that Great Britain's traditional tenacity and resourceful nes would carry her through the hard times. The arrangement to begin payment of the interest on the war debt owed to the United States at the rate of 50,(K0,000 annually, he said, would occasion fresh expenditures next year and would compel the house to "cut its coat according to its cloth." The budget estimated a surplus of 86,000.000 from ordinary revenue, and 93,000,000 from extraordinary" revenue. Of this total, 80.000,000 was allocated to the sinking fund, leaving an estimate surplus of 97,000.00, which, however, had disappeared, owing to the recent coal strike . L . - ; 1 . - n .V.-

The Composers
Selections 9, 10, 11 and 12 were written by an American, two Germans and a Russian. Foster, the American, Is generally acknowledged to have produced folk song3 the equal of any in the world. Liszt and Rubinstein, a German and a Russian, were great pianists, composers and teachers. Mendelssohn, also a German, was the versatile, cultured gentleman of wealth, in one particular at least being thus different from practically all the great composers.
Types of Compositions j Our four include two vocal and two instrumental pieces. The folk song is a gift from America which has been warmly received by every civilized country in the world. The chorus, with its graceful, tender melody, appeals to young and old and is an especial favorite with high school students. The Melody in F, although originally instrumental, has in a sim
plified arrangement become widely used by children as a song of spring. The Liebestraum is one of the best vehicles for the displaying of the piano in its tonal beauty. The Rhythms In these four compositions there are four different rhythms. Old Blacn Joe is a decided quadruple, or strong-
