Brazil to Celebrate Centennial "The Brazil appropriation by congress of $1,000,000 for American participation in the Brazilian centennial celebration at Rio DeJaneiro .next year should assist materially in furthering the friendly relations which already exist between the two countries," says the Indianapolis Star. "Brazil in many respects is the most stable of the South American countries, rising above the petty quarrels which have retarded the prosperity of some neighboring nations. It has escaped -the long series of internal revolutions which characterized the history of many Latin
American republics and for the most part it has held aloof from the intrigues of sister states. In : order to emphasize the solidarity of Erazil with 'the United States its president asked for a revocation of the original proclamation of neutrality in the war between the United States and Ger;.many and the country later joined us in the war. "The continued operation of the orderly processes of government has tended to keep Brazil from figuring prominently in the world's .news, but commercially the country occupies a

foremost place in its relationship to the United States, particularly in respect to importations of coffee, rubber and vegetable oils. Brazil produces approximately two-thirds of the world's supply of coffee and sends about 1,000,000,000 pounds annually to this country. In the first part of 1917 two-thirds of Brazil's rubber output was shipped to the United States, more than 5,000,000 pounds representing one month's exports. Cotton seed and castor oils, beans, cocoa and tobacco have increased materially the total volume of business transacted annually with the United States. The adverse exchange situation has affected Brazil in. common with other South American countries, although an early improvement in trade conditions is expected. "The celebration next year will commemorate
the establishment of Brazil's independence from Portugal. NFrom the discovery of the country in 1500 up to about 1650 it had been the scene of numerous skirmishes involving the P6rtuguese, Spanish, British, French and Dutch, but in the latter part of the seventeenth century the Portuguese managed to get undisputed sway. Sympathetic efforts to establish a republic, following the success of the American colonists, failed in 1789, but in 1822 Brazil declared its independence of the mother country. Unlike most LatinAmerican countries, Brazil did not set up a republic, but established a constitutional monarchy. Dom Pedro was proclaimed constitutional emperor on Sept. 7 of that year and the monarchial form of government continued down to Nov. 15, 1889, when a bloodless revolution effected the change to a republic."

GOLDS, AND BROWNS, AND PURPLES I have just taken a ride In the out-of-doors thru a section of October. As I rode and wondered and marveled at such gorgeous colorings, the thought came to me what definition would I give to October if someone should ask me? And this is what I would have said: God! For miles I looked into a thousand variations until the call of the Night came nearer and shadows drew dense and denser. Streaks of glittering gold, and edges of silver outlining feathery clouds, spread like a screen in the background of the golds and browns and purples of the dying leaves. I thought of Millet, of Innes. of Blakelock, of Legros, of Whistler T-and I thought that with all their genius for catching such scenes, no artist could be great enough long enough to get but a faint feeling from such a passing beauty. I have seen sunsets upon the plains, I have seen them play behind towering mountains in the Rockies, I , have seen them right after storms, and across fields of snow when billions of diamonds seemed out to dance but somehow there never can be a sunset like unto an October sunset behind trees that have just started to drop their litter of leaves in golds and browns and purples. When ripe apples, reddened by some god, lie like gems upon the ground; when chestnuts crack and fall, when woodbine blushes out its heart and softened winds come out to romp with timid frosts, when grapes hang tight with sweetened juice, then it's October's time! How rare a month, how full of every month that has gone before. What days in which to weigh the thoughts and deeds of a lifetime. Let us ever take October for retrospect, for meditation and for prayer. "O. suns and skies and f!ower3 of June, Count all your boasts together. Love loveth best of all the year October's bright blue weather."

Hair that loses its color and lustre, !or when it fades, turns gray, dull and ! lifeless, is caused by a lack of sulphur in the hair. Our grandmother made up a mixture of Sage Tea and Sulphur to keep her locks dark and beautiful, and thousands of women and men who I vnlnp that even rnlcir that heautiful dark shade of hair which is so attractive, use only this old-time recipe. Nowadays we get this famous mixture improved by the addition of other ingredients by asking at any drug store for a bottle of "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound," which darkens the hair so naturally, so evenly, that no one can possibly tell It has oeen applied. You just dampen a sponge or soft brush with it and draw this through your hair, taking one small strand at a time. By morning the gray hair disappears; but what j delights the ladies with Wyeth's Sage : and Sulphur Compound is that, be-' sides beautifully darkening the hair after a few applications, it also brings back the gloss and lustre and gives it an appearance of abundance. No. 7 Balance a Coin or Card To balance a coin, calling card or playtng card on the back of the fingers seems a difficult feat, but it becomes quite simple when one knows the secret. A pin is held by the head between the two middle fingers, with the point extending to the back. The haS4 is held low beneath tiie table, and as it is brought up into view the card or coin is brought over by the other hand and held in front of the pin. A pretense la made of balancing the article, but in reality it is leaned against the pin. In conclusion, the hand is lowered nearly to the table and as the coin is removed for inspection the fingers are spread and the pin drops unobserved to the floor.
