national forests. There are a million and a half acres of burned over land in the national forests that must be reseeded. Ten million dollars is asked for buy

They will cost more in the future and the timber upon them will be scarcer. National forests in the East should have been acquired long ago. This section of the bill should be of special interest to the public because of the great value and interest which the national forests in the West have developed as playgrounds. In the East

This role applies to everyone from the poorest peasant upward, the king and aH the male members of the royal family having at some period worn th3 yellow robe of a monk. This curious custom is, no doubt, an imitation of the so-called Act of Renunciation of Gautama, the future Buddha, who. at the age of 29, moved by the sufferings of humanity, renounced his rights, to his father's throne and. abandoning his wife and

child, devoted the remainder of his life to religion. Just as every American boy Is expected to go to school, as a matter of course, so every Siamese youth Is ex-

WASHINGTON, D. C, Nov. 1. A measure which is designed to put all of the forest lands in the United States, whether owned by the state, by the nation or by private individuals, in a condition of maximum productivity, is to be strongly urged upon the present Congres by the industries ift this country which are dependent upon forest products. Their first effort is to bring home to the American citizen the fact that, although he lives in one of the finest

to be cropped at intervals. American land owners as a whole, have not learned even the rudiments of silviculture. To cut timber in this country still means to wipe a valuable natural resource out of existence. The Snell bill is designed to remedy

all of these evils. It provides a Federal appropriation to bf nted in coon"--ating with the states in protecting and renewing their forests. The siait-s ate required to put up as much money in each instance as the Federal Govern-

timber land outside of, but contiguous

to a national forest, could exchange it

jfor so many board feet of timber on national forests.. This timber would of course be cut under directions of the Forest Service so as not to injure the stand. Meanwhile the Forest Service could reforest the denuded lands

acquired by this method. The Snell bill seems to be regarded

Mr. Harlan has appealed to other screen players who have spare hooks and magazines on hand to send

MURRAY "The Blazing Trail." starring Frank Mayo, which is being shown at the Murray theatre, approaches the ideal in photodramatic entertainment, it is the story of a brilliant young physician whose mind drifts over the border of annesia under the lash of over work. He goes to the Blue Ridse mountains to mingle with the illiterate mountaineers and to forget, for a time, hid identity, and the eternal quest for a specific for blood poisoning that has injured his mentality. How he summons his scientific knowledge to save the life of a girl rind how he fights the battle of his life for her honor, give the story a kickv punch that will delight those for whom life ha? not. losts its thrill. WASHINGTON STOCK "Kindling," the play being presented at thp Washington theatre this week by tbo Jack Bessey stock company, is one in which there are many dramatic possibilities, most of which seem to be used. It micht be called a "deep" play; its r.athos Is touching, and throughout it all there is a strong current of sentiment. Perhaps Lotta F.llis. as Bates, and Patti McKinley. as Maggie Schultz. find their respective positions in the piece more accurately than do the others. Yet, the splendid understanding of the role showed by Herbert Duffy, as Heinrich Schultz, is not to be passed by without comment. Happily one can find no serious breaches of the art in the acting of this week's cast. Arthjir Olmi is this week seen as a

The act came too late to enable the government to get large timber areas in the East, Hence the forests protect only a few varieties of trees, and not the most important By far the greater part of the national forests are timbered only with pine, spruce and fir soft woods of relatively low value. The oak, maple, walnut and other valuable hardwoods are scarcely protected by them at all.
