Marines and the Mails Postmaster Hays says the mails are to be delivered without molestation by bandits even if it requires an armed escort. More than 1,000 marines will be ordered to main distribution points and will accompany the mail trains. He is using the only method that will effectively break up the robbing of mail trains. Force to the limit will prove to the bandits that mails in transit must not be tampered with. The marines will be replaced by a permanent armed guard, organized as a branch of the postal service. "The mails may be late, but they are not going to be lost," said Mr. Hays. "The mails are going to be protected down to the last postal card, regardless of the cost of the service."

The Illinois robbery a few days ago shows

that mail bandits come prepared for all emergencies. This band carried everything from sawed-off shotguns to dynamite and bombs. A

show of force, such as this one was, can be counteracted only by preparedness on the part of the postal department. Mail robbers must be "treated rough." The marines arc admirably trained for this kind of work. If the postal department recruits its guards from former marines and other service men, it will obtain a set of men who will be a match for any band of robbers-

Observing Armistice Day The whole country will pause in its accustomed pursuits Friday to observe the ending of the most fearful war in history. This year Armistice day will be doubly significantfor not only will it commemorate the rlpfpnt of tVm r.prm.ini nn land, on water, and in

the air, but it will also be followed by a momen-stat. and at present his country's

tous conference in Washington whose sole purpose is the limitation of armaments and the removal of causes of war. If the victory in 1918 was made possible by the support given to the allied government by American troops, the notable conference in Washington also is the result of American initiative and enterprise. What the Versailles treaty failed to do, President Harding is seeking to accomplish through a conference of the leading powers which he has invited to discuss specific principles that eventually, it is hoped, will lead to a better understanding among nations. The sacrifice of the American soldiers, from

the court of St

James, has come to Washington as a delegate to plead for China's welfare. Dr. Koo is one of the few delegates to the Washington parley who saw service at the Versailles g a t h ering and is one of the younger members cf the conference, havine been born in 1888. He knows America well, having

When the nation pays tribute with solemn ceremony, and in the presence of the greatest soldiers of the age, to the unknown American fighter in the National cemetery at Arlington tomorrow, many will recall the beautiful sentiment spoken by Abraham Lincoln and voice the hope he expressed at Gettysburg in November, 1863: "That from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of their devotion that we here highly resolve that these dead shall

Dr. Koo began his public career by being secretary to the president of China, Yuan Shih-kai, and was councillor of the Chinese foreign office, 1913-15. He was appointed minister to Mexico, lj.ter to the United States and was then transferred to the London post. He has served on many commissions in China, and among the younger Chinese there is none more imbued with the ambition to place China in

McKane, director of the tuberculosis division of the state board of health, will cover Wayne county on his tour of the state, in the course of an educational campaign, according to word received by Miss S. TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can", "Take It", "Up" WHATEVER YOU HAVE Quite often greatness rises from the very midst of us, out of the M-rt ordinary circumstances and so unexpectedly. The fact is that Success and Happiness are largely a matter of utilizing the by-products of simple enough gifts. It is rare that the extraordinary mind rises to any high eminence. That is because of itself. Rather does such a mind gather to itself every factor of assistance and then in unity forge its way up. On every hand, it seems, there is a bewailing of opportunity and talent and ability. But It's whatever you have that you develop and work with, day in and out, that will make you largely what you hope to become. To go back and explain what is meant by the by-products, I would say that they are the chances and abilities most people throw away as useless. He who cultivates love for knowledge by constant reading and observation is laying up a mine of information that some day will serve him well. You may have no musical bent, or you may have no desire to excel at science or art. But there are desires in your heart that may, under determined effort, be made to blossom and bear abundant fruit if you will cultivate, aright with whatever you have. I read a wonderful story that Sam Jones once told. A man came to him very much discouraged and wanted Mr'. Jones to tell him what to do. "I have an errand for you first. Do it and then come back and I will tell you what will set you right." The errand was to go to a very poor family and find out what they wanted most and to supply the want. The gentleman went and bought food and clothing and fuel. And he was so showered with thanks and gratitude that his spirit was completely changed. He returned to Jones and told him that he had found what was th matter with him and no longer needed any help. There ere jobs everywhere there is work for all there is hidden wealth all about you, if you will set yourself to getting it with whatever you have.

Stories

He was obviously of the chosen race and he boarded a street car with a sackful of something which he planked down on the conductor's platform. He took a two-penny ticket, and at

j the termination of his journey he was informed of the fact. "Oh, Mr. Conductor," he pleaded, ! "let me go a leedle farther. I am lonly a poor man!" j The good-natured conductor consented, and at the end of the next j stage he was met with the same rej quest. Again he consented, but when, I for a third time, the passenger pleaded, he jibbed. "Here," he said, "I've had enoguh I of this! Off you go, you and your

luggage!" The sack was thrown off and an ear-splitting yell rent the air. "Oy, oy! My partner!" wailed the unsuccessful pleader.

I pin my faith to wise old boys who make the good things come to pass, who don't believe in empty noise, in booming drums or sounding brass. They straighten things that are'amiss, while agitators paw and buck, and watching them has taught me this it never helps to run amuck.
